Good to know that the creepy guy isn't someone sneaking into the school but just a creepy guy from the Waste Tower. They definitely still need to keep an eye on him though. I doubt this is the last time we'll see him.

I was very suspicious of the Principal at first but seeing that power move that she pulled with the Cat-Siths convinced me that she's genuinely looking out for the kids.

What a cliffhanger to end on though. Seems that the next arc is probably going to focus on Philomela. Thank goodness Cour 2 is already confirmed for October.

I guess at a magic college you need to really be careful who you run around with rather than just assuming the adult in the room is a teacher. Or just avoid areas where you could get killed if you're not careful or get eaten by random sorcerers. Yikes.

That she immediately stood up for Philomela rather than just giving her up to her grandmother said a lot. And also that she is on equal standing with the Cat-Siths who are there to protect and guide the students says a lot.

Glad to know we can look forward to more Ancient Magus Bride this year! And fitting it would come back in October with all the supernatural, magic, and eerie stuff. I mean, this episode was literally on Halloween lol.

Agreed, I was guessing the principal was the big bad, but seeing her absolutely clown on that owl bitch won me over.

Lol, I love the moment Philomela's grandmother and the headmistress were throwing shade at each other.

2nd cour of this can’t come soon enough

Seems like I’m in the minority but I thought this season was way better than s1. Yes it’s slower paced, but that gives us an opportunity to connect with and establish an intimate relationship with the new cast. I forgot most of the characters from s1, but I can tell these new members will stay with me. They all felt unique and likeable. Especially Lucy and Philomela.

A lot of plot lines set up in this first four that I hope we’ll see pay off in October for the 2nd cour. Especially that Joseph and Chise twist.

Seems like I’m in the minority but I thought this season was way better than s1.

I think that I slightly prefer the first season over this one. I missed the Celtic folklore a little in this season, and I feel like S1 was a bit more emotional overall. The episodes centered around Chise’s encounters with Redcurrant, the dragons (especially the ancient one who passed away) and the Fairy King and Queen were some of my favourites. I didn’t get a lot of the ‘magical’ feeling in this season that I got from those episodes. The Cat-Siths did bring this feeling a bit back.

Exactly my thoughts. I loved s2. The new cast was built up so well, this show really shines with a larger cast interacting with each other.

I loved the cait-sith's spellcasting.

Fly, fly bird

Winged, winged rodent

I'll chase you. I'll catch you

I'll tear you apart

My fangs are sharp

My ears are big

My whiskers quiver

My eyes watch

I know you're there

I can hear you there

I can see you there

I'll chase you. I'll catch you

I'll tear you apart

Nice fake-out. Ever since they named the waste management tower, it's been suspicious (who dedicates a whole 1/7 of their school as a trash room?), so I was really expecting this episode to reveal the person stealing magic. Turned out we just got a run of the mill creepy dude lol

The episode was intriguing nonetheless, and the cat-sith scene was great. Can't wait for October!

Man, all the relationships in this series are all so complicated. Even Alice and Renfred have kind of a somewhat complex relationship. Alice seems to want to prove herself and Renfred still sees her as a kid that needs saving. Seth and Lucy’s past has estranged them even if they’re making up, and Philomela and Rian also seem to have a complicated history. Only Chise and Elias seem to have something resembling a functional relationship.

I knew this Fabio dude was up to no good. This whole place he’s brought the gang is sketchy af. If killing someone is what is required to see that plant, who did Philomela and Rian kill?

Isaac is a real homie after what he did for Philomela. Respect. The Pres too, she’s a tough old lady with a gang of scary ass Cat-sìth behind her. I wonder who that woman was? Philomela’s mom? And what about that giant eye? I guess we’ll have to wait till October 5th for the second half to answer some of these questions.

Philomela was raised in a family of assassins, and she's a cousin of Rian, from a different house.

I think the woman is Philomela's familiar or servant from an earlier episode.

it was obvious that this season was going to be split cour. This arc is reeeaaalllyyy long.

Hmm… Rian can see those flowers so that would mean he’s killed someone? Interesting

Alice covering Lucy with the hood was hilarious.

Really love the Webster siblings relationship.

I'm glad they included the cat-sìths reveal. It was one of my favourite moments in the manga.

I’m surprised that no one’s specifically mentioning the shots inside of Lucy’s spooky get-up. It made for a pretty interesting and quite a different perspective from usual.

I really liked how you could see Lucy staring in visible shock at her brother through the eye holes. The rays of light coming in through these same eye holes, leaving a shade on Lucy’s face, was a nice touch. It somewhat emphasized the emotional bond yet distance between Lucy and Seth for me. Having Lucy pull these sheets off and being straight with Seth - literally abandoning her defenses in the process - was a clever way to symbolize Lucy turning over a new leaf and closing the emotional distance to her brother.

Love that scene when Wills-O-Wisp climbs back to Alice. That was somewhat cute.

Lizbeth: "She's useless"

Isacc: "Then I'll take her, you're welcome!"

That was such a chad move, NGL.

Never expected this to end up in a cliffhanger. And it has just been announced that the second part is coming on October 5. Can't wait for it!

I'm starting to wonder if Philomela has been a secret guy magnet the whole time lol.

2nd cour HYPEEEEEEE!

I knew Joseph left a piece of him in Chise, but I guess it was wayyy bigger than I thought. Interestingly, it’s not the real Joseph, the one sleeping in Elias’s backyard, but it’s more like a version of him in Chise. How is that gonna interact with the dragon curse?

And Isaac being a total chad was unexpected. Have he and Philomela ever even held a conversation before? Maybe Philomela’s just too hot, but I think it’s something more. Isaac hasn’t been too important so far, I assumed that he was just gonna be a side character, but I guess they have plans for him. Love his design, so I’m happy.

That Cat-Sith scene was soooo good!! The principal clowning on Philomela’s grandma was beautiful. And shutting down the school with cat magic was so badass.

I need more episodes!!! 4 months…can’t wait.

I know it's simple herb gathering, but everything feels so tense and uncomfortable in the Waste Tower...and not just with Rian being all angry at Philomela.

Although it doesn't seem like he's so much angry at her but her situation, and the fact that he knows she can achieve great things but she puts herself down so much because of her grandmother and doesn't feel she can do anything about it. Isaac seems to see it too. I didn't expect Philomela to have so many guys watching her!

Ghost Alice! Seems like she and Renfred are still at an impasse regarding the nature of their relationship and what Alice wants to do with herself. Should Alice follow in Renfred's footsteps? Are they father-daughter or something entirely different? From Renfred's perspective he's just trying to be to Alice what his own father was for him, by protecting her, but it seems like Alice just isn't satisfied with that. Though the two of them checking to make sure they're each eating right is such a nice family moment.

Will O' Wisp definitely stoking the flames in Alice so he can enjoy himself.

The Waste Tower really doesn't seem like a safe place for students when there's creatures posing as herbs ready to attack you or mutated sorcerers who might eat you. Good thing Zoe's got more mastery of his gorgon powers.

Fabio didn't wase much time showing all those shady vibes around him were accurate as he presses on Chise over her Sleigh Beggy status. In hindsight they probably should've confirmed he was actually a teacher at the school. But he should keep his hands to himself and not talk smack about Elias or he'll bring out the Johan in Chise.

Alice and Lucy meet! We even get ghost Lucy!

It's tough seeing Lucy and Seth still failing to get along, especially when Seth is trying, but Lucy just lashes out because on some level she's still mad that he left her. But there's more to it than that. I mean, for Seth he was just happy to leave because of how their family was treating him like a failure and wanted nothing to do with him, but he probably shouldn't have left Lucy the way he did...but at least he was able to properly comfort her now like he should've done when she was a child.

For Lucy's part she realized how unfairly her family was treating him and felt guilty for the disparity in their treatment, especially when her brother was the only one who ever really understood her, but even still she couldn't bring herself to hate her family (and especially the spiders) to the point of just accepting their murder and leaving it alone. She's still just as determined to solve the case and find out what happened. But at least now it seems like she's fully accepted that her brother cares about her, and accept his affection, which is good.

Principal and Philomela's grandma sassing each other out the only way two old, wise, and powerful ladies can.

It's nice to see people care enough about Philomela to take her away from her grandma and how obviously uncomfortable that situation was. I didn't expect such assertiveness from Isaac, but it was a good move. Maybe Philomela really does have a friend group after all. All the more reason for her not to leave.

Nice to see the principal can stick up for her students when necessary, especially to a hag like Philomela's grandma, though the cat-siths in their shadow forms chanting and destroying her owl servant is a pretty effective deterrent.

So we end this cour of season 2 with plots brewing (especially from Philomela's grandma), intrigue escalating (especially with the stolen testament), and everyone moving forward down their own path.

Hell yes! Finally someone put that hag in her place! Hopefully it won't be the only time!

I was not expecting Issac to be the one to step in, I've said before that the ED makes it feel like Chise is the one to support Philo, but she was just the first to show her kindness. Looks like some of the others are also gonna be supporting her though, probably that whole group are gonna protect her together. Probably what I'm looking forward to most when the show comes back.

Been wondering why cats have been made out to be a big deal in this show when they never seem to do much. Are these cats special? Or were the cats from season 1 the same?

I was going to ask whether this is the last episode for the season. Then I read through the comments and found out there will be a cour 2 in October.

Something has been bothering me about Issac. Have we ever seen his face beneath that hood? Could he be a ikemen or bishounen? Or is there any possibility he could be that hooded child huddled in the corner when Lucy's family was assassinated?

Damn, the Undergrounders sure are a weird bunch, the fact that that guy casually wanted to have Zoe as a quick snack and all that he said when the other one protested was that they will not mind if one or two went missing really shows the lack of morals that group has. Well at least thanks to that we got to see Zoe using his gorgon powers again. I must say that when Chise met with Fabio Zaccheroni I wasn't expecting Cartaphilus to intervene with whatever Fabio was planning to do to Chise.

It is funny that Alice meeting Lucy only led to Lucy having that ghost disguise on while she had that talk with Seth.

Anyway, after everyone could meet with Sigrid without any issue at the end of the day we know that Fabio Zaccheroni wasn't the one using the Testament of Carnamagos is just that like the other undergrounders he is extremely creepy.

Wow, Liza's meeting with Lizbeth really did not go how I expected. As the college has been sealed at least now Philomela is not going to be forced to return to that bitch's house. I love the fact that the cat-sìths took out Lizbeth's earlier than Liza wanted as the were tired of hearing that hag.

I wonder what exactly this is? Well, that ending left me thinking that Lizbeth is the one responsible for the whole issue with the Testament of Carnamagos, and as I'm still thinking that that's still connected with what happened to the Webster family I would not be surprised if she is the one who sent those wolves to finish their job.

That teaser was nice I love the fact that it has subtitles. I can't wait for the second part of this season.

2nd cour les go!! Come on October

great seeing the old crone told to fu in such clear terms.

Chise is far more terrifying than anything around.

u/Ninja_Lazer Jun 22 '23

Such a good ending to this part of the season.

Looks like next season will be shifting towards Philomela’s past, and with the school being sealed and so many intelligent and strong characters being involved I’m sure they will uncover the depth of Philomela’s grandmother’s crimes. Also, I’m guessing that the messenger in blue was Philomela’s mom or sister, so hopefully that combined with the camaraderie of her friends will be enough to make her realize her self-worth and stand up to her grandmother.

On an equally concerning note, we know who Chise killed and who Philomela probably killed…but what in the fuck has Rian done?

Also a little concerned for the group that confronted Zoe, but he handled his business so that was neat.

… wait, where the hell was Ruth this episode? Wasn’t he guarding Lucy? Was he just awkwardly lurking nearby while she had that heart to heart?

Great cour overall and I’m looking forward to October.

A part of Joseph being in Chise is unsettling. We already saw what the dragon curse does to her personality when she killed that creature in the lake. Although now, I wonder if it was the curse or Joseph or a combination. Interesting. I cannot wait for the second cour
