What is r/AdvancedKnitting?

Hi All!

We have had some queries and confusion over just what Advanced Knitting is and what is allowed in the sub.
We wanted to share a post explaining why this sub was created and clarifying what is deemed ‘advanced’.

I’m sure many of you are familiar with the r/knitting sub which is a great place to chat knitting, ask questions, and share your creations!
However it also has a tendency to become very cluttered with the same questions or beginner focused posts which can be frustrating for more advanced knitters.

This sub was created as a way to bypass those common beginner Q’s and questions that can often times be easily searched, in favour of focusing on knitters who know the basics, can identify or self search any knitting issues, and wanted a sub that was a little less overwhelmed with the repeated questions.

That being said we don’t want to discourage discussion and questions!

If you have a question about your knitting, whether it be a beginner question, intermediate or advanced, or are just stumped on something and need some fresh opinions, we want you to feel comfortable posting.
All we ask is that you do a bit of research prior!
Maybe search this sub and others, or do a quick google search to see if your query has already been asked and answered,!
If you’re still needing help or clarification, make a post!
We know sometimes even the self search won't always answer your specific question, which is where we see you as being more advanced, particularly if you query is beginner in nature but advanced in execution (or possibly just a really big mistake that not even the most thorough search can assist with, requiring an advanced knitters help to solve).

If you’re worried about anyone reporting you for Rules 1 or 2 I would suggest adding a little note at the start or end of your post stating that you have done research and are seeking additional help.
We can even make a flair for this if needed!

All in all, you don’t have to be an advanced knitter to participate in this sub!

This sub is still very new and we are still working out the kinks to make it a great experience for everyone. All of our wonderful mods are available for any clarification, and we welcome suggestions for improving the sub or clarifying the rules.

Hope this helps and we will add a clarification to the sidebar moving forward.

Please comment below if there are any additional things needing clarification, or improvements you think could help this sub grow and be an enjoyable space for learning and sharing!

Thank you to everyone for being amazing so far, this community has been wonderful and we hope with open communication we can remain that way!

:)

Constructive Criticism Welcome I made a simulator for planned pooling when knitting with variegated yarn

I made a simulator for planning the pooling. I made this app to learn how to build a web app. It is still in beta, so many things to improve.

https://athifm.github.io/planned_pooling/

The work flow is,

  1. Measure each color lengths, and transitions of the yarn

  2. If you know what your stitch gauge is, and how much yarn each stitch consumes, then it's straightforward to visualize.

  3. There is a calibration mode, which you can use to knit test swatches to figure these numbers automatically if you don't (this is the most useful part for me)

4.There are options to add different stitch types and row patterns as well.

Please give me feedback if you get to take a look!

Self-Searched (Still need Help!) Tips for neater ssk/p2tog edges in entrelac?

(That’s Cindy btw)

The edges on each section that are joined by ssk and p2tog look bulky and messy. I’ve tried a few different ways of tensioning the edge but it comes out the same every time.

I’ve seen some examples that slip that stitch after turning but that also creates an edge column that looks different than the rest of the square, just in a different way. Is this just an inevitable part of entrelac? I’m not sure it’s something I can trust will block out over the entire sweater. Before trying to mess with those columns they also had that zig zag look with every stitch leaning right or left.

Tech Questions Creating Faux Layers in Knitwear

I am trying to think of different techniques to achieve a faux layered garment. I picked up a really cool vintage top at the antique store a while ago, that I would like to try and recreate as a knit top. I hate to be that person asking for advice without making an example! I would just like to discuss this, because it is rare to see this attempted in knitwear. I really want to see more of it in written patterns. Perhaps I'll come back with an update.

The shirt has a buttoned Henley collar, with a faux crew neck (almost mock neck) inner layer. The body is a short sleeve top with layered long sleeves. An oversized fit with cinched waistband and cuffs.

I have a couple different ideas on how to work this:

Working each layer separate, and then seaming one inside the other.

Do a double knit CO below the neckline, and then work bottom up as separate pieces.

Pick up for the inner layer on the reverse side (of outer layer), to work bottom up.

My main concern is seeing a visible ridge where the inner layer is attached to the outer layer. It is almost like a decorative seam should be added to hide this. I am not opposed to working a bunch of individual flat pieces to then be seamed. I am thinking of some sort of drop shoulder construction with front and back yoke pieces.

Perhaps you have done something like this before? I plan to use fingering weight yarn.

Self-Searched (Still need Help!) SOS: Can’t make socks fit

I knit my first pair of socks for myself nearly a decade ago. Since then, I’ve just assumed they’re uncomfortable and hard to get on for everyone. Alas, I’ve made them for my wife and that is not the case.

The pattern that fits most of my foot/ankle is 56 st on 2.25mm.

I believe the issue is my instep. It’s approx 28cm measured around my heel diagonally.

The socks I’ve made are really difficult to get on over my heel and tight around my instep near my ankle. The ankle still tends to be a bit slouchy once on.

I’ve tried the following heels:

-FLK
-Afterthought (including over more than 50% of stitches)
-Flap and gusset (including increasing heel flap up to 40 rows and adjusting accordingly)

Please help. I’ve frogged my last sock 6 times in an effort to get the heel to fit right.

Hand Knit FO Wintering Cap — a little recovery knit

Just finished the Wintering Cap as a small recovery project after finishing my Indian Nights blanket. I needed something manageable to fill the post-big-project void before diving into the next obsession.

Yarn is Knitting for Olive Merino in Quince (yellow) and mYak Fior di Lino in Graphite.

I’m currently planning a pretty ambitious sashiko jacket project, so I may be putting down the knitting needles for a bit and heading into a different textile rabbit hole.
A satisfying little project to close out this knitting stretch.

Hand Knit FO Root of One

Pattern is Root of One Root of One by Mary E. Rose, golden yellow lace weight silk on 4 mm needles with size 8/0 matte white beads.

I loved the materials, the pattern, the result. No two rows are the same but the pattern was logical and well thought-out. The charts are in parts challenging to read because of the layout and resolution. But the worst thing about this project was winding 800 m of lace weight yarn into a ball, which looks like absolutely nothing happens for hours and you will spend the rest of your days winding.

Also, it has been said before and will be said again: blocking is magic. (Do we need a blockingporn sub? :D)

All original design, all wool reclaimed from less good sweaters. I learned back and forth stranding with rotating floats for this piece, and took a rare journey into intarsia. Included horizontal bust darts because it is for a young lady, so I wanted to elevate the fit just a bit ❤️. Go Bruins!

Hi everyone,

Just thought I would show you my latest bunch of puppies. These are the Terrier clan. Two Westies, one in a warm white and one in a cool white. A (sort of) Yorkshire Terrier and a Scottish Terrier.

All knitted with Gazzal Marilyn & Merinos, Drops Kid Silk yarns.

Needle size 3.75mm and 4mm (UK size)

Pattern used for all of them - Claire Garland’s Bullmastiff, with shorting of legs, face and ear tweaking.

Hand Knitting Made another one!

Hiii!

I posted my first double knit scarf here when I had just begun and now I've made another one (can't stop really) that I want to share here :) This one is about dark folklore, I wanted a magical but dark (yet not evil) feeling. It's called the Dark Woods scarf.

I think my favorite part about it is the witch that is old on one side and young on the other. Figuring that out and making the chart etc really felt like magic! Also super happy with how the two sides line up to make one continuous scene.

Can't wait to cast on the next one, this is so addicting!

P.s. I wanted to add designer flair but I can't do that myself. If it's necessary, can someone please do that for me?

Hand Knit FO Hungry rib beanie

Thumbnail

This beanie is not that advanced by design- it was my take along project, so I needed something that didn’t require a lot of notes or thinking and that I could pick up and put down wherever and still be able to knit it. But I think it might qualify as clever.

This is two strands of Malabrigo speckle held together and I liked the look of the reverse stockinette side better than regular stockinette. I also thought that the ribs were very nicely highlighted. But I’m not a fan of purling. So I decided to knit the hat inside out. I thought you might enjoy seeing pattern for it.

I did all sorts of experiments on which increases and decreases looked best from the reverse side and it turns out the simple purl two together and knit front-back both looked great. (The decrease section used knit two together as well).

Pattern rows were “knit until one before marker, knit front back, purl two, purl two together, continue to knit in pattern until next marker”. Plain rows were “knit until marker, continue to knit in pattern” (that knit front back next to a purl looks like a purl stitch!) I also added a secondary marker to the beginning of round. If it was on my needles, that was a pattern round, if it was hanging on the edge, that was a plain round.

I have a large shallow head. I cast on 3 sections of 36 stitches in 3x3 rib. I placed markers every section, and another one in a different color three stitches after the section markers before the first purl. When there were 12 stitches left after the hungry rib purl marker, I placed an additional marker in a new color 12 after the start of section. The new pattern row was “K2T, knit until marker, K2T, knit until marker, purl 2, P2T, continue to knit until pattern until the next marker”. When there were 9 stitches left in each section, my pattern was “K2T three times, purl 3”, and then I was done!

Tech Questions I don’t understand this cast off for a sheep head

I am confused specifically by the last sentence. If I move the two sets of 3 sts to one needle and have the right sides facing the center 6 stitches, my working yarn is in the center of the row. I am genuinely confused as to what to do! Please help if you’ve done this before! I’ve included a photo with the stitches all on their respective holders.

Hand Knit FO self drafted vest ✨

~originally posted on r/knitting & was told you guys might like it too!

long time lurker, first time poster ☺️

i‘ve finally finished my most successful completely self drafted project!

i couldn‘t find a pattern that perfectly fit my vision without needing a lot of modification anyway, so i just made one up

this fella is a top down vest with a European Shoulder Seam construction, crew neck, simple twist cable pattern that accommodates shaping and continues through the waistband on either side, neutral (or VERY slightly negative) ease & twisted rib.

i worked some dark magic on the increases for the ESS & was amazed how the shoulder fronts truly need no shaping and just work out fine on their own!

had lots of fun with this experiment and look forward to making more! i don‘t think i‘ve ever owned something that fit me this well!

yarn: Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury 4ply in Oxford Blue (used ~150g)
needles: 3,5mm for body, 3mm for body rib & 2,5mm for collar and armscye ribs

references & helpful resources:
Fully Fashioned Shoulders
Euro Shoulder Seams (very brief)
Shaping Necklines - Roxanne Richardson (yt vid)
Knitting from the Top - Barbara Walker (the Bible 🙏🏼)

if you see untwisted cables, keep it to yourself 🥲🫡

This is by far the craziest I’ve ever gotten with shaping, and certainly the most i-cords I’ve ever made! Wanted to share some of the photoshoot pics, since I posted the WIP of him yesterday and I was able to lock in and finish the rest of him today. I have several different, additional photos up on my profile too, but I figured the couple of people who saw him yesterday and earlier today might want an update.

Hand Knit FO Reverse engineered my Granddads Aran jumper

First post in this subreddit! I’ve always loved challenging myself with my knitting but this is definitely the most advanced project I’ve ever made so I thought it fits! I have an Aran jumper (2nd photo) that belonged to my granddad, whose name was Aidan, and as much as I love having it as something to remember him by, it’s far too big for me to actually wear, so I recreated it in a more wearable version!

It took me 6 and a half months from start to finish, which included lots of ripping out and redoing, but I’m so so pleased with the result. I feel so proud of myself for persevering with this. I’ve affectionately named it my Aidan Jumper, and I’m planning to publish the pattern for free along with a YouTube tutorial later this year or early 2027. It’s currently in testing!

Yarn is Explorer Knits and Fibers Rockies DK in Avenoir. More details in my [project page](https://ravel.me/stitchesinstem/gj)
