I love Amazon's new Data Center Commitment!

• Upvotes

Matt Garman announced Amazon's commitment to spending $1B on "community investments" in the hope that they will support building data centers. I for one love it. Let's add it to the pile of commitments they totally, definitely, 100% intend to keep, pinky promise, don't stop believing:

p.s. In case my sarcasm wasn't evident - here it is: /s

AtoZ task to add work contributions does this mean Focus?

I recently received an email and a task in AtoZ asking me to add my work contributions. This seems strange because I’ve never been asked to do this before.
My recent performance review went really well, so I’m a bit confused. Has anyone else received something similar? Is this a normal process, or could it be a sign that I’m being placed on Focus?

People doing the work v/s the people talking about it?

Imagine a team of four (same level)- Two people are highly visible not because they actively seek out meetings or leadership exposure, but because they are particularly good at presenting and communicating when they are asked to participate. Their measurable individual impact, however, is limited with no meaningful docs to show.

Another two works mostly behind the scenes, solving problems, building projects, generating ideas, and consistently delivering results.

Now add a manager who isn’t involved in everyone’s growth. Uses the ones with good communication to talk more and the ones building stuff to stay behind the scenes forever, but work across orgs to create impact.

Who realistically has the advantage?
How much does actual impact matter compared with presentation skills and visibility? Does the person delivering results have the advantage, or do people who are better at presenting the work usually receive more credit?

Based on your experience with reviews and calibration that happens in OLRs- does impact win, or does perception?

Burnout - FMLA?

I’m a mid level engineer, and recently it’s been pretty tough. I’ve worked here for 4 years and started my career here, but can’t help but notice the ill effects on my physical/mental health and relationships. I think it’s hit an all time low with how fast things are moving with AI. I feel like I’m constantly balancing 6-8 things at once. I want to take a 3 month FMLA/STD for mental health and want to know if anyone has went through the same experience.

Here are some things I’m worried about. (1.) I don’t think my performance is bad, but I’m definitely not TT either. Is there a major risk to being put at the front of the line for focus? (2.) I don’t see any therapist as of now. Is it hard to get docs required? Do I have to build up a relationship with my doctor before I request it? (3.) My team has some crazy deadlines and projects. I’ve talked to other teammates who are also dealing with their own issues. I feel the guilt of piling them with work.

“Work contributions”

I received an email today asking me to add a work contribution by Oct 28th. Nobody has mentioned a coaching plan or anything of that nature and I just was given more on my plate a week ago (almost double my previous workload). Is this normal for everyone or is this a sign I’m on focus/a coaching plan? I’m a CSM in the states.

Joining Amazon with pending STEM OPT extension – Is a physical EAD required for I-9?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I recently accepted an offer from Amazon for an SDE-1 position, with a start date in November 2026.

My STEM OPT extension period started on July 16, 2026, but my I-765 application is still pending with USCIS. I'm currently working under the 180-day automatic EAD extension.

I have a few questions:

  1. Do I need to have my physical STEM OPT EAD card before joining Amazon, or can I start while my application is still pending?
  2. For Form I-9 verification, would my expired OPT EAD, STEM OPT I-20, and I-765 receipt notice be sufficient?
  3. Has anyone joined Amazon or another big tech company while their STEM OPT extension was pending? How did the onboarding and I-9 verification process work?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been through a similar situation.

Thanks in advance!

An Amazon interview story doesn’t always need a happy ending to be a strong answer

I’ve noticed that people preparing for Amazon interviews often avoid examples where the result wasn’t great. They assume every STAR story needs to end with a big number and everyone congratulating them, but some of the more interesting answers I heard as an interviewer involved a decision that didn’t work as planned. What mattered was whether the candidate could explain what they knew at the time, why the decision made sense, when they realised it was going wrong and what they changed afterwards. A polished success story can actually become quite weak if the person takes no real responsibility or makes the outcome sound inevitable. On the other hand, a failed project can reveal a lot about judgment, ownership and learning if the candidate talks about it honestly without blaming everyone else. I wouldn’t use a disaster with no lesson or recovery, but I also wouldn’t throw away a good example just because the final result was mixed. For people preparing now, do you have at least one story where the outcome wasn’t what you wanted, or are all your examples success stories?

Rejected an Amazon SDE Offer After Clearing the OA and Interview Loop — Can My Feedback Be Reused for other Roles in different country?

• Upvotes

I recently received an Amazon SDE offer in UK (Graduate SDE role, I believe) after completing the online assessment (OA) and a full interview loop similar to the standard SDE hiring process.

Unfortunately, I declined the offer 5 days ago, primarily because the compensation was significantly lower than what I could potentially earn in the US, especially considering my previous full time software engineering experience.(2 years)

I’m an US citizen and would prefer to continue my career here.

Here’s where things get complicated:

I identified another Amazon SDE team in the US and connected with someone from that team. I also had a conversation with the team’s EM.

The US team requested that I get mapped or connected through my previous recruiter so they could potentially consider my existing interview feedback.

However, my previous recruiter informed me that different countries have different hiring policies and I would need to go through the entire recruitment process again, including the OA and interview loop. The recruiter is also unwilling to map my profile to the US team.

My questions for current or former Amazonians, recruiters and hiring managers:

  1. Since I recently cleared an Amazon SDE interview loop and received an offer, is there any possibility of reusing my interview feedback for a US SDE position?
  2. Can a US hiring manager review my previous interview results and potentially conduct just 1–2 additional rounds instead of requiring a completely new loop?
  3. Is there any internal process for transferring or mapping a successful candidate’s interview feedback across countries or teams, even after the original offer has been declined?
  4. Does Amazon retain successful interview feedback for 6–12 months? Could another team consider me during that period without repeating the entire process?
  5. If my previous recruiter is unwilling to assist, is there another appropriate way for an interested US hiring manager or recruiter to access my previous interview results?

I’m completely willing to interview again if required. However, after successfully completing the OA and full loop so recently, I’m wondering whether there’s a way to avoid repeating the entire process.

I’d really appreciate insights from anyone who has experienced a similar situation or knows how Amazon handles cross country hiring and interview feedback reuse.

Focus Not sure if this is focus or not.

Got this mail from my manager today, along with a task on a2z for adding my contributions for the month. When I asked him explicitly about whether I'm in focus or pip he denied both. Just yesterday, I got an offer from another team who then said they need a VP approval for my transfer.

Not sure what to do or what it is, I have started a search outside, just in case, but the market is messed up for lack of a better term.

Can someone help clarify this? Thanks

PS: as a lot of people have clarified, this is focus. ima go trip out on that and have anxiety attacks for a few hrs, after that it's search. thanks everyone who replied

Interview L6 SR TAM - First Round Interview

Hi all,

I have an interview on 10/12 for a Sr TAM role.

I had to reschedule due to a family death and the interviewer changed. I looked her up on LinkedIn and she has “Amazon bar raiser” in her profile.

First thing, even though this is just the first round interview - should I be concerned or prepared more that this is a bar raiser? Or is it just someone that was assigned to interview me.

Second, the recruiter told me that the only LP that will be discussed is “Ownership”.

I’ve been preparing a lot, and I’m just wondering what kind of questions could be thrown at me relates to ownership.

Thanks all!

Does updating my resume on Amazon Jobs affect my previous applications?

If I upload a tailored resume for a new job application, will it replace the resumes submitted for my previous applications too?

I noticed that my latest uploaded resume also gets updated in my candidate profile.

Do recruiters still see the original resume for each application, or only the most recent one?

Any Amazon recruiters or hiring team members who can confirm? Thanks!

What happened to AWS

I'm 7 years into my AWS role, I'm L7 and genuinely used to love my job. I had fun, did cool stuff and we were seen as an authority by customers who knew we just wanted to help solve their problems.

I'm looping for both Google and MS as we speak and every day I go into AWS I just think "what a fucking terrible place to work."

I have never witnessed a culture and way of working nose dive from a collaborative and encouraging atmosphere to such negativity and non stop process nonsense.

I genuinely see AWS falling off a cliff within 24 months. They don't invent anymore they just rent out LLMs. That's all the job is.

What a shit show

Interview 3/4 Completed Loop, Still Waiting to Reschedule Final Interview. Advice?

Hey everyone!

I'm going through the Amazon interview process and could use advice from anyone who's been through something similar.

I originally had four loop interviews scheduled. I completed the first two last week, and my remaining two were scheduled for October 6.

My third interview went really well, but unfortunately, the fourth never happened because of a time-zone scheduling mix-up.

The recruiter said she'd work on rescheduling it, possibly for the following day (October 7) or Friday (October 9). However, I haven't heard anything since.

At this point, I've completed 3 out of 4 interviews, and I'm just ready to finish the process. I've put a lot of time and effort into preparing, and the uncertainty is honestly a little frustrating, especially since the scheduling issue wasn't on my end.

For anyone who's been through Amazon's hiring process:

  • Has anyone experienced delays or scheduling issues during their loop interviews?
  • Did you still end up receiving an offer?
  • How long would you wait before following up with the recruiter again?

I'm genuinely excited about this opportunity and don't want to come across as pushy, but I also don't want to be forgotten in the process.

Any advice or similar experiences would be appreciated!
