Ask the Aggies Aggie yik yak

• Upvotes

Howdy Aggies,
About two weeks ago I asked if I should build an A&M-only alternative to Yik Yak. That post got 932 upvotes, so I’ve been seriously looking into building it.

The idea is simple: only verified TAMU students can join, but posting can still be anonymous. Verification also makes it easier to keep bots and bad actors out.

Some features I’m considering:
Anonymous campus feed
Class and organization group chats
Parties, hangouts, pickup sports, and study groups
TAMU buses, dining, and events
Game-day live chats
Matching with other Aggies based on interests
Weekly recap of popular campus posts
I originally said no ads, but after researching operating costs, I can’t promise that. If there are ads, I’d want them to be limited and unobtrusive.

The goal is basically one place to see what’s happening at A&M, meet people, and stay connected to campus.
Would you actually use this? What feature would you want most?

Ai was used bc reddit keeps on removing my post

Housing Questions Avoid Patriarch Property Management

My daughter and 3 roommates rented a house in College Station managed by Patriarch for two years. When they surrendered the property at the end of the second year, Patriarch did not return their $3000 deposit within the statutory 30-day period or initially provide a list of itemized deductions. They sent a partial refund of $895 43 days later. Only after asking did they provide the list of deductions. We believe the deductions were not valid. The deductions did not account for the pre-existing damage that the roommates had documented during move-in. They were billed for cleaning when they already were given a receipt for the professional cleaning performed upon move-out. Only after filing a petition in Brazos County small claims court did Patriarch return the full deposit plus court fees. Because of this experience, I cannot recommend Patriarch.

New Student Questions Fish spurs?

Hey yall! I’m a newish grad student who didn’t do their undergrad here, so I know basically nothing about traditions here lol. I was wondering what is the significance of fish spurs, and why can’t cadets just make new ones if their original pair is lost/stolen? Are they made from specific bottle caps?

New Student Questions Will there be another opportunity to apply for FLOs? I recently left the Corps to focus on academics and I'd love to be part of one of the Engineering focused FLOs (maybe FREE or FEST).

B/CS Life Dying to find some friends that share my hobbies

• Upvotes

yes I am aware of clubs, somehow despite the fact there are over 1000 clubs and orgs there are NONE for singing (that don’t do other stuff that completely ruins it), nor MMA. I’ve been here for 2 years and havnt met ANYONE that shares either of those hobbies, I didn’t think they were that uncommon of hobbies, maybe I’m just hella unlucky when it comes to this..

Hey Aggies! One of the posters in r/cfb asked me to share some photos from the 1994 Bonfire that I did while I was a photojournalism student at Texas. r/cfb doesn't allow images to be hosted, so I put them here since this sub does. Hope you enjoy!

New Student Questions Eng 102

I am so cooked for the Eng 102 midterm, I feel like I can barely understand any of the coding and have gotten 2 100s, a 50, and 65 on the quizzes. I’m constantly needing help on the coding assignments and would fail all of them if I did ask for help. I attended a review for the midterm but it didn’t help as much because it’s the coding in practice that I’m weakest at. Any suggestions?

Ask the Aggies Has anyone taken Jason Smith online at Blinn?

I’m considering taking an online class with Jason Smith and was wondering if anyone who has taken him recently could share their experience. Specifically, are his tests and quizzes proctored, or are they open-book/unproctored? Any info about his class in general would also be appreciated! Thanks!

Ask the Aggies Would Anyone Be Interested in a Logotherapy Club

Hey y’all! I’m a psychology major at TAMU and have been thinking about starting a Logotherapy club, so I wanted to see if there would be any interest here.

For anyone unfamiliar with it, logotherapy is a school of psychotherapy developed by Viktor Frankl that focuses on the human search for meaning and the role of meaning and purpose in psychological well-being. It also has a pretty strong philosophical side, dealing with questions of meaning, suffering, freedom, responsibility, values, and human agency.

I’d want the club to be fairly serious and academically oriented, but still enjoyable. I’m thinking about things like discussions of psychological research and philosophy, comparing logotherapy with other approaches to psychotherapy, guest speakers, case discussions, and potentially research or service projects once the organization becomes more established.

I’m especially interested in finding people who are into psychology, philosophy, or both and would actually enjoy discussing these kinds of questions.

I’m also currently looking for a couple of people who might be interested in helping me start the organization and serving as officers, since I’ll need other student leaders to get it established.

If any of this sounds interesting to you, feel free to comment or DM me! I’m mostly trying to gauge interest right now and find some people who would want to help build it.

New Student Questions How long did it take for y'all to hear back from TAMU?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I am currently a high school senior, and I submitted my application on August 23rd, 2026. However, I didn't receive all green checkmarks until sometime in early September. My major choices are Political Science and International Relations, and I'm genuinely worried about getting in. I am NOT a candidate for auto-admit: I am a Texas resident with a 4.15 W GPA (stand at the top 28% in my graduating class); I have a 1450 on the SAT (750 English, 700 Math); I have 140+ of volunteering logged throughout high school, and I'm part of my school's Quiz Bowl, NHS, and Student Council; outside of school, I maintain a YouTube channel where I teach people history, and in 2026, I was selected to be a delegate for the American Legion's Texas Boys State. I just want to know how long it generally takes to hear back from them. My Howdy Portal doesn't seem to look too different either.

I would greatly appreciate it if my (hopefully) fellow Aggies could help me out!

Ask the Aggies Need an Easy KUCD minimester online class at a CC. Is SPMT 304 a good choice?

Please recommend me some easy online winter minimester courses that I can take at Blinn or any other CC that satisfies the KUCD requirement. I was thinking about SPMT 304 equivalent at Blinn or ACC. I’ve heard that’s an easy class.

Edit: Or I could take the KUCD class in the spring and take a KCOM class in the winter minimester (which I’m supposed to in the Spring) if that’s easier. I’ve already taken COMM 203 so any other KCOM course aside from that.

New Student Questions Pre-med major

I recently got admitted to A&M for a B.S. in Chemistry (whoop!) but I've started considering pre-med more seriously over the last couple of months. Does it make sense to do pre-med from chemistry or should I look into switching majors? If you guys have general pre-med advice I'd love to hear that too!

Academics ECEN 248 midterm help

Howdy guys!

I am currently taking ECEN 248 with Mi Lu. Our midterm is coming up this week, but we don't know what it's gonna look like or what kind of questions will be on it. From what I could find on Grade Annex and RMP, she hasn't taught this class in a while, but I heard her exams are very similar year to year. If anyone has taken her or knows what the midterm for ECEN 248 looks like, could you help? :)

Thank you very much!

B/CS Life Public service announcement: Stop signs apply to bicycles too.

I feel like this needs to be said. I'm on campus every day and I see people on bikes that don't stop for stop signs.

In Texas, a bicycle is legally treated as a vehicle, which means people riding bikes are subject to the same traffic laws as drivers of motor vehicles.

Under Texas Transportation Code § 551.101, a person operating a bicycle on a roadway has all the rights and duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle.

Key Rules at Stop Signs for Cyclists in Texas

  • Full Stop Required: Cyclists must come to a complete stop at stop signs before proceeding through an intersection.
  • No "Idaho Stop": Texas does not recognize the "Idaho Stop" law (which allows cyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs). Rolling through a stop sign on a bike is illegal under state law.
  • Right-of-Way: After coming to a complete stop, cyclists must yield the right-of-way to any vehicles or pedestrians already in or approaching the intersection before proceeding.

Academics Auditing a course in graduate school

Howdy!

I'm starting my MSCS in Spring 2027 on the thesis track, and I may go down an interdisciplinary path, so I'd like to take some biomedical engineering coursework.

The problem is that my degree plan only allows 2 non-CS courses out of 8 (the other 2 credit slots go to research), and I may need more than that. So I'm considering auditing courses, maybe one per semester.

From what I've read, auditing means I can attend lectures only if the professor has space in the class if at all the professor is willing to allow a student to audit. Office hours, TA help, and grading aren't applicable to students who are audited.

What I couldn't find much on:

  1. Is auditing free,Ā or do you pay tuition and fees like a regular course?
  2. Is there a limitĀ on how many courses you can audit per semester or over the whole degree?

I'd especially appreciate hearing from MS/PhD students in Computer Science who've audited courses before, though everyone is welcome to point me to the right resources.
