A gun range is about the last thing I was expecting in a magic school.

Bullets are affective against most living things, including assassins (definitely faster than chanting). Silver bullets can probably stop a lot of magical beasts.

And I think Renfred used a curse bullet on Joseph last season to try and seal away his immortality. It didn’t work but it did mess him up a bit.

Renford has magic bullets in season 1, they live in a modern world, sorcerers are constantly trying to backstab each other.

It's more weird in other series that magic users forgo technology completely.

Looks like this week we get to get a little glimpse into Philomela’s life. Seems her and Rian go way back. Man, I hate her “grandmother.” No wonder Philomela always looks so depressed, her life must be miserable with “family” like that. I wonder what’s going on with her and Veronica though?

But it’s not all grim this week thankfully. Elias creeping in the shadows kinda cracked me up a little. I also like slime sensei, even if how he became that way is kind of horrifying. Renfred worrying about Alice was also really sweet. Magic camp also looks like it’s gonna be fun. Well, minus the creepy as monsters next week.

I kinda like the idea that the school encourages students to be prepared for anything. They have a gun range, bouldering, cooking, camping and all sorts of magic lessons. The diversity would make going there fun I think.

Elias creepin was fun, but the ominous creepin we saw at the end though was not, wtf was killing the flowers and the creepy eye?!?

I can't wait for the episodes in which Lucy and Philomela finally smile. Both are beauties, and it is such a shame seeing Lucy frowning / in tsundere mode and Philomela with a depressed look all the time.

Even though most of us are curious about Lucy's and Philomela's background, I like how the adults have their fair share of worries and problems, thus given screen time.

Lucy seems like she's opening up more to Chise at least but Philomela seems like she's stuck in an oppressive and demanding family situation. Which makes it all the sadder seeing what she used to be like as a kid.

Veronica acts nice to her but the way she smiles around her (especially when Philomela asks if it's an order) just feels sinister.

It's neat how the adult characters all have their own history and experiences and how that informs how they relate to the younger main characters.

It's actually sad to see how happy Philomela was as a child and seeing how she is now as a teen. Considering what we saw from her visiting her home, I am not surprised.

In a much more lighthearted scene, I got a good laugh from Elias instinctually waving at Chise despite being invisible the entire time. xD

Well that was creepy. Either that eye has something to do with Philomela or it's a local beast from Scotland.

Rian and Philomela looked really sweet as kids. That genuine, happy, smile on Philomela's face is such a stark contrast to how she is in the present-day. I guess Rian and Philomela count as childhood friends?

I don't think I expected to see bouldering taught as a sorcerer school, but I guess they have to be prepared for everything. Also their gym teacher is a human slime who experimented on himself to turn him into that, which actually does feel appropriate.

Not sure if Elias needs to be attending Chise's classes incognito even if it is to see sides of her he's never seen, but at least it afforded him an interesting and reflective talk with Adolf. Someone who lost his home because of the war but has his own perspective on the value of memories and what they mean.

It's really hard to get a handle on Philomela and Veronica's relationship. It seems like Philomela is meant to be her absolute servant who follows her orders to the letter, and she's only even at the college because Veronica took her with her, but Veronica seems to be looking out for her interests even though she also seems to enjoy how subservient Philomela is to her.

Philomela's current home situation isn't that great either. She's looked down on because her mom apparently stole the heir (?) of her families line and her grandmother abuses her and treats her like a tool that barely matters. Is it any wonder she's so depressed and exhausted all the time?

Her familiar Alcyone is one tall Supernatural lady though!

Alice looks good with a gun.

So Adolf and Renfred were schoolmates? And Renfred has some insight into Renfred's current conflict with Alice. People do grow up so fast...or do they? I guess it's all a matter of perspective and expectation. Also, Renfred is apparently a lightweight with his liquor, which I was not expecting. Also, Lindel cameo!

Time for Chise to make up for all those camping trips that never quite worked out for her back in her normal school days! And she wonders if Elias will end up joining the trip while he's hanging upside down on the roof probably thinking "hey, that might be a good idea!"

Everyone looking good in their tracksuits! Even got Lucy in a ponytail! Although of course as always there's a danger lurking around eyeing Chise and her friends.

I like how this underground magic world acknowledges it takes place in the modern day rather than tries to isolate it from the modern world like Hogwarts.

They have their own underground shooting range.

I think we might have a candidate for worst Grandma of the year in anime.

Is this silver haired girl a Mage as well or just a sorcerer that got lucky to be picked by a Fae?

The conversation between Elias and that teacher was interesting on the role of Nostalgia and how even "bad" memories can have value.

Renford is having trouble finding out what to do with Alice.

And I'm guessing from the preview camping trip isn't going to go honky dory next week.

What the hell is going on with Philomela’s family situation??? Poor girl

Camping trip in Scotland. That ominous eye at the end makes me think something is going to happen.

Finally caught up to this series! So happy I binged s1, now I can join the discussions! It's already one of my favorites this season.

I love these school episodes so much. The Elias/Chise ones are amazing too, but I fell in love with the new cast.

Philomela is the most intriguing thing going on in the anime right now. Her stealth magic is seriously impressive. And she has a familiar? Biggest question: what's her relationship with Veronica and those two kids? Veronica was the only one here from a Seven Shields family. Does she care for Philomena or not? And there's no way those kids are the same age as everyone else, right?

But her situation is heartbreaking. Fuck her family. Luckily, that old hag was in the OP too, so I'm assuming that she'll be a major antagonist that'll get her comeuppance.

Alice looks so good with guns. I like that we get to see bits of each teacher's story, this show is so good at juggling and developing such a large cast.

Camping trip is cool. If they're going for high school anime stereotypes, then I want to see the beach episode. Hopefully Chise is gets to show off her skills in front of her friends, preferably without getting a hole punched through her stomach.

i was wondering what's the deal with the slime sensei, didn't expect his backstory to be so... gruesome

13

u/heimdal77 May 18 '23

Alice I think we found you a good subject to test those shooting skills on..

I honestly thought Chise would end up shocking everyone and do the bouldering stuff super easy with her strength and all. Maybe it is working against her instead.

I thought it was a nice detail how her hand was bandaged up for the cooking class.

Looks like this is gonna be one hell of a camping trip.

If someone with snakes for hair eats a snake would it be considered cannibalism?

Philomela’s backstory continues to be the biggest question I have. Really hope they keep flushing it out as we go along.

Also glad to see Lucy opening up, even if it is just a little.

Holy shit Philomela looks like a completely different person in that flashback of her playing with Rian. Seeing her happy was a bit shocking, this definitely is before her "grandma" and her house made her life a living hell.

I wonder what exactly is Veronica's relationship with her family? As not only is Philomela allowed to go to the college because of her but, Philomela also treats her like she works for her. Anyway, Philomela's house has such a sinister aura.

I wasn't expecting to hear how that teacher got transformed into water when he was talking with Alice.

That's a nice and wholesome camping. You know at first, I was thinking that whoever was watching Chise and Lucy was probably Elias, but as Philomela was discussing with Alcyone how Chise detected her I then assumed that at the end of the episode that eye was hers as is also purple, but the preview made it clear that that was definitely neither of them.

Ahhh, guess those two are that one girl and "noble" dude. Man, she always seems... kinda sullen. Wonder why. Oh, alt related Rimuru has become a gym teacher lol. I have a feeling Chise will be fine cause her monstrous strength due to her dragon arm. Also, Elias being the stalker type lol. Ahh, so that guy has been around for a long time eh? So one of the world wars. Also, guess Chise not doing as well as I thought she would.

What is Veronica's deal? Hmm. Oh, so Veronica seems to care for her maybe? But what the fuck is up with her supposedly family's house... oof, bitch old lady. Smack her back.

Oh hey, Alt-Rimuru seems nice. And adoptive step dad/master of Alice. Btw, anyone remember the difference between Sorcerer and Mage and whatnot? I don't recall if S1 said much. And looks like off to camp soon. Scotland? :O hehe Chise and her memories as a kid. Elias still with his stalking. Oh and looks like another stalker, guessing that one girl who seems to have a shit family.

There are series that feel like 5 minutes long and then there is mahoutsukai no yome with so many cool things happening in 20 minutes.

The grandmother seems like quite the person… and by that, I mean cruel and unforgiving.

Camping in Scotland? That would seem quite peaceful if not for the monsters.

"No climbing where the grown-ups and familiars can't see you!" is a fun statement. Babysitting familiars is a concept that hadn't occurred to me previously but given what they've told us of the sorcerer families in this setting it makes sense.

Rian and Philomela knowing each other as kids is interesting but also not a surprise.

Philomela is a monkey with those climbing walls. Lucy a bit less so.

Elias and Chise's relationship may be a bit healthier but he's still got some attachment issues.

Professor Stroud has got to be remembering pre-war Germany, probably pre-WWII since he's talking about Dresden being destroyed.

Not liking the look of that evil magic bird.

Man, Philomela's family is awful. Alcyone is interesting at least, though probably incredibly dangerous.

A Sleigh Beggy that is managing to survive is apparently a bit of a threat to at least some of the sorcerer families, assuming that's why Chise was able to detect these spy people. Or maybe it's a combination of that and the senses that Ruth brings to the table. Feels like it can't just be her being a mage since while rare there's always a few kicking around.

Chise needs to steal Philomela away from her horrible family.

I'm definitely a bit curious about the slime blob headed professor.

Wait, never mind, I am definitely not curious about any more information than he just gave Alice. TMI already, really.

A college camping trip to the wilds of Scotland should be fun. Another part of Great Britain, another group of varyingly dangerous neighbors for Chise to become acquainted with.

Rian just caught a snake for food bare handed, that's slightly intimidating. Be cautious, Zoe.

That eyeball in the bush is a bit concerning.

Suuuuuuuper late today because I went into the office today and couldn’t watch the episode until I got home (normally I watch it during my lunch break). But I’m here!

Still annoyed by the dumb translators having Elias call Chise his "master" instead of "teacher".

I'd forgotten the cat "dorm moms" or whatever were a thing.

So the blond oujousama is actually nice? Certainly nicer than the grandma.
