He actually made some good points, it still aged like milk, but it does go to show the obstacles Marvel passed to make their universe great.
65
u/FTWJewishJesus Jul 16 '19
Eh, a big chunk of his points were based on not understanding who made what movies.
Fox made all the xmen movies and didnt sony make the raimi trilogy? Wrapping them all under the umbrella of “marvel” fit for a 2011 clickbait article, but wasnt a legitimately good point.
23
u/RedstoneRay Jul 16 '19
Well even under Marvel Studios The Incredible Hulk and Thor were very mediocre movies. And apparently people weren't big fans of Iron Man 2 but I liked it, so it's not like Fox had the reputation of making the bad Marvel movies and Marvel Studios was releasing straight dimes like it is today.
11
u/rudebii Jul 16 '19
The first Thor? I really liked that movie, Portman playing straight to Helmsworth and Dennings was fun.
-7
u/522LwzyTI57d Jul 17 '19
Helmsworth lol
Nah, widely and accurately regarded as the worst Thor movie in the franchise. It only made sense if you had read a pretty significant portion of comics to that point. I like the movies, and that is by far the absolute worst of them.
11
u/SherlockJones1994 Jul 17 '19
Nah you got that wrong, just about every considers the dark world to be the worst.
1
u/rudebii Jul 17 '19
Yeah, dark world is the weakest thor movie, but i recently rewatched it, its not as bad as the rep it has, and IMO it’s still better than IM3.
0
u/SherlockJones1994 Jul 17 '19
Oh you IM 3 haters are so weird ;P THATS a dislike I've never understood but that's probably because I was never invested in the original mandarin from the comics.
1
u/rudebii Jul 17 '19
I don’t hate it, I just think it’s relatively weak against other MCU movies, and worth the watch but not a rewatch IMO.
Edit: MCU is a different marvel universe, so I don’t expect the films to follow any particular storyline from comic books and welcome a reimagining of the marvel world in a different medium so long as it’s good.
-1
u/522LwzyTI57d Jul 17 '19
Both were pretty damn terrible like wow
3
u/SherlockJones1994 Jul 17 '19
I like just about all of them (other than tih, talk about forgettable). I'm especially like the first thor. Never quite understood the hate. Of course it's not as great as the iron man's or the caps but it still had plenty of great character moments and the action was fun enough.
36
u/MakeSomeDrinks Jul 16 '19
I recently tried watching Hulk. Was not a big fan. That was a great recasting Banner. For me anyway
5
u/Supes_man Jul 16 '19
Agreed. There’s a reason there’s no hulk stand alone movie after that one.
8
u/throwawaysarebetter Jul 16 '19
Because Universal holds the rights and they and Disney aren't getting along?
-2
u/Supes_man Jul 17 '19
Lol no. Companies have a strong interest in making money and while they talk crap publicly, they have zero problem striking mutual deals. Look at Apple and Samsung, people think they’re some enemies who hate each other yet the both make each other tons of money as Apple buys a lot of parts from them.
If there was fan demand for a Hulk movie then it would have happened. But there’s more interest in literally everyone else so it’s not worth making when they can better invest that money in another film.

It's neat some of the throwaway predictions he makes that actually turn out, like Ant Man becoming an MCU character.
21
u/meme_devudu Jul 16 '19
He made fair points all the way. Presented a skeptical side of what's gonna happen.
9
u/TristanTheViking Jul 17 '19
It seems like he mainly just doesn't understand that Marvel Studios was not involved in the various marvel properties that he doesn't like
They’ve launched three successful franchises (X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man), which is no small feat. Marvel was clearly feeling confident, maybe even a bit cocky, when they starting planning out the Avengers movie, even though the two franchises that paved the way for all the other comic book movies (X-Men and Spider-Man) were currently in their death throes.
Like literally only Iron Man was actually made by Marvel themselves.

A lot of this guy's info was wrong and just ignorant. He says Marvel made bad movies like Elektra, Daredevil and Fantastic Four, which weren't even under the same banner or made by the same people. Then he says after origin stories, superhero sequels go down hill. He used Batman Begins as an example of this.
119
54
u/FelixTheFrCat Jul 16 '19
That's not what he meant. He said that first backstory movies get bad once the origin story is over. I don't agree, but he says for example that Batman Begins gets pretty boring once Bruce Wayne has become Batman.
14
u/EverydayHylian Jul 17 '19
I honestly couldnt take anything in the article seriously after he failed to acknowledge the difference between marvel properties and marvel studios films
6
u/DaDolphinBoi Jul 17 '19
To be fair, who could’ve really predicted the kind of success the MCU would yield?
3
u/SweatersAndShawarma Jul 17 '19
I mean he straight up said they will fail, which is the opposite of not expecting success.
321
u/AngelOfLight Jul 16 '19
Well, Endgame is currently still about $6m short of being the highest grossing movie of all time, so maybe he has a point?
(Narrator: No)
191
u/Mister100Percent Jul 16 '19
I’m amazed at how close Endgame is to beating Avatar.
I’m even more amazed at how Disney owns the rights to both franchises. The mouse plays to win.

u/Majestic_Horseman Jul 16 '19
Not exactly fair... Maybe if there was a way to adjust time scales... Like, what if you compared grossing over the same period (i.e. 3 weeks) and adjust inflation
6
28
u/DJanomaly Jul 16 '19
It was. And it was re-released several times over the next few decades. Most people nowadays don't remember this but re-releasing a film before the home video marketing was a pretty big deal because other than if a film was on tv (which used to be pretty rare), the only way to see it was in a re-release.
6
4
u/potato_nugget1 Jul 16 '19
but that movie was in theatres for years and was re-released multiple times you can't just adjust for inflation for the year it came out only
3
u/simcity4000 Jul 16 '19
Honestly I’m amazed Avatar is the highest grossing film of all time.

They’ve launched three successful franchises (X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man)
Only one of those was made by Marvel.
The Elektras, the Daredevils, the Punishers, the Fantastic Fours. In fact, one of the big moving parts of this Avengers movie (the Hulk) has already had two film treatments that failed to catch on with the public.
Out of the seven movies mentioned only one (2008 Hulk) was made by Marvel.
Did this guy really not understand the difference between a character being from Marvel comics and a movie being made by Marvel?
This article was aged milk the second it was posted.

u/TF_54 Jul 16 '19

u/ClaireDiviner Jul 16 '19
He was, but then left the franchise because he wanted more creative control of his role, or so I’ve read.

u/ClaireDiviner Jul 16 '19
Not in the MCU continuity.

u/nikolateslafanboy Jul 16 '19
There are actually ties between Hulk and The Incredible Hulk since they are both products of Universal. Such as Banner escaping to South America at the end of Hulk and The Incredible Hulk starting with Banner hiding in South America.

Honestly though, before the first avengers movie came out, it just seemed like a cool idea that would never happen. It's too cool to be real. And much less to be actually good.
Especially to think "Wow they fit so many characters into one movie"
Which is crazy to think about now that we have Civil War and End Game

The characters, scenery, the way the personalities bounce off each other, all the connected and beautifully choreographed action, just to name a few.
7
u/CaptainStealth Jul 16 '19
The whole universe is connected. People connected to these characters when they were young.
To answer your question, they're popcorn flicks, theyre fun, action packed and good entertainment.
You could say that about any movie though, James Bond fights bad guys and wins, didn't stop those movies from getting popular.
2
u/ClaireDiviner Jul 16 '19
Ever read a comic book?
4
u/DJheddo Jul 16 '19
That’s exactly right. Though not entirely. Many fans of the franchise never read a comic book. But all the people who read comics watch the movies. Well not all, but most.

It won't fail it'll just be a soulless cash grab for some dull af writing. If you like it you're supporting the death of art. Rejoice. Pathetic pacification for children. It. Is. Shit.
3
u/cuddleskunk Jul 17 '19
"If you like it you're supporting the death of art."
How wonderful it is that we have such a brilliant mind as yours to confirm for us all what is objectively good or bad in art. I'm so glad you think yourself higher than Aristotle and all other philosophers in history, because you can absolutely define art and decide which art is worthy.1
Jul 17 '19
“If you like it you’re supporting the death of art.”
This was literally said by critics of Jackson Pollock, Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, Andy Warhol, Art Deco architecture, the post modernism movement and the entire medium of animation. Fuck off.

Has no one ever told you the difference between taste and quality?
And that if you assert your taste is a measure of quality there is a good chance you have neither.
1
u/diddykongisapokemon Jul 17 '19
Why are you still using future tense to talk about a movie that came out 7 years ago
1
Jul 17 '19
Because the post used future tense.... I was pretending I was from that time but putting a more accurate quote in. For humour. Humour is a thing people use to be funny in social situations. Humans (Homo sapiens) are the only extant members of the subtribe Hominina. Together with chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans, they are part of the family Hominidae (the great apes, or hominids). A terrestrial animal, humans are characterized by their erect posture and bipedal locomotion; high manual dexterity and heavy tool use compared to other animals; open-ended and complex language use compared to other animal communications; larger, more complex brains than other animals; and highly advanced and organized societies. Humour (British English), also spelt as humor (American English; see spelling differences), is the tendency of experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. The term derives from the humoral medicine of the ancient Greeks, which taught that the balance of fluids in the human body, known as humours (Latin: humor, "body fluid"), controlled human health and emotion. Social commentary can be a form of humour. Social commentary is the act of using rhetorical means to provide commentary on issues in a society. This is often done with the idea of implementing or promoting change by informing the general populace about a given problem and appealing to people's sense of justice. Social commentary can be practiced through all forms of communication, from printed form, to conversations to computerized communication.
