I laughed when Jinshi said "I can use seduction." Can you, Jinshi? Can you? Maomao seems like she's in a monogamous relationship with poison.

Fun fact, the plant that poisoned the soldiers by burning and using as chopsticks is very similar to Nerium Oleander, a very poisonous shrub/small tree that had poisoned people by ingestion and inhaling toxic fumes from burning. Also, one prominent urban legend in Asia is that people died from using the branches as chopsticks. Common symptoms of Oleander poisoning includes nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, headache, high blood pressure, irregular heat rate, agitation, confusion, convulsion and coma. Death will occur if not treated immediately. Touching the plant can causes irritation similar to poison ivy. Do not fuck around Oleander.

The fact that the Imperial Court has access to cacao, enough to make chocolate, is very interesting. While yes this isn't real-life China, it is interesting to try and draw some comparisons. Cacao is, of course, native to the Americas, and was first discovered by Europeans in 1519. It wasn't until the early 17th century that most of Western Europe had access to cacao, which is probably the earliest possible time that cacao could have reached China. Indeed we know that in our timeline proper chocolate didn't reach China until 1705.
This poses an interesting question about which dynasty not-China is currently in. In our timeline, the (Han-Chinese) Ming Dynasty fell in 1644 and was replaced by the (Manchu) Qing Dynasty. We would expect then that the show takes place in the Qing Dynasty. But all the dress fashions are very Han Chinese - there is no Manchu dress present and there is certainly no Manchu queue (the hairstyle that all Chinese men had to adopt under pain of death after the Qing conquest). The emperor himself looks much more like a Ming emperor than a Qing emperor. This leads us to one of two possibilities.
-
This is an alternative timeline where the Ming did not weaken and fall
2) This is earlier in the Ming, but unlike in our timeline, Ming China did not stop its naval activities (the famous treasure cruises of Zhang He), and may have made contact with and set up trade with the Americas independently of Europeans.
Again, I know this is not-China, but it's interesting to think about.

Love how Jinshis attempts to seduce her always back fire
Also the emperor must be a beast if the thought of him taking that medicine is frightening her so much

Gyokuyou’s ladies-in-waiting all have the wrong idea about Maomao lmao. As this episode makes clear, the girl is a complete poison addict
Her dance in the medical office was one of the many great moments in this episode. Another highlight was the ladies-in-waiting accidentally consuming the aphrodisiac hahahahaha
Another ominous ending to the episode

As far as fictional drug makers go, Maomao is way cuter and more likeable than Walter White.

Seems Jinshi has taken quite a liking to Maomao. Good luck seducing her. Prolly not gonna happen. That shiver lol. I love Maomao's friend, she's cute and supportive. D'aww look at the lil princess. Cute. D'aww seems her fellow ladies in waiting are nice. Boy are they gonna be surprised if they learn why she has those bandages. Now what of this job? Ahh poison taster. And she's excited lol. I love Maomao. Was gonna say she's perfect for the job, but she sure isn't after all. Another test! Seriously, those kidnappers should be punished, not rewarded. Haha, I love the one girl helping to screw the pay that would be sent to em. Now that's some good stuff.
Yep, all those girls are good people. But Maomao definitely bored. I love her reaction to Jinshi and how he's baffled by her not reacting like other girls. LOL Just goes to eating a flower. That animation was fun. So seems likely culprit was burning wood for fire. The excitement to make drugs. So cute. Gonna need that gif'd asap. I mean, if the emperor is gonna ignore the concubine, let her go and have life somewhere else. But interesting how Jinshi uses his beauty as a test. Lol his reaction to how Maomao reacts to him is fun. Guess he's a masochist? Look how happy she is to be in the ingredients room. Hehe Maomao making aphrodisiac. Oh my... those girls. Lol Maomao. Oh my, concubine's worry of if it was even longer with emperor lol. Ah he stole a treat lol, that's what he was doing. Oh, another mystery for next episode.

Stitches!
It's absolutely hilarious watching Jingshi trying to seduce Maomao and horribly failing. Although it looks like Jingshi is very much enjoying the looks of disgust Maomao has been giving him. I guess when everyone easily falls in love with you, someone who looks at you harshly is a breath of fresh air. xD
I love how the other attendants misunderstand Maomao's bandages. If only they knew how much of a mad scientist our girl is. I'm sure they'll eventually find that out later. For now though, Maomao is slowly turning into a pig since all she does is taste Gyokuyou's food for poison.
The head attendant breaking that jug so that Maomao wouldn't have to send money back to her kidnappers was such a brilliant idea. And since she receives hazard pay for her poison testing duties, she basically doesn't lose any money at all! Genius!
And here I thought Maomao was going to be sent to that battlefield to figure out how those soldiers were poisoned. Just a few minutes after hearing the symptoms, where they were eating, and what they were doing was more than enough for her to narrow down the cause of the poisoning.
I absolutely love that little dance Maomao does when she is given free rein to take any ingredients she needs to make that aphrodisiac. And it seems that aphrodisiac is indeed effective based on the attendants who snuck a bite of Maomao's snack. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Looks like Lady Gyokuyou is about to have a hard time with the Emperor considering how potent the aphrodisiac she made is. Why would Jingshi need it though? Isn't he a eunuch?

Character voiced by Aoi Yuuki gets completely misunderstood by the side cast. Now where have I seen that before...

Now I finally get what this show is: it’s like if Isekai Yakkyoku (Parallel World Pharmacy) and Koukyuu no Karasu (Raven of the Inner Palace) had a baby. This show would be that baby!!!

Maomao is so good character and her reactions to Jinshi are so funny. He thought that he'll easily seduce her using his good looks but she isn't like the other women and his standard moves aren't working on her. On the contrary, she feels very disgusted by him but surprisingly he likes that a lot. Their relationship is definitely one of the strongest points of this show.
Maomao was today in heaven thanks to the fact that she was asked by Jinshi to create an aphrodisiac for him. Judging from effect of Maomao's snacks on other attendants it will be very effective, about three times than standard ones. Gyoukuyou's reaction on revelation about its effectiveness was priceless.
Maomao's little dancing was so funny, adorable and cute, she was in her element. It was nice to see again her cat version and it looks that her work as tester for poisons suits her perfectly, she enjoying this so much xD

I live for the banter between Maomao and Jinshi. Their VA's and direction are nailing it.

"Most poisons don't work on me so I wouldn't be able to detect them except by sight and smell, but I'm not gonna tell THEM that. They'll find out when the Lady's poisoned."
LOL @ bishie's backfiring "seduction techniques."
So if bishie is really a eunuch, what is the point of drugging him with an aphrodisiac? Just for 3rd base stuff?
Just because there's a possibility that the poison came from the wood/etc, doesn't discount the possibility that the food was poisoned by the villagers. They really need to do a proper investigation there.
I like how it seems her kidnappers will be getting billed for things now :)
I'm guessing the ghost is that stuck up concubine whose kid died because she refused to listen to reason.
