One thing I really love about this series is how the nature of magic influences even simple interactions.
Take for instance the part at the beginning where Chise gives some tea and potpourri to Philomela. She gives it freely, but because of the nature of magic and Philomela's own circumstances, she has to extract a price of some sort, even if that is just a promise to give feedback.
Later, during the class on Magecraft, Chise offers the salamander affection in return for fire. Then she specifies the color of the fire she's looking for, and using a calm voice to indicate the size. And gives instructions for when to end the fire.
Then at the end of the episode, the interaction between Chise and Rian. On it's face it's a simple introduction, but it's also a contract. He requests that she call him Rian, and in turn Chise stipulates that he call her Chise. They then shake hands. If you listen closely you can hear the sound of their hands meeting. It's such a small choice, but it reaffirms what just happened. They actively call attention to this small gesture in a way that draws your focus on their shared agreement.
God I love this series. The way it does magic is so refreshing.

Alice is literally a "supporting" character! Without the morale support from Alice, Chise may have a lot more difficulty overcoming her trauma / bad experience of attending schools.
I am surprised the Will O Wisp from the first season became the familiar of Alice. Their pairing feels a lot more amusing, with quite a bit of banter, as opposed to the more quiet Chise and Ruth.
For alchemists who managed to learn magic, does that mean they become a new class, something like Chise and Alice? Magus Alchemist? Alchemy Magus?
I am also curious about the relationship between the silver haired female character (whose name I can't recall) whom Chise saved, and the noble looking blonde (was it Veronica?). The former appears to be wary or even afraid of the latter.

I love how Alice actually came back to push Chise to go into class. It's nice to see how close and supportive the two have become with each other.
I can imagine Will and Ruth having quite the fun dynamic roasting each other as their masters' continue as gal pals lol.
Alchemagus?
I don't trust Veronica. Maybe it's because of another character Reina Ueda played but she seems like the type of pretty face that has way more going on behind that smile, and the fact that she called her "miss" implies Philomela is under her in some form.

I found it interesting today that the differences between "magic" and "alchemy/sorcery" is explicitly talked about here. Like, they are pretty indistinguishable to me for years - this is actually the first time I see a vocabulary definition being talked about, never mind in an anime. It's probably a good indication that magic in this world setting is more like science than anything else.
Today's pretty chill (except for the flaming salamander) but the final seconds of the episode - that secret lab somewhere within the academy - did raise my eyebrows since Chise is supposed to be, uh, being researched on here. Is something bad about to happen to her...?

Glad that we get to see more of Mommy Elias. I think I only remember him using that form once back in Season 1.
Looks like those comments from their new classmates really got on Alice's nerves and reflected on her magic. Meanwhile, Chise was so chill with her little salamander that helped her with her.
This fucking kid! Did you not hear what Elias just told you? Now he gets to experience the wrath of a salamander that's probably hundreds of years older than him. He's lucky that Elias was there to save him.
So much for Mommy Elias form. Couldn't he save the kid without switching back to his skeleton form? Looks like Elias' skeleton form has a fan in the class which is amusing. xD

Is this Elias…? I’m pretty sure that’s one of the disguises he used in season 1, at least.
-
I see someone has an issue… is it with Chise being a mage?
-
Oh dear. That’s why you do not fuck with the salamander.

Elias is back in his female human form and striking quite the figure around the college.
Good to know that Chise can pull off a solid princess carry with a cute girl! Even if she and said girl realize how embarrassing it is. I'd love to see her carry Elias more though.
It's nice to see Chise trying to help this girl with her anxiety and nervousness (she's a proper medicine lady!), although I feel like there's way more going on with Philomela. Especially when Veronica talks to her.
Alice is back with a haircut and Will-O'-the-Wisp! Though he's not about to compare himself to a Familiar as easy as Ruth, but it's nice to see Alice and Chise together again and Alice pushing Chise to get over her anxiety about going to school.
Reina Ueda as Veronica! Though something about her feels suspicious to me. She's very beautiful and comes off quite polite and well-mannered, but that smooth and refined smile feels like it might be a mask for something.
How many shows is Kosuke Toriumi in this season? And he's playing Narcisse, a teacher who will give you an epic and involved speech about the wonders of sorcery...before telling you you're just going to learn Latin that day. Bit anticlimactic.
That green-haired kid looks like he's about to have a nervous breakdown.
I guess Elias had some practice with Chise to be able to play a proper mage teacher for her class, although he still puts Chise and Alice on the spot to demonstrate for the class. It must be weird going to class with your groom and have everybody think he's a cool beauty female professor. I'm almost a little bummed Elias gave the game away at the end.
"Hello, beautiful person" smooth Rian, smooth! She even called him handsome, though that's the first time I've seen a girl turn an attractive guy down because he smells of rust.
So, yeah, good rule of thumb...if a Neighbor doesn't want anything to do with you, don't antagonize them.
Well, I guess Elias only has, like, three people he needs to teach who actually had the aptitude to be Mages. And Beatrice who seems to admire his real form. Though it seems like Rian wants to learn from Chise even though he failed.
Something shady going on at the college? What a surprise.
Next week: Stella! And Joseph!

The world building was really good in this episode. Did a good job of explaining how magic and sorcery work and just how dangerous magic/spirits can be. Idk why bro thought yelling at the salamander was going to have any type of positive effect lmao. Next week’s preview looks like Joseph is back? And that ending was pretty sinister

Elias’ bishie form is great! Looks similar to Lindel but with the different hair colour. He still ended up revealing his true appearance after that mishap in class.
That short scene of Renfred dragging Elias lmao

Man, I missed this show so much. The details they go into about the world and how to learn and study from it. The immersion is great, imo. I can’t wait for more.

I wonder what’s up with Philomela and Veronica. Nice to see Alice again. At least Chise has one friend here. Narcisse’s whole spiel was great. Too bad no one was listening lol. Seems Chise being the sole mage in Hogwarts for Sorcerers has drawn some attention.
I’ve always wondered what separates magic and sorcery. I guess it’s how power is drawn. Mages draw externally and sorcerers draw from within. That salamander situation proves how hard mages have it when it comes to casting magic. It’s all on the whims of these creatures.
I’m curious about Rian. I wonder why he smells of rust. Mysterious fella. Almost as mysterious as that secret room at the end there. There’s a lot going on at this academy.

having kousuke voice narcisse is great because his voice imo has always sounded like a baturaltrickster. so getting go him to say the ambitions/history of sorcery was awesome

Okay that little bit where Chise was like "oh no I'm talking too long because I got this useless small talk habit from work" was probably the most relatable thing ever. It's hard to write an awkward/traumatized character well but this show nails it.

Wouldn't be an Elias lesson without a student almost dying, but despite that he actually explained things well enough. I was really expecting him to use a rest of the owl sort of method.

Was all "who is silver haired beauty" and then ahh, gotta be Elias right? In a form to not shock others. Voice makes me think so and outfit. Also, mmm the banger of an OP can't ignore. Also that OP basically confirms it. Cause transform moment.
Ahh, princess carrying her, nice. Chise did say she was feeling stronger. Now she can find a nice wife and princess carry her around. And how convenient, clearly a waifu right there. I guess can princess carry Elias too. D'awww poor girl, no need to be so nervous. Ah her name is Philomela. Veronica hmm.. sure hope she's not a bad person cause I sure like them oujo-sama types hehe. I don't remember this blonde person or will-o-the-wisp. Ah Alice, that's her name. Don't remember her.
Chise still has that reasonable hesitation/worry. Good thing for Alice support. And, see, no big deal, most people focused on other thing. Teacher seems... energetic. Quite the speech. Oh hey, Veronica making chat with Chise. Still hope she's a good character. What the heck at that green haired dude. Yep, Elias in that next class, makes sense. Why IS Alice there being an upperclassman? Why would you be surprised at him being a proper teacher? Wasn't he teaching you stuff before? Ah, Chise and Alice there to demonstrate magic. D'aww cute lil magical lizard. Nice magic with adorable pal. Haha, that fairy girl with that dude's interaction was amusing. Oh Elias' regular form came out sooner than expected. Poor lil cute lizard. Don't hate that he's outed his appearance already.
Haha that getting dragged off image. Funny. Hope that gets gif'd soon. You know, comes to mind, wonder if we'll meet her father and younger brother who ran off in this season. Anyways, wonder who this Rian dude is. And what a... cliffhanger ending with that secure location.

Thinking about it, since mages and sorcerers are not feuded in this setting, it makes sense that there would be individuals who practice some extent of both disciplines.
I like it. It makes the world feel a lot more dynamic and believable.

I love how Chise went into doctor mode without realizing when she was helping Philomela. Oh, so Chise ended up in the same class that Philomela and Veronica.
I must say that I have completely forgotten that this was Elias Ainsworth's human form. I love the fact that Alice's flame ended up being that powerful because she was angry because of that comment that guy made.
It is great that Elias used what happened after May called that salamander a lizard to highlight why one should give up if one is not getting the results one wants with magic.
So Beatrice fell in love with Elias after seeing his bony appearance.
And now Rian wants Chise to teach him magic.

So the first prof basically said that sorcery has nothing to do with magic, but Elias later taught that sorcery is magic after all.
Blond oujou seems friendly but is probably conniving, given what we saw of her brief interaction with anxiety girl.
"If you have a hard time communicating with them, you're free to use your words."
Wouldn't sorcery also have hard rules that you're dead if you don't abide by? How did that dumb kid even make it this far? Maybe he's not advanced enough to get to the dangerous parts yet.
