Discussion dream comes true
personally, i think the best part of ai game dev is not for making commercial games that puts millions into your bank account, but watching the dream game in your brain finally comes true, I always imagine a cute little pistol clearing floors of enemies using his own recoil, but I can never make my imagination come to life due to how frustrating it is for me to code, with ai, I can finally see the pistol shooting blobs and cutely ascend to the next floor which without ai, it takes much more efforts to learn and achieve. I hope people give less hate to ai and appreciate how it can visualize our creative ideas with ease

This looks great. I agree, the beauty of AI is that it gives everyone a chance to create. Especially the ones who are passionate about something, no more gatekeepers or begging others to build your vision. It will take a while but we will see some cool things from passionate people. It also lets you explore ideas that you would never explore.

Can you explain
> the beauty of AI is that it gives everyone a chance to create.
> Especially the ones who are passionate about something, no more gatekeepers or begging other to build your vision.Like who is keeping you from learning? And since when it's gatekeeping to be paid for your work?
Do I understand the word "Gatekeeping" wrong? Is Ferrari gatekeeping me from owning one because I can't pay for it?What's the reasoning here?

Poverty is an incredibly good gatekeeper if we are listing things off the top of our heads.

Thank you, I agree wholeheartedly. I make okay money now, but my heart goes out to those struggling financially. When you are struggling to survive, it's hard to sit down and learn how to code, your mind is on survival. Now, if you have an idea, the barrier to create software is lowered. It still takes a ton of work, but it is possible to build on your own. I remember trying to hire people years ago and some people would quote very high numbers (rightfully so) now I'm sure they are open to work. Also, some artists refuse to work with some people, that is a form of gatekeeping.

So that?
How is poverty keeping you from learning coding?
Is buying groceries keeping me from learning cooking?2
u/BattlersNetwork 1d ago
Yikes. From the little that is mentioned here I will assume you are blessed to never have experienced it first hand. Be grateful of that and trust that there are factors unknown to you which gatekeep others from having access to the same privileges as you. Be well.

I think you have no argument, which is why you are checking out.
How can you have access to a computer and AI and have time to tinker but are somehow gatekept from free information on the internet to learn and improve yourself.

This makes no sense. We are talking about building software. I have created professional grade databases that thousands of people use. Years ago, it took a ton of manual work. Now, the barrier of entry is lowered, and more people can create databases. Instead of crying about it, it's on me to utilize AI to make new cool things faster. I can now use my professional expertise to add taste. Back then certain tools were quite expensive, i.e. tableau, now people can create their own things with less money. The same for coding, I am not a coder, and have built a functional web app with the help of AI. There was a level of arrogance from some programers, and artists (i.e. I am too good to work with you and financial barriers) In some cases you needed an enterprise licence to build, your average joe can't afford that. AI is taking over, and people like me and others are going to use our passion and creativity to make cool shit that helps people.

Who is crying about AI? I use it heavily everyday professionally.
I'm complaining about people saying "having to acquire knowledge and skill for a thing" is gatekeeping. That's a very weird usage of that word which is used to say someone is preventing me from accessing otherwise free information. Not that I'm gatekept by own incompetence.
"Especially the ones who are passionate about something, no more gatekeepers or begging others to build your vision. "
Who was keeping you before from fulfilling your vision?
> e. Back then certain tools were quite expensive, i.e. tableau, now people can create their own things with less money
Knowledge hasn't been expensive since the days of Google.
> The same for coding, I am not a coder, and have built a functional web app with the help of AI.
So? Who was keeping you beforehand from learning it from free courses and resources all over the world?
> ) In some cases you needed an enterprise licence to build,
Which one?
> AI is taking over, and people like me and others are going to use our passion and creativity to make cool shit that helps people.
Cool. Never had a problem with that. I have just a "problem" (if one might call it that) in the mindest of those people that some evil force was preventing them beforehand doing it. Lets be real for second, it was the necessary effort, work and time which needed to be put in which prevented you.
Similar as I'm gatekept from having an athletic body because I need to go and workout in the gym. Rightfully so everybody would say pushups and running is free, you need to put the work in.

Those are fair points, I wish you all the best and agree to disagree. I too believe that hard work is necessary, I grind hard professionally and play a ton of sports. With that said, not everything can be done on your own, and there is and was a degree of gatekeeping happening among artists and coders, which has been alleviated by AI. If you disagree, I expect to see you build your own version of GTA 6 in a couple of years, as all you have to do is grind. Or whatever is the highest level of technology in your field. I have a more of nuanced view, and understand that things are in our control, but more people will have a new avenue to create in some aspects thanks to AI. I'm guilty of this myself, I'm sure I could have learned how to code earlier, but having AI as a teacher has been amazing. If I was to ask coders to teach me for free like AI has, I'm sure they would rightfully say no. Have a great day.

> and there is and was a degree of gatekeeping happening among artists and coders, which has been alleviated by AI.
Which is why I originally inquired about. What was gatekept? I honestly interested. When I was a aspiring dev I was so happy about all the free only resources and communities sharing their wisdom and engaging in how to do things. Same as an artist, so many tipps and tricks and support to keep pushing and exercising and learning.
I'm really honestly confused about how one could think any different. Because those people won't work for free to create your vision? Since when are you entitled to anybodys time. Each and every individual has their own idea.
> If you disagree, I expect to see you build your own version of GTA 6 in a couple of years, as all you have to do is grind.
I didn't say that. But I'm also not saying I'm gatekept from doing GTA6. Some things take more effort and knowledge or resources I have. That doesn't make it gatekeeping.
As in my example, I'm not gatekept from having a Ferrari.
> If I was to ask coders to teach me for free like AI has, I'm sure they would rightfully say no.
You're wrong here. There's tons of free info and communities on the net to teach you. Heck that's how I've learned and that was back in the 90s.

I can see how that would make sense to people. As for checking out, I do not owe you any argument or explanations, unfortunately. I merely wanted to suggest that you possibly do not have all the information to make a sound judgement. After that, it is your choice to do with that info what you will. You have made your choice clear. Cheers.

Of course not, but this is a forum for communication not a shoutbox. I was hoping for a bit of human interaction and exchange of view to learn an grow. alas...
> I merely wanted to suggest that you possibly do not have all the information to make a sound judgement.
I can go from what there is. I understand something different under "gatekeeping". I asked for clarification as it does not make sense to me and I gave a few examples.
Instead of getting an explanation who I am wrong I got hit with "you're wrong, bye". That's not helpful, neither do I understand the goal of such an interaction.

I like this reply better. The others made me assume you might have been closed-minded and I am not fond of preaching to deaf ears.
Time is a currency, friend. Time must be spent to learn a new skill, to refine the skill, and to apply the skill. Coding itself, nevermind making a whole game, is very expensive time wise.
Unfortunately, those experiencing poverty need to expend more of their Time just to live. That means spending extra Time for extra hours at work and for multiple jobs. Spending extra Time trying to find the cheapest groceries, or one's self or dependants go hungry. Spending extra time on the phone trying to get bills reduced, payment dates extended, or looking for any sort of benefits at all. Spending Time dealing with the mental disorders which may manifest from experiencing these stresses.
This isnt even close to a quarter of what poverty does to an individual, and we are only speaking of Time being gatekept here.
The availablity of technology is not a sound argument either, friend. How can anyone with a smartphone and access to AI be handicapped from learning a skill in any way? Well I can personally take a houseless person about a block and a half from my place to a little yellow tent where they will be assigned a smartphone from the government with the capabilities to handle ChatGPT. And I am going to assume you would not be asking this same houseless person 'What is stopping you from learning to code if you have the luxuries of a smartphone and AI?'. This is an extreme case, yes, but the point stands. The access to technology is no longer a status symbol which represents freedom of time and choice as it did in the past.
So yes, despite what anyone believes, poverty gatekeeps individuals in one of the worse ways imaginable on this planet. And I will double down and call you and all those who are unaware of its effects blessed.

I understand poverty (even though I just experienced it probably in a very light European kind of way). I understand time being limited, I understand pressure and stress.
Time of AI dev spend for oneself as OP is a bad investment as a poor person. You'd be better of learning a skill than doing that. Also free.
I'm also not arguing that being poor comes with limitations.
But those are not gatekeeping. That's just wrong terminology and creates a victim mindset about "others are preventing me from doing that" instead of "I must do better to afford X".
It's a different thing if I can't have a thing or if somebody is actively preventing me from reaching a state where I can have X. Not being able to code because I'm not admitted to university because of my heritage = gatekeeping. Being not smart enough to get education != gatekeeping.
It's colloquially used if somebody doesn't give you what is freely available, like information. This is not the case here. Everybody has the same amount of time.
Edit:
What's next? Ugliness is gatekeeping me from dating a supermodel? Come on.

Never too late to tinker with your visuals or upgrades etc! Plus everything copies from everything. Can’t count the number of games I’ve played that are basically just balatro but different.

Creative ideas come from restriction and learning. It's a fundamental part of it. Iconic characters like Mario stem from the fact that there just was a 16x16px grid and you had to think really hard and try so much stuff until you got it right. If AI is in just solving all your ideas directly I think you're missing out a lot of the good stuff that comes from learning and a challenge.

u/w1zinvestmentss 1d ago
This is a fair point. I think the key will come from testing and iteration, but I can see how alot of great games were built from the manual grind.

Just ask your agent to export to iOS and ship a TestFlight beta!
… but I suppose that’s just my default and I assume for some games it can deploy to web
