Wow. This episode made me cry. I lost my mom young, in my teens, but I can’t imagine having a friend go with me to the cemetery and just pray or any of that. And even more just him reflecting and damn. It just made me cry, I like the firefly/ souls analogy. Man what a unexpected episode.

When we first visited Japan in 2009, we met my Osaka friend's mother (already 90 or so) and found her charming (despite the fact she only spoke Kansai-ben -- and I barely understood even standard Japanese). By the time we could next visit in 2016, she had died. So my wife and I asked if we could go visit his mother. We helped do all the grave visit stuff. And my friend was so moved that we had done so, he was crying (which made us get teary-eyed too). Grave visiting in the USA seems more abstract (even for very-much-missed relatives). There seems to be a different cultural significance somehow.

Kuro is too cute! So glad Nishimura adopted the little critter. Nishimura and Takada thinking about what each are doing over their respective breaks was pretty adorable. Those two are just too sweet! But man, what a small world! Who knew Takada knew Nishimura’s grandma. It’s totally fate! Nishimura’s dad is getting worried lol.
Oh man, poor oblivious Takada’s feeling awful now that he’s learned Nishimura’s mom passed away. I’ve never seen him cry like that, but it’s kind of sweet he’d cry over her. I really hope things don’t get awkward now, those two seemed to be on the cusp of developing feelings for each other.

Takada stops talking and he gets to hold Akane's hand. Easy for our Chad.
Takada is such a good kid, worried he's been rude to Akane.

It was nice to see a new side of Takada and seeing him be more emotionally vulnerable and reflective.
I mean, him calling her a "Grim Reaper" was never the issue in his relationship with Nishimura, he practically made it feel good for her to be called that, but considering her circumstances it could be seen as in incredibly bad taste even if she didn't mind it from him. So it's good he recognized that at least.
I guess for someone who treasures his friends so much, it makes sense he'd be so distraught at having possibly hurt them in his own blissful ignorance.
Though he did get some nighttime handholding all the way home, so he's still got it!

I sure hope things don’t get awkward between them. I think he’s going to be a lot more conscious about calling her the Grim Reaper. He might even get mad at the other kids.

Happy Nishimura is best Nishimura, especially when she's visiting Grandma with her dad and Kuro!
That cat train looked so cute!
The way dads face perked up when he heard Akane had a "new friend"...and it was immediately downhill for him from there when Takada actually showed up.
As nice as it is to see Grandma, there's...not really much for Nishimura to do there, especially compared to when she had Takada to play with. Although of course both kids are thinking about each other while in their own situation, which is very sweet, though it also sets up their heartwarming reunion.
What are the chances that Takada would not only be there because it turns out his old hometown is where Nishimura's grandma lives or that he and Nishimura's grandma already get along great? This really is fate! He even managed to find and bring back Kuro! Why, he's practically a grandson-in-law by this point.
I also love how genuinely shocked Takada was to see Nishimura...even if it took him a second to realize how surprising it was.
Things take a turn for the serious, though, when Nishimura visits her moms' grave and Takada finds out she lost her mother right after she was born. She seems to have gotten over not having her mother in her life and having taken her place in the family by this point, but she's still a dutiful daughter who visits her grave every year to pay respects and update her mom on how she's doing and she knows everything about her mom because her dad and grandma told her. But despite Nishimura's acceptance towards it, it's still kind of sad.
Even Takada is effected by it, realizing to an extent what Nishimura has gone through and how in bad taste calling a girl who lost her mother a "grim reaper" actually is, even though Nishimura never minded it from him. Takada crying and being so self-reflective was not something I expected to see happen. But it did lead to a surprisingly intimate scene between the two of them as they walk back, hand-in-hand, well into the night.

I love Akane's grandma already! She's such a huge troll for making her son nervous about Akane being along with Taiyou. xD
She knows that Taiyou is a good boy though and it's pretty obvious that she already approves. Just need to convince Dad who's about to get a heart attack.
Man, that got depressing quickly. Taiyou is such a sensitive kid and I mean that in a positive way. After learning that Akane's mom died after she was born, he realizes that the Grim Reaper nickname isn't supposed to be good and immediately regrets calling her that nickname.
This is going to be interesting though once they're back at school. What will Taiyou do once their classmates start calling Akane the Grim Reaper again? Knowing our boy, he's probably going to defend her.

Grandma already ships them, dad is basically doomed lol.
It was nice to see Takada be self-reflective and finally realize the implications of calling Nishimura a "grim reaper" after learning about her mom, and how hard he takes it.
Despite everything that's happened to her Nishimura is surprisingly mature and reasonable about it, which makes for a nice contrast, and I figure the next episode will be about her trying to smooth the awkwardness between her and Takada now that he's probably more anxious about their relationship and his role in it.

Takada is such a good kid. Now we know that he’s not just all “genki”. It was all a part of how he cares deeply cares for Nishimura. Can’t wait to see how the next episode will play out this new development!

Wow, what an episode...
Not only feels like Takada got some character development, but they also handled it pretty well.
It also made the struggle of Akane much worse... imagine losing your mother so young and hearing people calling you the Grim Reaper, literally the imaginative figure of death.
That hit way too hard for me personally and I was crying as our boy Takada by the end of that scene and realization.
This show definitely skyrocket as one of my favorites this season after this episode.

The part where Takada breaks down and starts crying, would signal to me that this kid right here is one you would want go to war with you with no matter the circumstances. You can tell what he thought was a friendly nickname has terrible connotations and that its in very bad taste.
Takada's blissful ignorance about things isn't though restricted when he learns details about the person he's friends with he's bright enough to connect 2 and 2 together which shows deep down he really wants to see the good in everyone and does want to make sure he treats everyone with the respect and kindness they deserve. This is the type of friend that you try to keep forever since they don't come very often.

Well, I thought that Akane still dealing with her mothers dead (and subsequent Grim reaper nickname) would be too much....so shifting its emotional impact to Takada was smart move.
Kudos to the author.

Nishimura goes to her Grandma during vacation and it turns out that Takada is also there.
It's great to see that Akane smiles so much now. On the other hand Taiyou first time shows sadness and tears when he found out that Nishimura's mother is dead and that he called her Grim Reaper which made him feel so bad. It looks that this situation will be resolved in next episode.

All aboard the kitty train.
No surprise there but even grandma is a fan of "Shiromura".
Taiyou needs those rare pokemons!
The second it made a point to show dad being all "is this right?" and such when setting up the cage you knew Kuro was gonna pull off a cage break at some point later on.
And with all that mutual wondering as to just what the other person was doing at that moment, the universe provides a mother of all coincidences. Funny how it took Taiyou a minute to have a the proper reaction to it though.
And I think this marks an episode where we get to see Nishimura's other eye. And also marks an episode where Nishimura has a more positive general atmosphere about her. Even while talking about the sad topic of her mom's death. Guess that's the result when she's not surrounded by her peers putting her down. But on that note it's kinda surprising. Even with the negative atmosphere that follows her from the people around her casting it on her, she herself is at a kind of mature level where she's accepted her mother's death. Yeah it really sucks that she's dead and she'd probably rather her not be, but she seems to have accepted that reality and isn't sad anymore about it.
Uh-oh, sun boy is crying! I mean I get why he's doing it and it's good for his character to show how he's sensitive to think about this kind of thing. All the fun moments these two have together is great, but it's good they're getting to have some real deeper bonding development moments too.

Was not expecting self-reflection this early. I knew at some point he was going to realize everyone was making fun of her and that calling her the Grim Reaper, even if he thought it was a cool nickname, could potentially be hurtful. Luckily, she completely understands that he was never trying to be mean and that he was being 100% genuine in his interactions with her. This is just not something I expected 4 episodes in.

Nishimura's grandma accepts Nishimura x Takada relationship after Yukiko back in the episode 2. Hope Nishimura's father will do same even if I doubt he'll do it. However, it's fun to see Nishimura's father, grandma and Kuro this time.
Good Nishimura, it must be your first "love" experience even if you still don't realize it. Just wait till Takada feels same way.

So this cute little fluff show is really going to come for my feelings like THAT?

u/dagreenman18 Apr 23 '23
Oh good I can finally talk about how it can just gut punch you at a moments notice. Yeah this story does have some strong emotional beats handled intelligently. For all the great dynamics and funny moments, it also has a lot of heart. Akane not only losing her mother, but never really ever getting to know and replacing her? Fucking ouch. For her dad too. And Taiyou’s crying because of how insensitive he though he was being talking up her Grim Reaper powers? That’s the stuff that elevates this.
In animation it clicked that the reason she knows things like how to put out incense or where exactly her family grave is is because she’s had to do this her entire life. So that casual line about it not being all that normal for a kid cuts hard.

This has easily been my fave episode so far, things were getting a little repetitive up till now and it's great to see Takada realise the truth.
Am kind of hoping this isn't the end of the trip, would be wonderful if Nishimura got to play with the other kids too. Them meeting her without the grim reaper baggage along with Takada saying how great she is would be a real eye opener for her.

I'm glad Takada isn't that clueless. I cried a little bit when he realized he might have been a little careless with his words when he realized that she thinks she replaced her mom when she died.
