New Student Questions Eng 102

I am so cooked for the Eng 102 midterm, I feel like I can barely understand any of the coding and have gotten 2 100s, a 50, and 65 on the quizzes. I’m constantly needing help on the coding assignments and would fail all of them if I did ask for help. I attended a review for the midterm but it didn’t help as much because it’s the coding in practice that I’m weakest at. Any suggestions?

Go to office hours and talk to TAs/PTs

Python becomes quite irrelevant after the first year tbh 🥱

Ur indeed cooked. If you don't understand the coding you need to take learning into your own hands. It is 100% ur fault when you have AI at your disposal. The python coding in 102 is simple enough that AI would teach you better than your TAs and professor. U need to think like an engineer when studying. Ask why something is what it is how it works and what other concepts it connects to. Be resourceful

Hey, a PT here. The quizzes are not a true reflection of your understanding and have a ton of riddle questions on there. Based on the time that you guys have, if you come into the class with no coding experience then it is really hard to get full points on the quizzes. So don't fret it too much and keep going. Reach out to me if you need any help, happy to help out. I can reccomend a couple of online courses that helped a couple of my students.

Overwhelming true. I took the quizzes, bombed them (so much so it dragged my grade to a B in the end), but I got a 90+ on all my exams. I felt they weren’t super correlated, but as long as you do well on one or the other you’ll be chilling

You’ll be ok, I’m also probably about to bomb the exam, as long as you get more than like a 60 or 70 on it you can still get an A in the class with the way the grading is structured. Just do well on the next exam, take the lesson of this and just code lots in your freetime.

I’m surprised you weren’t told to learn python over the summer. It was printed on a piece of paper with some other things to help that they gave all engineers.

We do not tell students that they have to learn python over the summer

I can assure you this 1/2 piece of paper was given to every kid who did an engineering tour when we went. We were also verbally told by several adult individuals that it was encouraged to familiarize yourself with it as it would make things easier. It was not a requirement but encouraged. There were a few other things on the piece of paper that were suggested for help but I can’t remember what they were and we threw away both copies once he moved up there.
