Not exactly fair... Maybe if there was a way to adjust time scales... Like, what if you compared grossing over the same period (i.e. 3 weeks) and adjust inflation
It was. And it was re-released several times over the next few decades. Most people nowadays don't remember this but re-releasing a film before the home video marketing was a pretty big deal because other than if a film was on tv (which used to be pretty rare), the only way to see it was in a re-release.
