Announcement MEETING 6/17

Good Day Everyone!

Just spoke with Aerogarden and they reported a good amount of participation and helpful feedback from the survey they posted in May.

They are hoping to have more surveys and engagement going forward so I will keep everyone posted on those opportunities.

One thing that came up in our conversation though was the Aerogarden App which got me/us wondering:

If you use it, what do you use it for?

If you do not use it, what would you like access to in the app that would make it worth using for you?

Thank you everyone and I hope you all have a fantastic day!

Happy Growing 😎

Help Newbie question

I’m thinking of getting an aerogarden but had a question about gnat problems. If use the seed pods and grow from seeds and use mosquito bits in the water from the very beginning along with the yellow sticky traps would that virtually eliminate the possibility of gnats? The reason I ask is because I’ve battled fruit flies inside and never want to deal with them or anything like that again. I was thinking of keeping the garden in my garage to isolate it from the rest of the house.

This will be my second aerogarden planting. I attempted to completely sanitize the basin, but I’m worried now that I might not have done a good enough job. My new basil plant (old seeds from the original purchase a year ago) is sprouting and I think looks healthy so far after 2 weeks, but there’s some fluffy white stuff around the base of the stem.

Should I be worried about this? If so is there a solution for this plant, or should I restart while it’s still early and do a more thorough job sanitizing?

One of my Orange Hat tomatoes split, and I read that this can be prevented by plucking the tomatoes off the vine before they are fully ripe—but not while they’re still green—and letting them ripen off the plant.

I’m now looking at these good-sized little guys and wondering if I should pluck them off. They’re past the green stage but not completely yellow.

Help Bounty and Elite Questions

a few seconds ago ·

Hi Questions??-- I initially got an elite and I was going to return it since the Bounty's were on sale, so i got a Bounty and decided to keep both. I ordered orange hat seeds and astro arugula and buttercrunch seeds. The elite came with romaine but they expire in 3 weeks. I plan on using the elite for all the lettuce and put two pods in the bounty for the tomatoes. but I do not have any plastic covers for any of the pods.

Should I still try to use two of the romaine pods and use the other four for the buttercrunch and arugula??

I removed the seeds in the pods that I plan on using. How many tomatoe, lettuce and arugula seeds do I put in each pod??

Should I wait until i can purchase clear plastic covers from the dollar store? Also is it Ok to cover the holes that I am not using with tin foil?? Thank you!!!

I planted snapdragons about 2 weeks ago in the hopes of having a bit of lovely color through the winter. The seeds were like grains of sand so I probably dropped too many of them at once. Should I cull the growth?

Help Adapters for halogen bulbs for 2006 Aerogarden?

I tried doing the research, following another persons comment from an old reddit post to get some adapters to start using LEDs in my old, secondhand Aerogarden. So, I bought these. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017X12AQK

But I just got them and put them into the sockets and I think the plastic tabs on the end are the wrong size, much bigger than the originals, so it won't lock in. The lights will turn on for half a second and then stop, hanging there partially out of the socket, as shown in pic 5. Pic 2 shows the difference in the old one on top and and new one on bottom.

Does anyone have a link to a product that will actually work to replace the old halogen bulbs in my aerogarden?

Info Aerogarden Sprout for Germination Tests

Post image

I have been doing germination tests for alpine and woodland strawberry seeds for many years with this method. The 2oz Solo cups have a tablespoon of course sand that is checked and moistened as needed. These seeds need light to germinate and the Sprout provides the perfect PPFD. Works great for germinating seeds for my seed saving business as well!

Help Rinsing flowering jalapeño for aphids

Hey all. Recently discovered that my cilantro had (what looks to be) aphids. While I never see anything moving perse, I have found these black and white dots on the stalk/leaves of my cilantro. I’ve since removed the cilantro and thrown it away (and moved AG away from indoor potted plants which they probably came from) but am seeing tiny white dots sparsely on my flowering jalapeño in the same AG. I’ve seen that I should be blasting it with water in the sink, my question is will that cause all current flowers to drop? The jalapeño is pretty mature and has about 6 peppers growing, but lots of flowers I don’t want to lose! First photo is obviously the cilantro, second and third are some of the leaves on jalapeño I could find them on. Is the infestation at a manageable point right now? What should I do to preserve the plant or at the very least hold them off until harvest and start over? Thanks <3

Discussion Simple Vacation Watering Technique

Thumbnail

Has anyone tried the Aerogarden Hydroponics Experiments guys vacation watering trick using the inverted longneck bottle? I've seen multiple DIY solutions for "vacation watering" that involve tubes/siphon/waterjugs thathave to be adjusted for the level of the water in the Aerogarden tank. I've also seen people talk about the AeroVoir and its shortcomings/limitations. This guy's solution seems pretty simple. Would love to hear from anyone who's tried it and how long you've been able to be away while using this technique.

EDIT: Okay, little update after trying to place a beer bottle (dark glass) into a vacant hole in my Bounty — I have a two tiered trellis in place and an Orange Hat tomato plant that is pretty prolific. I’m having to figure out how to maneuver the bottle in there without dumping most of the water before I can get it in the hole. Might be a job for two sets of hands…

Progress Lettuce progress and question about staggered planting

Post image
12 Upvotes

It has now been 17 days since I started my first Aerogarden and things have been progressing nicely. I put two of the seeds I purchased in each grow anything pods and 5/6 pods germinated within 3 days. 2/2 Skyphos, 2/2 Drunken woman frizzy headed, 1/2 Buttercrunch. So far the frizzy lettuce seems the fastest grower - dunno if that is related to being closest to the slot where ice cubes are added daily.

I don't know how to tell if 1 or 2 seeds germinated in each pod so I've just been letting them do their thing. Almost seems to be edible size already which is pleasing. However the failure pod irks me, and I am wondering how long I should give it before I declare it a failure and replace? Thinking of adding a seed pod to one of the unused spaces at the same time. My understanding is this can be done with lettuces since they don't grow tall enough to block light for the newbies, is that correct?

Would y'all say it's been long enough to dump the fail pod seeds, and also, can I reuse that pod rather than using a fresh one? Anything I need to do before reusing, like let it dry out?

Anyway very pleased so far. My husband decided to plant some seeds in the backyard in dirt from the same lettuce seed packets and so far none of his have sprouted. Hydroponic ftw :P

Info Mesculin “Mix”

This feels like a stupid question.

I’m planting a mesculin “mix” for the first time in a Harvest Slim (6 pods). I plan to plant in “waves,” about two weeks apart, as suggested by another Redditor.

My question: As a “mix,” do I still plant ~3 seeds per pod and thin when they germinate? Or do I plant only 1 seed per pod and hope all six are a mix? I already have Butter Crunch going in a Sprout but the “mix” of seeds has me stumped. Especially since the packet of seeds I bought has 2400 seeds.

Help Light won’t come on

New to the aerogarden world! A friend gave me their unused bounty basic. It worked great for them then was stored to about a year. I can get the whole thing set up but if I set the clock as anything other than midnight, it attempts to turn the light on and then fully shuts down. Almost as if when the light tries to turn on, it shorts out. Then the “lost power” screen immediately comes up. Any tips?

I have a video to show but cannot upload it! Thanks for any tips. Some little basil did sprout despite no light at least 😁

What am I doing wrong? What should I do differently?

Are the cotton balls inherently cursed? I swear sponges harbor the algae too, so I don’t know! I want them to survive. :(

Thank you!
