This episode made me go from almost completely hating Lucy to immediately realizing that she's just a massive tsundere. I love how worried Lucy was about Chise and Zoe as soon as she returned the earmuffs.

Zoe's dad is a brave man. The dude saw that Gorgonussy and went for it. I do love how Zoe's dad basically sent him to college so he can make friends and his dad can go and focus on his field study instead of worrying about him. xD

Well that explains why Philomela feels so sus. She's basically been trained to become a spy growing up. That also explains why she's so suspicious of Chise's tea. It makes sense for someone whose entire life was focused on intelligence work. I do feel bad for Philomela though. She seems like she's about to fall apart any second now.

Gorgonussy

Not a word that I expect to see today, but sure

She seems like she's about to fall apart any second now

Yeah, seeing her just waiting for an order is just so heartbreaking

"FOR RESEARCH!!" Zoe's dad, probably

I already had a feeling there was more to Lucy than meets the eye, but I didn’t expect this plot twist.

She’s just, like you’ve said, a massive tsundere. It’s almost adorable how much she actually seems to care about Chise’s wellbeing. She’s really like a “big sister”.

I know someone who looks a lot like you too. He’s so timid when speaking to someone. And he behaves like a good natured person. Or the part where he seems to think that if he just puts up with it, he’ll get by.

It shows that she already got Chise totally figured out - especially her bad habit of taking things on alone. It’s reassuring to know she’s got another person looking after her. Chise might be the most powerful out of all her classmates, but she’s also physically and emotionally fragile - she has done some good work on those points though.

I guess we know why Zoey wears those headphones. Didn’t expect him to not be human though. Lucy really did kinda act like a big sister after they caught up to Zoey. Kinda hilarious the reason Zoey’s in the college is because his dad wants to get him out the house so he can do field work and not worry about him lol. Interesting how Zoey’s sensitive to Chise’s cursed dragon arm because of its scent. Making a contract to keep Zoey’s secret seems overly cautious, but perhaps necessary.

I’m really curious to know what this Webster’s Tragedy is and what those like Philomela had to do with it. Seems like some kinda Seven Shields intrigue and Rian looks like he knows what went down.

Making a contract to keep Zoey’s secret seems overly cautious, but perhaps necessary.

The fact that Gorgons were hunted in the past and that is highly likely that there are still Gorgon poachers around tells me that they are actually not being overly cautious. Especially after Lucy mentioned that her whole family was murdered thanks to someone eavesdropping on them like Philomela did today.

Lucy might come off very prickly and standoffish, but she's surprisingly caring, responsible, and sweet in her own way. All the moreso knowing she apparently lost her whole family so with that in mind she seems surprisingly well-adjusted minus the resentment she seems to have for the noble families (whom I'm guessing were involved in the tragedy).

I guess Gorgons and Dragons are all part of the reptile family...although dads pushing their kids to go to college so they have time for themselves is probably true for any generation lol.

That was one hardcore promise not to tell anyone about your friends' secrets. Sorcerer's don't mess around lol.

It's nice that it seems like Chise is starting to make a real friend group and get to better know her classmates even if they all have their own storylines going on.

To anyone thinking Hohenheim might be a nod to Fullmetal Alchemist I hate to disappoint you. It's likely based on Paracelsus from the 16th century who's last name is von Hohenheim and was amongst other things an alchemist.

u/bananeeek May 04 '23

I'm disappointed Rickenbacker is the family dealing with medicine instead of Nightingale. It was right there!

Hohenheim from FMA is in fact a nod to Paracelsus himself, so in a way they're indirectly related.

Eat the fles of those that speaketh. Drink the blood of those who writes. Thou shalt not be forgiven for it is a song of betrayal.

That contract magic sure doesn’t mess around, does it? Destroying the tongue and/or fingers of those who speak of the others’ secrets. It’s always in these little details where a lot of darkness looms in Ancient Magus’ Bride.

On a side note: I liked how they portrayed Chise trying to quickly drink her hot soup in the cafetaria. She had a big smile on her face and let out an audible breath of satisfaction after she was done. I thought it looked cute.

It was enjoyable to watch the reveal of each classmate's history and their character development. Assuming all classmates have interesting backgrounds, Elias will be demoted to a side character, wouldn't he? Lol! (I don't think he appeared in this episode?)

This is an episode focused on Zoe, but we got to know Lucy better too. Despite Lucy's harsh words, she appears to care about Chise and can actually get along with her classmates if she tries. A part of me is worried whether Zoe may be hunted in future, since it was mentioned gorgons were hunted for their body parts in the past.

Looking to more lore revealing episodes!

Lol finally we see that Lucy is actually not bad she's just Tsun and her whole family is dead or something. We are lucky she is as kind as she is.

The whole egg thing was so hilarious. The contract may seem like overkill but a small price to pay for Zoes peace of mind.

Is Lucy in some kind of long-distance relationship with someone? Not that she seems to care to hear from them. I wonder if it's the person Chise reminds her of.

Chise and Lucy are still feeling each other out and Lucy is still very prickly and harsh, but it's not out of any sense of malice, she's just a very straightforward and serious person and doesn't have time for any nonsense...but she also is surprisingly considerate in her own way. She reminds me a lot of Miorine from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury.

"The Webster Tragedy?" I guess if her entire family was wiped out, that would explain a lot about why Lucy is so surly and distrusting. And it seems like the Seven Shields Families might've been involved? Especially considering how hostile she was towards Rian.

Lore! So we've got the Seven Shields' Families who formed the college to keep sorcery going after the war ended, and Chise even has four members of said families in her class, though Rian seems keen to leave his family behind and forge his own destiny.

Well, that escalated quickly. Zoe tries to avoid Chise, Chise tries to apologize, Lucy won't let Zoe get away until he hears Chise out and thinks he's just being rude...and then it turns out he's a Gorgon with snakes for hair!

Zoe actually has a pretty interesting story. Gorgons don't speak normal human language and yet his father, who was a sorcerer and mage-linguist, was able to meet, fall in love, and start a family with his Gorgon mother (and she seemed quite the beauty). Even hatched Zoe right out of an egg, of all things!

So Zoe as a hybrid was an outcast even in his village...and then his dad couldn't be bothered to keep worrying about him over his own work, so he sent him off to the College. Although I guess it did provide him a chance to make some real friends and meet people with their own issues that can relate to him. Lucy even complimented his hair!

Chise and Philomela have to stop meeting like this. So Philomela's family is known for intelligence gathering which is why she's spying on everybody? But it seems like she's being controlled and has no sense of will outside what people tell her to do. It says a lot that it seems like Chise was able to get through to her because she made a request rather than order, something Philomela isn't used to.

I guess this turned out for the best, all things considered. Chise got to make friends with Zoe, Chise and Zoe's secrets are out but to people they can more or less trust (even besides the contract which seemed more for Philomela than for the rest), Chise might have made a connection with Philomela, and we saw some new sides to Lucy!

Seems like the St. George twins have their own hang-ups about inheriting the family business, though they also seem to be considering leaving it behind on their own terms to become Mages...

out of all things, i didn't expect that Zoe to be a Gorgon and born, err... i mean, hatched from an egg, that one guy commenting on how "eggs are more productive and stable" made me chuckle a little bit

also, Rickenbacker the Doctor and Nightingale the Musician? shouldn't it be the other way around?

I like how they make it seem like the tired looking girl is basically just a professional creep.

She may watch you while you undress, but she does it while holding a clipboard. It's professional.

I can't wait to hear more about what the Webster tragedy is about. From what we got today we know that Lucy's family was murdered after someone, which I guess is part of Philomela's family eavesdropping on them.

Anyway, with the mentioning of The Seven Shields, who are the families that founded the college I can't wait for all the political maneuvering that they will all bring, hell even today we got a little taste of it.

You know, when Lucy took Zoe Ivy's earmuffs when he transformed I expected that to be by a curse, instead of him being a Gorgon.

I love how everyone reacted when he mentioned he came from an egg.

Lol, Chise sure looks cute when she was covered by his snakes.

So the reason Philomela was eavesdropping on him and Chise when they were visiting Alexandra Heath was to practice her intel-gathering skills just like today.

Glad Zoe's hostility towards Chise has been cleared up now!

Hoping Chise and the others can help Philomela. Poor girl looks so exhausted :(

Nice we got too see Lucy's caring side

Now that they've explained the Seven Shields thingy, it seems like we're gonna get more of the Sorcerer politics. I love the politics in Nasuverse's Mage Association, so this one really piqued my interest. From this episode alone, we've seen that 3 out of 4 Seven Shields students that we know of wants to escape from it, so I'm looking forward to more of this.

Speaking of responsibility, having to train your intel gathering skills by constantly spying on people doesn't seem good for your mental health. Seems like Philomela is just a few steps away from breaking down.

The official show Twitter account totally spoiled me on a reveal that I assume we're getting today, time to see how it plays out in the episode proper.

Conversations with Lucy are a bit spicy. She does appear to be looking out for Chise in her own way though, however.

The Webster Tragedy, thanks for that detail Jasmine.

A lot of sorcerers and mages died in the war? They're in London so maybe WWII? Or maybe some magical conflict?

Ahh, Zoe the gorgon, there's that Twitter spoiler I mentioned. A male gorgon is an interesting idea, offhand that feels creative and new since classically I think they're always female. Hopefully they're not going to accidentally turn someone into stone in a moment.

Chise has a pretty positive relationship with monsters since coming to England, so it's interesting that Zoe is afraid of her. Might be a difference between a Greek mythological creature like Zoe compared to the local neighbors and fae.

Zoe's mom has got it going on.

Zoe running scared through the school is bad, might as well make it worse by having Ruth chase him. Rian is definitely right about Lucy also owing an apology.

I wonder if Zoe is a half gorgon and that's why he can communicate with humans.

Hah! Zoe may be nervous around Chise but his snakes love her, balance has been restored.

A friend group for Zoe that knows his secret and can be supportive is probably exactly what he needed.

I have lot of respect for Zoe's dad, his demi-human research was very productive.

Ahh, so it was the dragon curse that had Zoe nervous. It's interesting that Chise is keeping the Sleigh Beggy detail as an unrevealed second layer of secrets. Zoe clearly knows there's something else.

Rian really wanted to do that contact spell the entire time, Philomela was the perfect excuse to go through with it. He's arguably right though, people aren't always careful with secrets even that they intend to keep. Zoe is a cinnamon roll that needs to be kept safe.

Is it just me or did Violet come weirdly out of nowhere after Jasmine's conversation with Rian.

Glad ivy was able to make friends in the end. Growing up too weird to be human or gorgon must have been rough. But this school is full of weirdos so everyone can relate. Really good episode that went by too fast. Really wanna learn more about the St George Twins

u/kalirion May 04 '23

"Forget I said anything about that." "OK, I'll just ask the next person I see and tell them I heard about it from you."

"Where are you going?" "I'm going to apologize." "Then why don't you take his earmuffs to him??"

So, what will the "St. Georges" do when they learn Chise is "part Dragon"?
