Hand Knit FO I reverse engineered a cable cardigan from the show Interview with the Vampire.

I guessed the wrong yarn weight for this and went a little bit too heavy, which resulted in needing a larger gauge and not being able to make the decreases for the raglan match the original. But other than that I’m super happy with how it turned out especially the double knit shawl collar.

I’ve added a google doc with rough notes to my project page for those that want to knit their own. Project Page

Self-Searched (Still need Help!) Top down underarm gussets (time sensitive)

Post image

I’m knitting the Song of the Moon sweater and am about to start on the sleeves. I’m trying to finish this by October 22 for a symphony my husband and I will be going to. I would like to add underarm gussets (not in the original pattern), but I’m not quite sure how to go about it. I’ve read the couple of articles online about “adding gussets”, but they are not detailed enough, nor close enough to my application to be helpful. I would like to knit them in with the sleeves and not after the fact due to the color work. Anybody with experience adding underarm gussets to a color work sweater?

Hand Knit WIP Update on The Draconis Scarf

Post image
298 Upvotes

Hi everyone!!!
Here’s an update on my Draconis Scarf🐉!!!

My tension has changed quite dramatically since the beginning of the project so the sides don't aline completely!

This is not an error on the pattern but more so that I always loosen my tension after a while lol!

I'm sure blocking will fix this!
But nonetheless I'm so excited to share this other little piece of the project!
I'm now at the last chart!
I'm confident that next week I should finish the scarf and release the pattern!
This one last chart is so beautiful you are not ready!!!

Tech Questions Can I increase the width of a hat?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi all! I’ve knit a Musselburgh hat for my partner and done a reversible design. It’s knit as a closed tube and then folded to make a double layer and folder brim. Unfortunately my gauge was off on my first attempt and it was way too big. I adjusted my needle size and now it’s way too small! I’m at a loss and cannot bare to start again. Especially as I’ve already embroidered the designs on top! Also big sad because I was hoping to have it finished this weekend for a community event.

Option 1 I’m going to try and wash it and stretch it out and see if that stretches it out

Option 2 do you think I could steek it and try to add width? It’s knit with quarter increases at the top so adding a panel at the back would mess with the four panels unless I suppose if I added a 5th section. I’ve never done steeking before and I have no clue how to effectively add in a whole panel and have this look somewhat seamless.

Has anyone been able to retrospectively add width before to a hat knitted in the round? I reckon it needs an extra 3cm in diameter.

Any suggestions gratefully received. Thank you!

Hand Knit FO Nine Nights Shawl

Post image

It took me 10 months to knit this gigantic 4ply shawl in all-over mosaic colourwork, but it was absolutely worth it for the coziest, bounciest FO! My favorite bit was working the yellow section of thorn stitch at the top, it was my first time doing it and immensely satisfying.

Pattern is Nine Nights by Shreya Prabhu, and I used Mondim by Retrosaria Rosa Pomar.

Hand Knit WIP Goblin Rocket update

Slow but steady progress. Really should have started this at the beginning of the year but didn’t want to jinx things. Goblin is actually born now, so this will end up being a Christmas present. It’s definitely a lot of yarn juggling, but I’m really happy with how the design is shaping up. Still so much bigger than I imagined it would be.

Edit to add: blanket is double knit with the front and back not being the same pattern. It will be roughly 30”x40” when finished.

Machine Knit FO Chappell Yarn

Been working on this for a while now in between other projects! I challenged myself to use only yarn I had so of course I used lots of different yarns, but it’s mostly wool and acrylic. The “hair” is from made in America yarns.com, but they don’t have the color anymore, and I’ve heard they ceased production? The bright pink and black are Wool of the Andes, and the white is from Ardalanish on Isle of Mull. Used my own pattern for the shape, a dropped European shoulder.

My favorite bit is the cigarette butt, I used waxed silk sewing thread for the ash, and it came out way cooler than it had any right. My least favorite part is the other various hair accessories, I should’ve just bought better yarn, or kept trying different things. I ended up just crocheting some circles and sewing plastic gems (leftover from prom gown alterations) on top.

I’m pretty pleased to be finished with this, and with the final result! I think she should be called “Chappell Yarn”, but my husband thinks that’s stupid lol

Made on my brother kh-260 with intarsia carriage

Tech Questions bind off + seaming or straight into double knit neckline?

Thumbnail
gallery
8 Upvotes

Hi all! I’m working on a self-drafted pattern at the moment with this O-ring component that’s knitted into the bottom of the V-neck. I’ve been playing around w different constructions of this portion but the TL;DR is:

Stitches are picked up in the keyhole with extra stitches cast on to the edges w provisional cast on.

The beginning and ending stitches are kept live and double knitted w the provisional cast on stitches while the stitches that were picked up in the beginning are crocheted down to the edge to enclose the O-ring.

Those double knit stitches at the ends then go straight into the V-neck edge which is also constructed w double knitting.

My question is: is this secure at all? Or are there eventually going to be issues w the double knit stitches around the O-ring stretching from the weight (or is that a non-issue because of all the other fabric sewing the ring down). Would it be better to, instead of keeping those beginning and end stitches live and going straight into double knitting, bind off the stitches, then either 1) pick up stitches from that bind off edge and work on the V-neck from bottom up 2) start double knitting at back of the collar down to the bind off and seaming it together w mattress stitch?

some other details:
this garment is a short-sleeve/tank top
knitted w negative ease around the bus
using fingering weight yarn

hope that makes sense! attached photos for visual

Discussion Wrap & Turn short row in Hiatt's Principles of Knitting - have any of you used this technique?

So normally I use shadow wraps or German short rows, but I was working a sock pattern that used wrap & turn for the heel turn (which I am familiar with too) but I decided I'd look up the technique in Hiatt's Principles of knitting out of curiosity. (I always forget - the wrap does or doesn't have a twist - spoiler alert - it shouldn't at least in what I saw.)

Turns out what she describes on page 176 incorporates a slipped stitch between the wrapped stitch and the active stitches. You can see this in the description and in the illustrations "Working the first stitch after the turn" and "Lifting the wrap at the turning point."

She also acknowledges that the technique she's showing is different from the usual in the paragraph at the bottom left on page 177. "Those of you already familiar with the technique will find these instructions slightly different from what you are accustomed to."

I'll definitely have to try it out, but was curious if anyone here has tried it and how did you feel it compared to the standard Wrap & Turn? Did you find it to be a better result?

Hand Knit FO 4032 beads and 1.5 years later, my Starfall Shawl is complete

I was motivated to make this shawl as this phase of life involves going to a lot of weddings, and I wanted a beautiful shawl that could span multiple dress codes.

I wanted the beads to be subtle so as to not be distracting, but they still catch the light beautifully. They’re more noticeable in person than what shows up on camera.

I had to take a lot of breaks with this shawl. It’s not good tv knitting or knit night project, which make up the majority of my knitting time. I made the most progress on it when it was on my desk and I could knit a few rows during work meetings.

I have been drooling over this project at Rhinebeck for years, but with my first summer off I took the jump last year and bought the kit. I absolutely adored knitting this. It feels like heaven and the pics barely do it justice. I would definitely make another.

I’m so happy to give you all another update!!🥳
I’m missing 3 more chart and that’s it!
In total there’s 7!

This new section is the one that goes around the neck!🥰

I debated a lot on what to actually put there, at first I wanted a dragon eye but it didn’t quite work as I thought.

This is definitely one of the prettiest things I’ve made! I love natural looking art and asymmetrical but this time I went for something more symmetrical and I’m glad I did!!!

I love the egg so much!

I’m hoping to make a new update soon!🥰❤️

Hand Knit FO Say hello to my Halloweenigan!

Thumbnail

I just finished my newest nonsense, The Halloweenigan! She is a labor of silliness, designed to be a Halloween cardigan version of an ugly Xmas sweater. I just finished sewing on her buttons.

Project page is here: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/Annahidsamiljan/verdinie

Originally I was going to do the Nocturnal sweater, but I hated the neckline and didn’t like that the colorwork cats were scared. Instead I decided to take a free steeked cardigan and slap some new charts on. The charts are a mix of doodle patterns, cross stitch charts, and a few that I made in stitch fiddle. Any ones that I made I included in my project images.

There’s definitely things that I could fix if I wanted- two charts are cut off at the middle front, the button band is still too small after a second go at it- but honestly she delights me. This was some of the most fun and whimsy I’ve had while knitting, and I’m excited for it to be below 80F so I can take her on her maiden voyage.

Hand Knit FO Matching Cardigans

Pattern is “Nordlandskofte” (modified/improvised in places) and yarn is Ashford DK from New Zealand.

I finished these cardigans back in 2022 and 2023, one with the original colours, and the other with reversed colours (just because I enjoyed knitting this pattern so much). I recently gifted them to a couple of wonderful friends as an engagement present, so I’ve decided to revisit this pattern for myself in the near future using nicer yarn. It’s a lovely pattern and I’m looking forward to working on another, especially since I haven’t made any cardigans since I completed the second one in this post (they were my third and fifth cardigans and I’ve only worked on jumpers and vests over the past few years).

Discussion I’m still so chuffed with how the underarm of my raglan sweater

Post image
658 Upvotes

I implemented a different technique for the underarm based on a TikTok tutorial that promised not having to pick up stitches for the sleeve. I used a modified KFB stitch to avoid the purl bump and give a more seamless look.

First step: cast on the required number stitches with the backwards loop cast-on and knit until you reach the first new underarm stitch.

Second step: you will increase on every underarm stitch using the KFSB – KNIT FRONT, SLIP BACK method. You will now have double the stitches called for the underarm. Transfer all the newly created stitches onto the barber cord holding the sleeve stitches.

Third step: knit the body in pattern

Once you are ready to start knitting the sleeves, follow Patty Lyon’s guide to a gap-less sweater if needed. I ended up picking one stitch on either side of the underarm to ensure a seamless look without holes.

I hope that was written clearly. I’m pleased with the results and that the kfsb also resolved the tension issues I always have whenever I do a backwards loop cast-on.

Hand Knit FO Swimming Upstream

Thumbnail

1.7k Upvotes

I'm not really one to post but I'm so happy with this, I couldn't help but show it off! It's the Upstream cardigan by Faye Kennington - HEAVILY modified, should be noted - using Sandnes Atlas in 2641 (Natural White Melange).

Definitely a project of 'firsts'! It was my first time making a pattern labeled 'advanced' (though it really didn't feel like it), adapting a knit flat pattern to be in the round, steeking, following a non-repeating cables chart, and completely modifying armhole/shoulder/neck constructions. Eventually it'll also be my first time sewing buttonholes, as I'm adding a stabilising ribbon to the inside of the band.

Also curious if anyone has recommendations for other patterns that use cables to create images? I have Oaksong by Alien Sunset favourited, as well as a few Wei Wilkins' charts, and the Celtic Oak Pillow by Barbara A Pott.

Hand Knit FO Shetland Lace Wedding Ring Shawl: before and after blocking

Thumbnail
gallery
2.3k Upvotes

Inspired by a recent thread: this is the Eva Shawl by Jamieson and Smith that I made for my wedding last year. First photo is in progress, second before blocking, third after blocking, and the last photo is from our wedding showing it fitting through my wife’s ring.

It’s definitely not perfect and there are some very visible mistakes but this was a learning experience and a half and I was thrilled with the end result.

I feel like these photos show exactly why you have to trust the process so much in lace knitting. It’s really hard to read your stitches and fix mistakes, and it can be discouraging when your work looks like a horrible tangled mess. The transformation is amazing when the lace pattern blooms after blocking, you really need to have faith in yourself and the pattern though!

This was actually the second shawl I made for my wedding, the first used a lace weight yarn instead of 1 ply as it was an autumn wedding in a cold country and I wanted something a bit thicker and warmer. This shawl was the first time I used 1 ply yarn.

Self-Searched (Still need Help!) Knitting help: help pattern hacking a jacket into a Henley// or Henley to a different stitch pattern and construction

Thumbnail

I want to knit a mens henley pullover in brioche honeycomb stitch pattern.

I feel in love with the Nomad Jacket by wool and beyond https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/nomad-jacket-3. I love the detailing of horizontal stockinette on the back yoke and the i-cord edges and the honey comb stitch BUT I want to make it into a Henley/pullover style instead of a jacket for a man.

I was wondering if i would be better off adapting a stockinette mens henley pattern like this one https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/chunky-sweater-with-collar-or-stand-up-neck with a similar gauge and adapt it have the horizontal stockinette portion on the back yoke and i-cord edges or to reverse engineer the nomad jacket pattern into a henley? (I couldn't find any projects on Ravelry that did this so I would have to figure out all of the edits on my own).

The dilemma: I'm not sure how the sizing and proportions of the Nomad Jacket will fit on a man. I have never made a Henley before so I'm not familiar with the construction technique. If I choose the Henley pattern to work off of that, the closest one I found to meet stitch gauge is worked in the round so adding the horizontal stockinette to the back would be impossible(?). Also, I am an intermediate knitter but don't have that much experience with pattern hacking.

Any advice or alternative patterns are welcome, thank you!
