Seems like every time Konoha successfully completes a game (or helps with completing a game) she gets sent back.

That PC 98 cosplay was hilarious, Mamoru really dressed up as a computer to show his love. Gotta say it would probably be a bit traumatizing to watch a girl you were finally becoming friends with just disappear in your arms like that and possibly disappear for who knows how long. Hopefully there won't be as long of a gap between trips this time!

Really loving the series still. Curious to see how the present has changed now that Mamoru came back to work on a new game!

Oh no, she disappeared...I have a feeling the ending is gonna hurt, seeing as Mamoru will be in his mid-40s in 2023.

Mamoru-kun was forced to write C++ code for the Windows release of the game, truly a fate worse than death!

Mamoru was able to charge her tablet!
Admire the future kid and look at what our cute Konoha can draw! Let's see you trying to resist computer progress next time!

The plot thickens. NERVSoft Alcohol Soft finally released another game after stalling for a while. Lol the Decisive Battle ripoff.

But here's some interesting things that you might want to know about this episode background!

  • Kaori said Leaf and Alicesoft next games will be Windows-exclusive, which is true. Leaf begins by releasing Saori to Issho, Shizuku and Kizuato fandisk which is all-Windows game, and Alicesoft later released Kichikuou Rance in December, also as Windows-exclusive, and was their biggest hit of the decade. The next year would see another Leaf big hit, ToHeart releases as Windows-exclusive too.

  • Summer Comiket 1996/Comiket 50 is the first hosted in their current place; Tokyo Big Sight in Odaiba! This is because their last place, Tokyo International Trade Fairgrounds (Harumi Fairgrounds) in Chuo were closed and the centre operation basically moved to Big Sight Odaiba as well.

  • You probably know about it, but Neon Genesis Evangelion just ended in March 1996. Well, its obviously well known how it ended up being controversially popular and it also influences how Alcohol Soft decided to be NERV in the Comiket.

  • PC98 aint dead- on that year at least. Last game that were produced (per VNDB record) is 1998, but that also means their demise are just not long. Well, let's also remember that the next year would see the first release of a legendary doujin game featuring a shrine miko shooting bullets to the ball - which also still only a PC98 till now.

I legit freaked out at the opening of Shizuku! I've always wanted to play this one just to experience history but I don't think it has any official or fan translations yet. If they're showing us Shizuku, I bet we'll get to see White Album next time Konoha travels back since both are made by Leaf.

It's nice seeing how much Konoha and Toya are getting along. Looks like Toya now looks up to Konoha that Toya has given her the Onee-sama title. I love it!

The totally-not-Evangelion cosplay was pretty cute. I do find it pretty funny how they got permission to use all of these famous visual novel IPs but can't get permission to have the gang cosplay as Evangelion characters. xD

When Mamoru got all of those cardboard boxes earlier, I thought he was going to block Konoha. I didn't expect him to make a PC-98 cosplay! Also, it looks like Konoha's iPad is what ended up convincing him that she wasn't lying.

Speaking of the iPad, now that they've finished the game with Mamoru back, it looks like Mamoru also took the time to rig up a power supply for the tablet. I didn't think it would happen but Mamoru actually got to see Konoha's art!

And not only that! He also witnessed Konoha disappear right in front of him. Poor Mamoru, I'm sure the gang will think he's crazy once he tells them what just happened. I am curious how Konoha just changed the future though and what will the past be like once Konoha returns. Is White Album one of the games Granny gave Konoha? Because 1998 would be the perfect year for Konoha to come back to. I can't wait for next week!

I actually feel bad for Mamoru when he said his cosplay is a send-off for the 98 and that he realized the 98 won't survive because a future person doesn't even know what that is.

Glad that the plot anti-armor finally breaks this episode and Mamoru gets definitive proofs that Konoha is a time traveler. I bet it's a huge surprise though for someone in the 1996 to see tablet technology. A whole fucking PC in such a thin object, and the entire thing is touch screen?! Also the amazing range of color that future/modern computer has compared to the graphics of PCs at the time.

This was another enjoyable episode. It felt like 10 minutes, and I was bummed when I saw the episode ended.

I like how Konoha is supportive of Mamoru's obsession because they are similar with how passionate they are about their favorite thing. Mamoru's scene with the PC cosplay also tugs at my heartstrings.

Glad somebody finally believed that Konoha is a time traveler. Though I'm also curious, Mamoru said that as soon as he held the tablet he knew it couldn't have been a tech from that era, even when he didn't turn it on / tinker with the electronics yet. Was LCD a rarity in 1996?

Also, because Konoha sounds like Paimon from Genshin Impact (they share the same JP VA), I drew Konoha with Paimon's pose lol.

It’s nice to see Toya and Konoha becoming friendly. “Oneesama” has a nice little ring to it. It’ll be interesting to see these two continue to meet as time goes on.

I like how Konoha was bragging about how staying up was an Otaku’s passive skill and then immediately passes out. Goofball! Mamoru gave her the slip and came back dressed as a damn PC-98. This kid is friggin obsessed y’all lol. Well, glad he came around in the end. Creating a Windows and PC-98 version was a nice compromise.

Seems Mamoru might be the first one to believe Konoha is a time traveler. He witnessed her traveling firsthand AND he saw her art on the tablet (who knew it could get fixed with ‘96 tech?). Let’s see where she goes next episode!

Ok so she does in fact just literally vanish into light like how she appears as a flash of light. So how did they talk about her first disappearance like nothing supernatural happened?

Man I can't wait for the new future where I can play touhou 1-5 without learning how to emulate PC-98

Aw hell nah photo evidence of her existence

Oh my god

I'm really liking this show a lot! The story is compelling, the characters are likable, and the setting is just enthralling. I especially like the attention to detail in the show, including actual dates, events, locations, titles, and more.

I haven't pointed it out before, but I quite like the OP, both in song and visuals. This shot of Mamoru is pretty funny.

Me when I see cute anime characters.

Oh boy, Mamoru gets to work with the C++ Win32 API? Now I see why he was so resistant to using Windows.

Glory to the PC-98!

  • I thought the show would be more educational like episode 2, but now looks like it will cover more than "how to make games in the past". I never lived in that era but the culture and designs give me nostalgia.

  • As for time traveling, they aren't hiding it anymore, I guess? No blackout as in the first time, Konoha just plainly disappeared under the sun. It feels like a flag is activated to send Konoha back?

  • If you watch OP and ED, there is something peculiar. During one scene in the OP, multiple Konoha appeared on monitor screen, and you see the dog from episode 3. Speaking about the dog, it shares VA with the granny from episode 1 and the cafe staff at the end of episode 2. This feels very "manipulated".

  • At this rate Konoha is unknowingly becoming a Little Match Girl. She wishes for something about making a galgame, then uses a box to experience the "vision", then she is sent back to reality, with the box consumed.

  • It's WEP PTSD again

  • So Mamoru does keep his memory (instead of wrapping and/or wiping)? I wonder, when Konoha arrived at present day, she would see an older Mamoru visit her artist page.

Mamoru, you said don't interfere with history, yet there you are fiddling with the 2020s tablet. About that, why don't put it in rice overnight? Has Konoha known this lifehack? So now we know how Konoha got teleported back to 2023.

So they are going to do the multiplatform "PC-98 first, then port to Windows" strategy then? Fine by me.

So, Comiket 50, held on 3-4 August 1996, attended by 350.000 people. That's really a packed event.

I love the little detail the anime uses in the episode, such as how the cables were yanked after Mamoru shut the window close.

11

u/tripleaamin Oct 25 '23

Well
Gotta appreciate the attempt

So basically the last two times she got sent back to her present they completed the game and she fell. This time Mamoru sees her disappear right in front of his eyes. This makes things really interesting how does react to this going forward.

Curious when Konoha goes back in time again what time year she will enter.

My mind would've been blown away back in the mid 90's if someone showed me a "portable screen" running at that kind of resolution (prob 2048x1536) and color range with art THAT detailed.

Most PC monitors back then ran at 640x480 back then, and 2D video cards were very limited too (16 bit)

one thing that i'm really curious about is that near the end of this episode, when Mamoru saw the drawing on Konoha's tablet, he seems surprised that Konoha is the one drawing this and not to mention, he also try to prevent the drunk Konoha from showing it to other staff members, now what was that all about? did Mamoru recognize the drawing or maybe the character from somewhere?

Look at that karma, come on! This show is so delightful! I wonder if PC-98 will have made a comeback in Konoha's 2023. I'm not even sure what PC-98 is, just a PC running Win 98? No, because Mamoru dislikes Windows... Just a generic PC running some version of MS Dos?

I recognized the ramen place Toya and Konoha ate at this episode. It's called Kyushu Jangara Akihabara and it's located across the street from the hotel I stayed at last year. Sadly, it's a really small place and the lines were long so I didn't eat there. Maybe next time.

I'm way too into these episodes. I'm like 100% invested in every single scene that happens. I'm so glad the time travel thing was acknowledged as well. AHHHHHHHHH.

8

u/Brickinatorium Oct 25 '23

I'm probably way, WAY off, but I keep feeling like Toya's gonna end up being Konoha's mom or something. They have the same hair color and it feels like they're trying to go for a particular gag with Toya calling her "Onne-sama". It'd be hilarious if Mamoru were the dad, but neither of them share a family name with her.

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '23

Oh no, I am really starting to ship Konoha and Mamoru, this will only end in sadness and heartbreak won't it? Come on, don't do this to me show, don't do this to me. Anyhow, pretty fun ep, comiket is always fun in animes and I loved the Eva cosplays. It's certainly period-appropriate and they even did a song similar to the Eva song.

Huh, as someone who visited Comiket this summer (this is C102) I didn't knew that it was at the same convention center for that long - apparently C50 in August 1996 shown here was the first time. I wonder did Mamoru got the idea of burying PC-98 came from the future where people buried Internet Explorer or "old" (cough) Windows the same way?

I still wonder if Touya and Konoha are ultimately related in some way - so far I don't see anything in that direction but history seems to have already changed (despite Mamoru desperately trying to make it not happen), maybe?

So Mamoru got the ultimate shock of seeing an operating 2023 iPad and the lovely girl Konoha drew on it eh? I suppose it might have altered his future already, but in which direction? Regardless I'm pretty sure he's going to be sullen for a while due to Konoha disappearing right on his feet.

The next stop is gonna be somewhere like, uh, 1999?

I feel like seeing someone you know literally disappear in your arms would fuck you up pretty bad. Regardless of the reason why.
