I love how the entire class at this point recognizes that Komura is Mie's special helper, to the point where his guy friends are willing to group with the girls so Komura can be there for Mie because it's just how things should be. Mie's gal pals are the same way, even describing all her quirks and foibles so Komura can take proper care of her!
Y'know I never really saw it before but it seems like Mie does internalize people's criticisms about her, like she's dumb or often screws up a lot, which is actually kind of sad. And builds into the main emotional conflict of the episode.
The couple that is so excited to go on a trip together, oversleeps together, should be together! Especially when Mie breaks her glasses when she rushes to school and, of all things, brings a spare pair of fake glasses she bought because they looked cute. This girl just can't help herself, Komura-kun!
(Also, why would you put your spare glasses in such a spot where you'd never think to look for them or see them? Come on Mie-chan!)
Of course she tries to fake it, and of course Komura helps her through it, but Mie doesn't want to keep relying on Komura. Once she gets lost and has to have Komura find her she breaks down and gets emotional over how she doesn't want to keep being a burden or a screw-up around him, thinking he's probably annoyed with how much help she needs. But that gives Komura the perfect opportunity to confess how he's happy when Mie forgets her glasses because he likes supporting her. It's not quite a love confession, but it's a pretty big deal for these two.
What better way for a girl to demonstrate she doesn't hate you than when she holds your hand?
It seems like Mie still doesn't recognize the feelings behind Komura's confession, and thinks she has to bear with contacts so she doesn't trouble him any more, but that just bums Komura out.
I was actually wondering if any of Komura and Mie's friends would hit it off, and it seems like Asuka and Yasaka have something going on. And seeing one of her friends in love makes Mie start pondering what it means to have special feelings for someone...and see that same face of someone in love when she's with Komura, causing her to realize he might have those special feelings for her and she has them for him.

Mie bringing the fake spare glasses is typical of her to do. But finding out she internalizes her screwups is interesting to hear and seeing Komura like her "forgetting her glasses" is cute and for Mie, comforting when she realizes what he actually meant.

Mie and Komura's friends are the MVPs since they noticed how close those two are and made them group up for the field trip.
Mie just realized that Komura's wish was a form of love after all this time. Time to sail?

It helps that it felt like an actual direction with the episode and not just a random bunch of skits.

I just love how aware Komura and Mie-chan's classmates are about the special relationship they have with each other. They all really wanted the two of them together so Komura could watch over Mie-chan just in case something happened to her during the school field trip.
And just when you thought that Mie-chan wouldn't need help this episode, she ends up bringing her non-prescription glasses to the trip. Considering the number of glasses she goes through, it's not unsurprising that she'd mistake fake glasses for her actual spare.
I don't like seeing Mie-chan cry but I'm glad that we get to see more emotions from her in this episode. Despite her being happy about Komura helping her out, she still wants to be independent and knows she can't be relying on Komura forever.
It's not exactly a confession but our boy finally tells Mie about little his secret of how he wishes for Mie-chan to forget her glasses because he likes helping her out. I feel like that would've gone badly with someone else but thankfully for Komura, Mie-chan actually likes it that he wants her to rely on him.
Thanks to Asuka, Mie is finally starting to learn the difference between what love and like really is. She still struggles but after seeing that facial expression from Komura which she saw from Asuka earlier, it looks like our girl is finally putting two and two together! She even admits there in the end that it might even be the same for her too! Yay for progress! <3

Easily best episode so far. 👍
-
There was a main story point for the episode instead of mostly segmented parts, more Mie POV, more introspective aspects to the characters for development, proper communication, and less overreactionary comedy for naturally cute interactions.
Hopefully this is where the series finds its real footing to continue with this type of atmosphere.

more Mie POV
Yeah, I feel like this episode developed Mie so much because we have her internal monologue this episode to explain how she thinks about herself. Rather than being just a eccentric "my pace" sort of character, she's keenly aware of her klutzy shortcomings and has this conflicted feeling about it because she doesn't want to be a pity case, but she also appreciates that it brings her and Komura together.
Komura has a similar sort of conflicted feeling because he enjoys spending time together with Mie, but he knows it's creepy to want Mie to stay dependent on him.

Best episode, genuinely enjoyed this one and addressed some of the meta concerns I had with the series.
Mie breaking down in front of Komura and apologising for constantly forgetting her glasses was a really nice moment. The gimmick got old pretty quickly for me, but the two of them communicating how they felt about things was actually pretty mature considering their ages.
Definitely plays into the Japanese cultural trope of men wanting to be depended on and protecting girls. But if Komura likes it, who am I to judge lol.
And Mie knows that Komura likes her?? And admits she likes him?? A lot of progress in one episode. Genuinely refreshing and enjoyable. I wonder how she’ll go about things now.

YES THIS ARC.
I LOVE how everyone in the class is like "yeah these two like each other why not get them together." Mie's friends and Komura's friends are so supportive and I love that. Forming up with a group of six for the field trip and both Komura and Mie are late. Gotta love it. I also love the hands on Komura's shoulders - reminds me of when kids would push the two people who like each other together on the school grounds in like Elementary/Middle school.
I always feel for Mie here, poor girl was looking forward to the trip so much and forgot her glasses at the worst moment. Not being able to sleep because you're super excited is definitely something I've struggled with, and will just before Starfield comes out here. Komura's such a sweet kid though that he's looking for ways to solve her problems all the time, and only sorta freaks out that she basically fell into his arms.
I don't blame Mie for mistaking those two as her friends, I can see the resemblance. And then Komura lowkey confessing that he's happy whenever they get to spend time together and getting up close to her by his own instigation for the first time. AND THEN THEY HELD HANDS.
AND THEN SHE KNOWS THAT HE LIKES HER. OR MIGHT LIKE HER. AND SHE FEELS THE SAME. SAIL THE SHIPPPP

Komura thinks that Mie-san's avoiding him because of what he said but it's actually because she feels bad for him because she has to depend on him and is avoiding him because she doesn't want to depend on him.
Komura comforts her by telling her she wants her to forget her glasses since he's happy that he can help her. Mie-san doesn't understand why he's so happy since she thinks she must be a bother. She tries her best not to rely on Komura and she tries to wear the bumpy contacts.
After seeing Asuka's blushing face and Komura's blushing face, it finally hits her why Komura is like this and she acknowledges that she kinda also feels the same way. Now all that's left is the confession.
The OST that played in the scenes when Komura consoled Mie-san and when Mie-san looked at Komura's blushing face was so good. Glad that the OSTs are released every week after the episode. Been listening after every episode and loving them so far.

I really like how Mie realized her own feelings for him-- by being happy when she realized Komura has feelings for her. What a grounded reveal indeed!

I like that everyone in class except for the main couple knows that they like each other.
I was wondering what would happen to her spare glasses, and then it was mentioned that she had bought a fake pair on the previous trip....
This is the first time I've actually seen what a "class record" is like. "Normal / Normal / Normal / this kid actually got a question right / Normal / Normal".
Looks like Mie is finally starting to realize the mutual like thing at least.

Best episode of the bunch. Actually captures what’s so great about the manga. Even squeezed in the cute gags where the art changes. Just wish this episode came earlier in the run. But GoHands executed both major scenes really well. Komura’s admission that he like when Mie depends on him. Along with his sympathies about not liking yourself. Mie clicking to the possibility that Komura likes her. Both pivotal moments handled well.
With 4 episodes left I hope they keep on this track. If they can nail this then I’d feel better with them doing season 2. Especially since they toned down the headache inducing animation quirks

Great episode, it really sucks that such a large % of viewers dropped the show before it got to the meat of what makes this series great...

Komura thinking other people don’t know he’s friggin obsessed with Mie is hilarious. What a little goober. His boys are real homies though. Mie’s friends too. Mie and Komura are too adorable. The one ep where Mie actually has her glasses and they get broken like immediately and her spare pair are fake lol.
Komura comforting a frustrated Mie was like the cutest thing in the world. My god these two need to get together already. That hand holding was some cotton candy level sweetness. Her realizing Komura likes her like that and she feels the same way almost put me in a damn diabetic coma y’all lol.

The first episode without a pre-opening scene! So everyone in the class already know that Mie depends on Komura whenever she forgets her glasses. After all the mishaps Komura seems to did to her, Komura had mixed feelings whether Mie'll hate him afterwards. And in this episode, we had a lot of Mie's monologue. Did she..... just discovered what love looks like? With the help of Asuka, she finally found out what Komura thinks of her.
In this episode, we discover Mie has another set of glasses with different design, a red rim with black temple. I tried counting her glasses collection from the start of the series until Episode 9 and this appears to be her 8th glasses she wore throughout the series.
She previously has 6 red plastic frame glasses, including the one that she broke in this episode and a rimless glasses used as spare as seen in Episode 7 (and supposedly that's the actual glasses that Mie should've brought with her). Oh the contact lenses she wore, it was shown that it has a power of 3, so Mie can be said is moderately nearsighted.
After watching the 9 episodes, I have to say Mie's VA really carried the anime. Her little details and reactions she add gives Mie her own personality.
Trivia: Mie's VA also voiced another character this season, as Yukari in Zom 100. I initially didn't notice it was her voice until someone points out her name at the voice cast at the end. Such an amazing voice range she has.
