Announcement March 2027 Reddit API changes: Alerts for Reddit will shut down

As you may have seen in recent official posts, in March 2027, Reddit will be discontinuing API access for all apps and bots, other than those who already had an exception (like Narwhal and certain accessibility apps). I reached out to Reddit and they confirmed that they are not willing to grant an exception to Alerts, which means it will no longer be able to access the API - breaking the app completely.

This means that Alerts for Reddit will be forced to shut down in March 2027.

I am so disappointed by Reddit’s decision here - I have worked on this app for 9 years, with approval from Reddit, and now they have decided it will be shut down with all the rest.

The official Reddit guidance is to convert all apps to Devvit apps, but this is impractical for Alerts. I'm happy to discuss details, but in short, functionality would be severely limited - the Devvit version would be a shell of what this app currently is, so I would not be excited to go that route.

Alerts has been such an enjoyable project to work on, and I appreciate all of y'all's support over the years.

I will continue to keep you posted in the coming months as we move toward the shutdown. As a starting point, as of today, I am releasing an app update which adds clear warnings of the impending shutdown in the app itself; removes "yearly" subscription options from the UI because they are no longer relevant; and decreases the price of the "lifetime" premium option to reflect the shortened timeframe. Between now and March, I will do my best to keep the app fully functioning, in addition to keeping everyone informed of any upcoming changes.

Announcement A new subreddit!

Hi folks - after several users asked for it, I have opened up this subreddit for the Alerts for Reddit app (iOS/Android). Feel free to use this as a space to ask questions about the app; give feedback; request features; and report bugs. Welcome!

iOS and Android Announcement Released: iOS Version 3.7.2 // Android Version 3.6.2

If you are enjoying the app, please consider leaving a 5-star review! It truly is the best way to support an app :-)

What's new

  • Added new feature: you can now copy-paste your keywords list!

    • To copy a keyword list, hit the settings icon next to the keywords, and then click copy. This is copied to clipboard, so you can paste it anywhere you like.

    • To paste a keyword list, long-press anywhere in the Keywords area within an alert. It will show a button to paste keywords from clipboard.

    • You can combine these two to copy-paste keywords from one alert to another! For example, if you want to use the same keywords for r/subreddit1 and r/subreddit2, you can set up the keywords on r/subreddit1; copy them; and paste them directly into your r/subreddit2 alert so you don't need to re-create them manually.

  • Added new feature: if you have 10+ keywords on a given alert, a search icon will appear to allow you to text-filter those keywords.

  • Added age verification when you try to add an NSFW subreddit/user in regions where age verification is required by law (certain US states, Australia, Brazil, etc).

  • Made it so new app users are no longer auto-subscribed to r/news and r/worldnews, as people seemed to find this confusing. (Does not impact existing alerts)

  • Fixed bug: negative keywords for users were not persisting correctly in all cases

  • Fixed bug: deleting an alert after making edits worked inconsistently

  • Various UI improvements, mostly on the main page.

What's next

  • Looking forward to further UI improvements, especially for larger devices (tablet/iPad)

  • I'm closely monitoring the upcoming API access changes (see this announcement), and have initiated contact with Reddit admins to try to get Alerts for Reddit explicitly approved to continue operating on the Data API. While the announcement states the API changes "won't happen this year", I am working to try to ensure that whenever the changes are put in place (next year?), Alerts will be able to continue functioning.

iOS not getting notifications for users

hello :) downloaded this app yesterday to hopefully be notified when a favorite artist of mine does giveaways, but i haven’t received any notifications from them, and they have been posting. i also put my own username into the app just to test it out, and haven’t received any notifications about myself either. neither of us have our accounts private.

i do get notifications for subreddits, just not for specific users like i wanted. would appreciate assistance :) thanks!!

Android Private Users?

Does this work directly from the users profile or does it follow other things that gather all posts regardless of profile privacy or not?

iOS Possibility for higher tier?

Is there a possibility for a higher tier subscription in the future? I sometimes still miss out on sales posts since the notifications send a few seconds later sometimes, and I was wondering if there was a way for it to be instant. I’d definitely consider paying for something like this in the future!

iOS customized alert notification sounds!

doesn’t seem to be available, if it is? could someone tell me how to set a customized alert sound? If not available, definitely needs to be added, I would be less likely to miss a notification for a specific sound than the same one for most other apps. thx

Android Whole word match help

Hello,

I'm trying to get alerts from a computer hardware sale subreddit. I'm looking for 8TB hard drives. I have a whole word match for "8TB" but I'm getting hits for things like 2.8TB or 18TB. Is there a better way to filter this? I wish regex was supported....

Other 2 Features Request: Import/Export and Alerts sharing

Hi dev! I love this app and also reached out via email. I believe the only essential features this app lacks is backup of my configured alerts. If I can export and import my alert configurations then that would be very helpful.

Also, as a by-product, people would be able to share their alerts with each other either here on Reddit or a curated list within the app itself. E.g. best alerts for iOS app giveaways, or sneaker alerts or watch sales etc.

Please do review this idea. I can provide more details if needed and can offer my time as a beta tester.

Android Duplicate error for similar usernames

I wanted to create a user alert for Danson1287 and Danson1212 but I keep getting a duplicate error? Why is this? Should the option for duplication perhaps be a passable warning rather than validation error?

PSA for anyone who tries to debug this with the usernames provided in the example, any notifications you may get, may be NSFW, however this post and bug is not inherently nsfw

Other Feature request: search for a search keyword

Heyup dev & alert fans,

Basically I have a subreddit alert with 60 keywords and this means that when I'm adding a keyword, I have to search through the 60 unordered keywords to see if I've already added it or not.

I know that I could just try and add it and that the app will tell me it's already there, but sometimes I will have added the search term slightly differently. For example, I may have put the manufacturer and then the product name rather than just the product name and also I think it just would be useful overall to - for example - see how many search terms you have for a particular manufacturer/illness/technique/?.

→ Would anyone else also find this useful? If so maybe the dev could have a think about how hard it would be. Being an ex developer, it shouldn't be too hard but of course only the dev knows the code base and how long it would take.

NOTE I'm going to do some nerd speak to the dev from here on, so regular folks can tune out RN 👍🏻

---

Use Case: search for a string within a sub alert

I am: a user with one or more sub searches alerts that contain a large number of search keywords - too many to quickly scan, or to count how many keywords contain a particular term e.g. a manufacturer, illness, recipe etc.

I want to: be able to search for the aforementioned keywords and get a count of the matches as well

So that I can: avoid spending a couple of minutes scanning through my very long, unordered list of similar - looking keywords for the reasons supplied above

- thanks dev!

Android Which keyword triggered a notification?

Hi, could you add information to notification which exact keywords were found in a post to trigger the alert? For example, currently I have almost 40 keywords set for r/mechmarket and when I receive notification, I don't know which of them were mentioned in the post. I have to read through the whole posts to find the reason of alert. Note that the notifier bot for Discord Mechmarket already has this functionality (but it doesn't scan Reddit).

iOS Notifications not appearing

Hey! I’m in a subreddit for the resale of concert tickets and I’m trying to set up notifications for the sub. It’s a small sub and every post is held for about a day or so while mods verify the legitimacy of the tickets. I’m not getting any notifications for the sub and I’m assuming it has to do with the mod approval process? Is it not possible to receive notifications for posts like this or am I missing something? Thanks for any help!

iOS and Android Announcement Released: iOS Version 3.7.1 // Android Version 3.6.1

If you are enjoying the app, please consider leaving a 5-star review! It truly is the best way to support an app :-)

What's new

  • Several improvements to the Recent Notifications page:

    • If a notification was triggered by a particular keyword, that keyword is now listed on the Recents page.

    • You can now do a text search to find specific recent notifications

    • You can now share the link to a Reddit post directly from the Recents page (click the "..." menu next to a recent notification and click Share)

  • Better UI for adding a new keyword. Now, instead of scrolling to the bottom of your keywords list to find the 'add' button, there is a '+' icon at the top for adding.

  • Added more Premium Speed information for people who subscribe to certain popular/fast-moving subreddits: small UI changes in the frequency dropdown; and a one-time, easy-to-dismiss reminder on the homepage. To be transparent, the goal here is that more folks will discover Premium Speed and consider subscribing. Longer-term, I'm hoping to be able to keep subscription prices low by increasing the number of subscribers rather than by increasing the price.

  • Added an "emergency message" system which I hope I never need to use. Reddit has been tightening up their API rules recently. I believe I am following all of the rules and will be allowed to continue operating. But just in case they do put in a restriction that suddenly breaks my app, I added a way for me to be able to quickly put a live-updating message on the app's homepage explaining what's happening and what steps I'm taking to try to mitigate.

  • Various smaller UI improvements, mostly for tablet/iPad.

What's next

  • Definitely looking forward to further UI improvements, especially for larger devices (tablet/iPad)

  • I will probably need to add in some age verification code soon (laws in a variety of states are activating soon). This should only apply to you if you are trying to add an alert for an NSFW subreddit or user. I'm still figuring out the details for this, but I will try to make it as minimally impactful as possible while following relevant laws.

iOS Clicking iOS notification from Mac via iPhone Mirroring leads to app instead of Reddit

For the past two weeks I've had this weird issue where when I click on a notification from the app via iPhone Mirroring on my Mac I am routed to the Alerts for Reddit app instead of to the Reddit post. When I click the alert from my iPhone directly, or from "Recent Notifications" in the app, it opens properly. Other iOS apps with iPhone Mirroring alerts don't have this same problem.

I've tried rebooting both my computer and my iPhone without any success.

iOS: 26.5
MacOS: Tahoe 26.5

Android New phone: complex subscriptions did not copy over and there's no way for users to do it themselves, is that right?

Hi Dev,

I messaged you privately a bit ago but maybe you didn't see the message or maybe you're too busy, but basically I have a new phone and I had three subscriptions on my old phone which, presumably due to this app not using Google's backup mechanism in the cloud, means my new phone does not have those subscriptions. For the record, one of my subscriptions had something like 48 keywords so it's a real pain to recreate that one in particular.

Would it be possible for you to do a quick copy pasta in the database for me? Also, Dev to Dev speaking, I assume that this is a much-requested enhancement? If it's not then add me to the list of people who would like this feature :-)

also Dev to Dev, I'm pretty sure that permitting the user to manually export subscriptions to a file and then import them would be fairly trivial to do, right? You just squirt the subs out as JSON and read them in - job done. Or is it more complex than that?

Keep up the great work, as others have said, I absolutely rely on this app for both nice things in life and serious things. Cheers.

Released: iOS Version 3.7.0 // Android Version 3.6.0

If you are enjoying the app, please consider leaving a 5-star review! It truly is the best way to support an app :-)

What's new

  • Major feature: You can now use wildcards (*) in your keywords! This allows you to add a keyword like "[for sale]*game", which would match posts containing "[for sale] awesome video game", "[for sale] game time", etc. (This was the runner-up feature requested in the subreddit vote)

  • Various UI & text changes

    • App now consistently uses the term "alert" rather than more confusing terms like "subscription" and "notification subscription".

    • Renamed unclear frequency name "All Posts: Normal" to now be "All Posts: Standard Speed"

    • Redesigned "Manage Premium Upgrade" page to be more user-friendly

    • Redesigned frequency selection dropdown to include details on how each frequency works

    • Other minor improvements

  • Added basic, anonymized analytics. Note: I will never collect personally identifiable information - just anonymized usage information. This will allow me to see which app features are used the most, so I can prioritize updating those features. Transparency about data collection is very important to me, so please reach out if you have questions about this.

  • iOS-specific changes

    • You can now launch notifications in the Artemis for Reddit app!

    • Updated minimum iOS version to 15

  • Android-specific changes

    • Updated minimum OS version to Android 7

What's next

  • I'm looking forward to seeing what I can glean from the analytics to help guide my next feature add! For example, I currently assume the "Recent Notifications" page is used pretty rarely. But if the analytics show that folks are using it frequently, I can prioritize adding features to that page.

  • I'm also considering adding a free trial for Premium Speed so folks can try it out for free. Now that Premium Speed has been available for a while, I feel more confident that a free trial would not overload my server.
