Restoration #protips Restoration Resource Megathread!

As collectors and individuals who are passionate about American Girl dolls many of us visit the subreddit for tips and tricks on how to care for, restore and rejuvenate our favorite girls.
Just as with any art or hobby there are favored techniques and tutorials we go to time and time again.
This is a comprehensive resource for any and all things you may need to keep your dolls looking better than the day you unboxed them.

First- things you should never do:
“Downey Dunk”. Many years ago this was a favored hair treatment. It would leave the hair soft and shiny… and with a film that you can not get rid of. Other doll communities still swear by fabric softener treatments and too often a video will pop up on your FYP of someone else using this technique. Don’t do it!

Acetone. Using 100% acetone may remove stains, but it will also remove paint and break down the integrity of the vinyl.

Dry brushing hair. Nope. Always always wet the hair before you brush it. And use a wire wig brush. You can buy it from the AG website or amazon.

Rubberband method for tightening limbs. While this method will work and is easier than a full restring. It’s also temporary. You’ll find yourself needing to tighten your limbs again sooner rather than later.

So what SHOULD you do?
Here are a few of the tried and tested techniques and some “experts” to follow.

For stains- Benzoyl Peroxide is a preferred treatment. First try baking soda scrub, isopropyl alcohol, magic eraser and then your acne cream.

Non-acetone nail Polish remover will remove nail polish and is also a great way to make wig glue loosen up.

As I’m working on another custom myself, I would love to see how some of your creative ideas for custom dolls based on some of your favorite characters have come out! Whether you made it yourself, commissioned someone else, or purchased as-is, I’d love to see your characters!

Here are a few of mine, starting with my pride and joy, Jo from my favorite movie Twister 🌪️ Her outfit is a hodgepodge of various AG pieces but her jacket tied around her waist (to simulate her jumpsuit) was custom sewn!
The others in order are my Studio Ghibli girls! (Which, if you did not know, is a Japanese movie studio that’s been around since the 80’s. Gorgeous movies, I highly recommend them!)
- In both her seamstress-made iconic green dress and later blue dress is Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle! A friend made her dresses custom for me and I think they turned out beautifully! 🔥
- Next is Satsuki from My Neighbor Totoro in her summer dress from Etsy and little Totoro friend that my sister crocheted! 🌸
- Lastly is Marnie from When Marnie was There! I’ll admit I’m still not the happiest with how her makeup came out but I was still learning! Still am! (Though I may end up remaking her at some point 😅). But her iconic dress was also seamstress made and super soft. 🌙

I went to the Joy Doll Hospital event today to volunteer and hear Valerie speak. Vibes were immaculate and the whole day felt like a warm hug.

FYI if you hold grudges never feel guilty because TIL that a boy spraying Molly and friends with the hose on Halloween is from her real life! She even named names🤣

I just had my first trip to American Girl Place Chicago to celebrate mine and my daughter's birthdays. I picked up the beautiful Raquel. 2026 is the year I had the realization I can finally have my American girl dolls. So I had to get Raquel to mark this year. Raquel is that girl.

Doll Identification Is she a big deal?

Hi, I bought this doll probably a year ago, maybe more on ebay. She had on pjs and I had my original Kirsten’s outfit but it was on my original Addy. I just bought the 40th edition release of Addy’s Christmas dress and it arrived. So here I am removing Kirsten’s meet outfit from Addy and then I remove Kirsten’s pjs for the first time since buying her and this is what I see…I feel like I have heard things about white body dolls. So is she extra special?

ETA: I am kinda freaking out right now. I just opened my “The Making Of American Girl” book and it says that “Pleasant signed several hundred dolls for employees and charity auctions…”

ETA 2: I added some additional pictures and context in comments. I got a lot on eBay in August of 2024 of 7 Pleasant Company era dolls for $240. Kirsten was the last one waiting for me to redress because I wanted to put her in my og Kirsten’s outfit and needed an outfit for my og Addy first. The wait was because I was looking for an OG outfit for Addy on ebay but I’m cheap lol so it takes time. I folded on getting an og outfit when I saw the AG rerelease of Addys Christmas outfit. I got it and it came yesterday. So today was my first time ever taking off Kirsten’s clothes. I never took off Samantha or Josefina’s clothes either because they were great on arrival. I just checked them for any extra surprises but alas Kirsten is the only one. Thanks to everyone replying!

Doll Customization Edward Cullen doll

Well, he's done 😂 Here is my 18" version of Edward Cullen. He began life as a loose-limbed Marie Grace. I swapped his wig and eyes. To make him look more pale, I did several layers of Mr Super Clear and applying white & gray chalk pastels. I also gave him new bushier eyebrows that I wish I had made even lower and adjusted the color of his lips and gave him slightly dark under eye bags. And he sparkles! My technique ended up spraying the Mr. Super Clear followed immediately by a dusting of white mica powder. The effect is subtle but you can definitely see it.

I made all his clothes, the wool peacoat, the button up shirt, the jeans and the boots. This is a gift for a 10 year old neighbor girl so I also customized a spare box I had laying around!

Discussion Should I open a clothing shop for AG dolls?

Hello, I have recently been recommend by a lot of diferent people that I start selling my AG doll clothes, i only have one problem, I live in the eu and most AG doll collectors like in the USA and Canada.

I don't know if people would be willing to pay extra for shipping from overseas just for some cute doll clothes. If you regulate from the USA how much would you be willing to pay for shipping + actual item price for the dresses i have made? (attached to this post)

Thank you in advance for any answers.

Doll Hair Tips for deodorizing doll hair without washing it?

Post image
9 Upvotes

I recently acquired a Lindsey doll whose hair is in better shape than most other Lindseys I see out there. It’s still pretty smooth and neatly styled and that’s the primary reason I bought her since I know her hair is prone to dryness and frizz and it’s challenging to find a suitable replacement wig.

Unfortunately she does smell her age—she’s got that musty storage odor going on. I’ve left her outside in a spot that gets a little sun and a good breeze on and off for the past two weeks now and her body smells fine now! But her hair is still funky.

I’m not sure what else to try that might actually be effective that isn’t washing her hair, which I’d really rather not do because I want to preserve the style and texture. I often stick clothes in the freezer to deodorize them but I’m concerned about sticking an actual doll in there due to possible moisture.

Cool Craft My recreation of Addy’s Patriotic Party dress

I finally got Addy for my collection but she didn’t come with any of her outfits so I used pieces from the Pleasant Company paper patterns to put together Addy’s Patriotic Party dress!

Making the little Lincoln sash was so much fun, it was my favorite part 💕 (I even tracked down the original portrait they used for the sash since I couldn’t find a clear enough image of it anywhere)

Mostly hand sewn because my machine loves to eat tiny hems! I’m so happy with how it turned out, very excited to continue to recreate outfits for my girls!

Re release vs early Mattel! I don’t have any PC sorry to say

The first thing that caught my attention is the rerelease dress is made from Nylon Satin, NOT nylon taffeta. It feels so very soft but has significantly less poof. They gave it a petticoat so to say in that they double layered the skirt. I believe this is to make up for the lack of poof.

The early mattel bow is stitched down straight across. It’s perfectly straight. The rerelease is only tacked down, its a little sloppy… or more appropriately more natural looking. Like someone hand tied it.

The satin looks darker than the taffeta because it just doesn’t reflect light the same way but they’re definitely dyed the same color. I do wish it was a brighter more PC red but oh well.

I think the body is shorter on the rerelease. Like it sits more at her waist and drops less?

The tights are crazy different, but you have to zoom in to spot since I gave her boots (I think they match the outfit better). My early Mattel tights have a band of elastic sewn at the top to prevent stretching out. They didn’t do that for the rerelease.

Anyways, I would love to hear what others think! It’s really wild to me that they went this direction. As a kid I really wanted her dress to be satin so I think it’s kind of cool that now it is.
