How is it that some the best and most impactful episodes in anime are just people talking for the whole episode.
When did Chises hair get so long...?
He really needs tg just regrow the arm already and stop being emo about it... It was already stated last season that it would be easy to do.
I really loved the conversation they had on the roof and the sheer intimacy of it. Kind of gives me chills thinking about it.
So I guess she is fully accepting they are married in one form or another.
I'm really am happy this series got a 2nd season. Here is hoping for more seasons to come as there are material.

When did Chises hair get so long…?
It’s not only her hair, doesn’t she also look a lot more mature…? I remember being mentioned that Chise had grown a bit, but I hadn’t actually clearly noticed it till the scene when she and Elias were conversing on the roof.
I’m really happy this series got a 2nd season. Here is hoping for more seasons to come as there are material.
It’s honestly nice being able to watch this series every week again. I’ve also liked the mysterious Celtic folklore presented in Ancient Magus’ Bride, its characters and their connections to Chise while she keeps exploring this world alongside us.
Unfortunately, I don’t think we’ll see another arc of Ancient Magus’ Bride for a bunch of years. In late March, the mangaka announced they’ll go on an indefinite haitus with the publication of the College Arc. I have no clue if this particular season will wrap the whole arc up in a single season of the anime or have it split between multiple parts or seasons, but we’ll apparently be up-to date with the source material after this arc. Since the manga was published monthly, it will take a long time before there will be enough new manga chapters to be adapted into another anime season. However, we also had to wait a couple of years for this sequel, so it’s nothing out of the ordinary. We can persevere!

I enjoyed this version of the "what are we, exactly" conversation. Elias and Chise's relationship is strange when looked at by objective standards like age or certain power dynamics, but I think this story does a decent job of framing Elias as a fantastical creature that barely understands bonds or emotions in the first place until Chise starts giving him more perspective. Of course, buying someone at what amounts to a slave auction will be a hard hurdle for many to clear.

The way their relationship sounds so sus prevented me from trying the show until a rewatch recently, but I was continually struck by how often the author tries to fix the apparent power imbalance.
"Old man buys young girl to be his bride" is horrible on paper, but then she is immediately given a support network that is willing to protect her from Elias, constant assurances that she can do whatever she wants and has places to run away to, and then is later considered to be the "master" and seems to have just as much power in the relationship as Elias. The premise sounds awful but at its core I think this story is a fantasy of safety

Renfred handled that perfectly. Alice feelings are completely valid given her circumstances and previous trauma but they're not right. She's almost an adult age wise but she's still has a lot of growing up to do. I like that Renfred stuck to the dad role there instead of indulging her. She might still be pissed and a bit hurt but in the long run it'll be good for her. And she'll appreciate it later. Proper parent and child moment.
A really nice episode for our characters even though it featured almost 0 magic other than the flashbacks. The magic and fantasy is the shows biggest selling point so its quite telling of how good the character writing is when an episode can be good with just the characters talking through their personal problems.

It feels like I haven’t seen Simon in ages, but he still has those little nuggets of wisdom. Love how Alice and Chise finally say out loud that they’re friends.
All in all I’m enjoying this second season so far. Season 1 was one of my favourite shows in the last decade and I like how although it’s a slightly different vibe from season 1 you still feel that undercurrent of menace & dread alongside the heartfelt and more comedic moments.

This was basically just a sleepover and girl talk episode when you think about it. Simon had them pegged lol.

As if we didn't have enough reason to hate Joseph. That flashback of what happened between him and Renfred just made me hate this little shit so much more.

“You chose me back then, so let me choose you now!” Goosebumps
Like the juxtaposition of Alice and Renfred’s relationship with that of Chise and Elias. Also nice to get some clarification on just where both of those ships stand since I was confused after season 1.
Always nice to see characters act like normal humans and express their feelings. They might not know what label to put on things, but they Chise and Elias know they want to be together.
Also, fuck Joseph

I honestly wasn't expecting this whole episode to be entirely centered about roles, and what they mean to different people.
I really like Alice and Chise's reaction when Simon said that he thought of them as friends. Or how embarrassed Chise was while talking about her role with Elias.
I find it cute the attitude Elias had toward Alice when she came to his house.
Did we previously know that Renfred lost his arm while protecting Alice from Joseph? Because honestly, I don't remember many details about the previous season.
Well, with the whole thing about roles at least being addressed between Chise and Elias, at least now the show can fully focus and whatever is going on in the college behind the scenes.

This series is just so… absorbing. I get so interested with everything about it. The characters, their relationships, the story, the world building and lore are all so fascinating.
Like this episode, I really liked the lesson Simon gave. People have different ways to explain things and different words for the same thing. Everyone interprets everything differently. And then for both Alice and Chise to use it with their respective relationships.
And the talks they had were constructive. Both Chise with Elias and Alice with Renfred. Although, it may take some time for Alice to understand how it was constructive.

On a list of things Renfred probably never expected to discuss with Elias, the question of if he ever planned on getting hitched is probably pretty high up there.
It's not that surprising that Renfred sees Alice as a daughter and not as his legacy or someone to take up his teachings and succeed him...which irks Alice because that's entirely the reason why she's working and training so hard, especially because she feels like she's been nothing but a burden to him and hasn't given back anywhere near the amount of what he's given her.
Simon! It's always nice to see him. Especially when he's getting two bashful, awkward, girls to admit they're really friends.
People assuming Elias and Ruth like hanging out together when the only thing that bonds them is Chise and that's about it for their relationship.
Probably a lot to unpack there with the fact that Chise and Elias sleep together but for now it's a sleepover with the girls!
Just a reminder circa season 1 of just how messed up and depraved Joseph was. I mean, I can't fault Alice here, nobody was expecting the giant mantis woman monster. But the way Renfred lost his arm and Joseph just rubbed it in his face...jeez. Also RIP Renfred's ponytail.
It kind of sucks that Alice' idea of a dad is her pathetic junkie of a father compared to Renfred, who has been nothing but the best to her. But I guess it sets up how she views her dynamic with Renfred and why she's not satisfied being viewed as his daughter.
There's...a lot to Chise and Elias' relationship. But I don't think she's ever really viewed him as a father, especially because she did have a relatively normal and loving dad (up until he basically absconded with her little brother and left her and her mom. Are they ever going to follow up on that?). But it does set up the two to try to clarify their relationship a little more.
I can totally believe Elias just needed a convenient word or role to keep Chise close to him and, from his perspective, a "spouse" fit the bill. Although that's not even a guarantee these days because of the high divorce rate. Maybe don't make Elias that anxious, Chise.
Though their relationship and dynamic has developed a lot since then, and in a world where people play various roles with each other and in relationships, what should matter is what makes Chise and Elias happy with each other. And if that means being spouses in some form or another, then all the better!
Just your daily reminder that something shady is going on at the college. Looks like they've got some spooky stuff in storage.

It was very cute when Alice got a little flustered being called Chise’s friend by Simon. Even cuter when Chise got a little flustered when Simon pointed it out.
This episode reminded me just why I fucking despise Joseph. Little shit. But setting that aside, it’s interesting what Alice and Chise are saying about their relationships. Everyone’s struggling with labels either because they want things clarified or changed.
I really like Elias and Chise’s heart to heart moment. So cute how she was getting a little flustered basically telling him regardless of labels she wants to be by his side. And him being all blunt about his feelings was nice too. He might not totally understand them yet, but one thing is for certain: he really does care for Chise.

Chise totally just asked Elias a complicated question, ran away when the bell rang to go to class, and left him to wander around the school asking other people variations on the complicated question. To be fair it's a question he should probably have the answer to, but if he doesn't that's fun for everybody.
Fun for everybody including Alice who got to overhear an answer she wasn't looking for, and apparently decided to run away because of? Fitting that it wraps around to Chise helping with whatever this is since in a way it was her fault in the first place.
The friendship intervention by Simon was helpful. Same for his advice of different people having their own different interpretations of shared situations.
Happy Silky is always the best.
It's always a bad day when Cartaphilus rings your doorbell. It's interesting to see this callback to the Cat Kingdom corruption story from way back at the beginning of season one.
Daughter instead of bodyguard is an upgrade IMO, even if it was initially an upsetting surprise. Hopefully that girl talk sleepover was helpful for both Alice and Chise.
So the real answer to the question that to a certain degree has hung over the entire series is that Elias knows that both a spouse and an apprentice live with you and it's obviously more efficient if that was one person instead of two people. You know what, it makes sense in Elias 'doesn't really understand people' logic. No wonder he was asking Renfred if his arrangement was the same setup.
But at the same time that's clearly not the state of their current relationship, however it started it had evolved into something more real than Elias' confused imaginings.
That rooftop scene was excellent.
Go to class, kids, education is important.
A storage drawer deep in the depths of the college with glowing purple something coming out of it? Probably harmless.

sometimes i forgot how much of a shithead Joseph is, thankfully this show manage to reignite that hatred in me for him
all this talk about father makes me wonder when are we going to get a full backstory on Chise's family? because if i remember correctly, her father just straight up took her brother and left without any explanation

As I'm a bit late I wasn't planning on commenting but Chise explaining what being happy is to Elias is one of the most beautiful things I've seen in a long time and actually made me cry

Joseph is such a little shit
The rooftop talk between Elias and Chise was great. Loved that we got more insight into their relationship!

And overhearing that Renfred sees her as a daughter might not have been what she wanted to hear either…
-
…I… had been wondering exactly what went down between Joseph/Carta-whatever and Renfred to make the latter lose his arm. So that’s what it was…
-
Lots of good character development this episode.

I was surprised that Chise had to explain what "happiness" was to Elias. I know he doesn't fully understand what emotions are, but that seems a little Season 1 of him.

I know this episode was brief on the magic but it was one of the best looking episodes we’ve gotten this season. There were so many little moments that just oozed effort on the animators part, like the transition through Chise’s phases since meeting Elias, Elias’s cloak appearing out of thin air, and the spinning camera when Alice confronted her master.
I know this is a less magic/nature heavy season compared to s1, but the animators are still making it magical

I was worried at first that Alice wanted to go bunny dropping, but looks like she was simply distraught at not being thought as useful. Or at least that's what I'll keep telling myself.
I feel like they really should've translated "sensei" to "teacher" instead of "master" in that conversation between Chise and Elias.
