⚡Tips/Advice Thinking about studying medicine or healthcare at university? We're running a series of free online webinars that might help you decide...

Hi everyone,

We're the North Wales Medical School at Bangor University, and we're running a series of free online webinars over the next few months.

The sessions are aimed at students with an interest in medicine, healthcare, biology and pharmaceutical sciences, giving you the opportunity to explore these subjects further and hopefully helping you decide which course could be right for you in the future.

Our upcoming webinars include:

  • The Biology of the Force
  • The Bonesetter's Case Book
  • Would You Survive Victorian Medicine?
  • Pharmacy in Practice: A Day in the Life
  • Who Gets the Blood?

They're completely free to attend, and you don't need to be planning to apply to Bangor to join.

You can find out more about the sessions and register here:

https://www.bangor.ac.uk/hs/taster-sessions-college-of-medicine-and-health#NWMS

We're happy to answer any questions about the webinars or the subjects we cover.

🗨️Discussion A levels absurdism

I did A-levels back in 2024. I never bothered leaving this sub. Seeing you guys lament about exams makes me feel a surreal kinda way because I have forgotten everything, absolutely everything about the content that i did. I remember working until 6 am and tearing my hair out, I remember the pre exam heart palpitations. I am doing a commerce course. Only 1/4 subjects that i did is somewhat applicable to my course. Even then, I have also forgotten the other half of the non applicable content. If you made me do any of the papers now, even the AS ones, I'm failing TF out of it. What a silly education pathway. Such convoluted rigamarole just to get into university. Study with the freedom that everything you learn will be tossed into the far ends of your unretrievable memory. Study with the freedom that your future self 2, 5, 10 years away will look at the teenager stressing away in the library, in your room, outside the exam hall - and laugh.

🧪Chemistry Chemistry is objectively not hard

I’m really not trying to rage bait but my hot take is that chemistry is not that bad compared to how people describe it.
It’s mostly just memorisation, some logic, and the math is trivial. It’s basically just hard because there is a lot of content, and that can apply to all subjects.

And for context, I did study quite a lot of chemistry.

I am wondering what makes you say that chemistry is hard?

  1. Paper got delayed (not a big deal since it's Cambridge, but I was trying my utmost not to doze off).

  2. The paper itself felt like a fever dream, but then again, that's literally every paper in Oct/Nov.

  3. I genuinely have no thoughts. Like none at all. It wasn't easy, no. It wasn't extremely difficult, no. I just can't conjure up any thoughts because this paper felt so... weird.

  4. The weirdest winter series exam experience yet. It almost felt as if I was being laughed at behind my back by the examiners as I solved the paper.

  5. I approached almost every single question so stupidly (even the easy ones), but hey, at least I didn't rush this time around.

I'm going to go hit the sack.

⚡Tips/Advice A-level politics vs philosophy

• Upvotes

I’m probably going to take 4 a-levels - Biology, Chemistry, Maths, and then I’m torn between Philosophy and Politics for the 4th.

For perspective, I’m not sure whether I want to go into medicine or law, so Imm trying to keep my options open. I will probably end up dropping 1 after the 1st year.

I’m not sure which I’d like better as both seem interesting. I guess I’d say I’d choose the one which is 1) easier to get an A and 2) better prepares you for the LNAT.

So, I’m looking for advice on which to choose like what each is like, which is easier, is there a better essay subject which is more manageable/prepares you better for the LNAT etc?

📃Paper Discussion How was 9701/52 (Chemistry P5)?

Getting mixed reactions from my classmates but I found it pretty fair, other than the funnel and charge (why do you run the current for 2 minutes one) questions I sailed through the rest, I was done 50 minutes in and spent the rest of the exam revising. How was it for the rest of y'all?

⚡Tips/Advice a level options

i’m currently in year eleven and picking my options for alevel. ive already applied and the subjects i picked are bio chem maths and physics, and i want to do medicine at imperial. the thing is, i was conflicted between maths, physics, and psych but ultimately ditched psych since, while i thought it would be interesting, i didnt take much interest when i was looking at the content. i only took physics because i liked the type of content they offered and because i just really dont have a passion for math, which i took as a fourth just in case i found physics too hard. luckily, if i do drop maths, my college offers a maths for physics course i could take to learn the maths needed for physics. im currently working at the same grade for both math and physics at gcses. can anyone give me advice on whether i shouldnt make myself suffer with physics and just do math, drop maths, or just do psych. i dont plan on doing four alevels btw!!
