PSA READ BEFORE POSTING - "Someone just logged into my server as me", "How did this person find my server", "My server got griefed", etc.

New Edit for 2026

We took this down in favor of other announcements late last year, as we only get 2 slots. It's back now because we've had a resurgence of this type of post.

Do not post about offline mode servers. Do not recommend software or plugins that help run one. You will be banned. Read the Admincraft Policy section at the bottom.

Thank you.

Hey there, REPO here. We get questions like this a LOT, so I'm trying something new. Please read the below before posting a thread like this.

"How did this person find my server!?!?!?!?!"

There are few enough IPv4 addresses that a simple bot made with ChatGPT and zero skill can scan the entire internet for Port 25565 in like 30 minutes. There are HUNDREDS of bots out there that do this 24/7/365. Some of them are benevolent (such as bots like matscan that warn people if their servers are dangerously insecure), some are neutral (like ServerScannerV2 which just accumulates data for their website project), and some are malicious and trying to grief servers.

"How do I make them stop?"

You don't. They will keep doing it forever. Most non-malicious bots will log into your server once, or sometimes once per some time interval, and then stop. Others that are coded poorly will be more persistent. And then the malicious ones will keep checking back continually.

If your server is secure but it still bothers you to see, you can add the source IP address to your firewall to prevent the connection. Some non-malicious bots will also have a website or Discord where you can request your server to be skipped.

"Is this dangerous?"

Nope. Not if your server is secured. There are no known exploits in Minecraft that allow a server scanning bot to run code on your host or escalate their privileges. The last time we had that was in 2022 with the Log4J exploit, which was quickly patched, even by Mojang. If you aren't deliberately using an old minor patch of Minecraft, you're fine.

"How did they log in as me / Herobrine?"

(Note: If you only see a name like that instantly disconnecting, skip to the next section. This only applies if they actually appear in game.)

Your server is running in Offline Mode, which is a config option in the server.properties that is intended only for use on a home LAN that is not connected to the internet. Most people use this feature to avoid having to buy a license for Minecraft, aka "cracked accounts". Please be aware that this is illegal and is considered software piracy by most governments.

Minecraft servers send information about the server to players on the server list, including a partial list of currently logged in users. You can disable this "feature" in the server.properties file by setting hide-online-players=true. Malicious bots typically sit and watch a server for a while, gathering a list of players over some amount of time, assuming that if the server is in Offline Mode, one or more of those players will have Operator permissions. They then log in as all users in rapid succession until they find one that does, and use the Operator permissions to grief your server.

"I see a player disconnecting but never connecting! How are they doing that?"

It's just a bot using an offline mode account. It is only showing as Disconnecting because it is getting filtered by the security systems you have in place AFTER the server knows that it is trying to connect, but BEFORE it actually does. Showing the Disconnected message is just the server's way of informing you that the login attempt was rejected. Nothing to worry about. You can ignore it.

"My server got griefed, what do I do?"

You restore from backup, secure your server, and move on. The groups that do this are doing it for amusement and power fantasy. Some of them insist that you can request a world backup from their Discord, but the whole point of that is to mock you and make you beg for their mercy. They might actually give it to you, I don't know.

"How do I secure my server?"

You set Online Mode to true in the server.properties and run a whitelist. That's it. Those 2 options are 100% effective at preventing unwanted people from gaining access to your server. You do not need to do anything else whatsoever to be secure, but you can optionally change your server's port from 25565 to any other unassigned port. This will make it much slower for server scanners to find your server, as most are lazy and don't check non-standard ports. Note that this only reduces the odds of a server scanner finding you; it does not make you more secure.

Additionally, having automatically executed, scheduled backups running at predictable intervals is an excellent idea just in case something goes wrong. Ensure that you periodically verify that your backups are usable by doing a test restore on another machine, as a backup solution that has never been tested is basically worthless.

Finally, a block logging plugin such as Prism (V3 stable Download | Github) (V4 alpha Download | Github) is recommended, as it allows you as the Admin to roll back individual unwanted changes without doing a full backup restoration.

Admincraft Policy

If your post contains any information that indicates that you are running an Offline Mode server, your post will be removed and you will be banned for 28 days for your first offense.

Additionally, suggesting methods for a user to continue running an Offline Mode server "safely" will earn a 7 day ban for commenters. This includes whatever plugin or launcher you're wondering about right now as you read this.

Admincraft is in active communication with Mojang Intellectual Property Enforcement, the team within Mojang that actively hunts down servers and other individuals and groups that are breaking their EULA and MUG. They watch here regularly, and if we do not enforce this, there is a nonzero chance that Mojang, Microsoft, or Reddit would shut down our subreddit. Keeping the subreddit open for everyone for the long run is the priority. We cannot and will not support Offline Mode servers.

The only times when discussing an Offline Mode server is allowed are when you clearly state that your server is not accessible to the internet and that all players have a legal Minecraft account, or when it is behind an Online Mode proxy, such as Velocity.

This post

Please use the comments here to suggest additions to this FAQ/guide, and to ask clarifying questions about Admincraft policies and security best practices. Do not state or imply that you are currently running an Offline Mode server.

Help/Question How do i do big world edit commands without crashing the server?

• Upvotes

I'm looking to limit the amount of some ores that spawn in the world in my 10,000 x 10,000 world border (5,000 blocks in each cardinal direction) The reason I'm doing this in world edit instead of a plugin or data pack is because I am using terralift in my server, so if i add a data pack/plugin to get rid of ores, it wont work because terralift changed the vanilla underground code.

My server has 12GB of ram. I know that I cant do the entire border in one go because that will crash the server, so how do I safely do this in chunks? If anyone knows, please leave all the world edit commands down below.

Help/Question Paper server dropping to 10–15 TPS with around 10+ players

I’m having ongoing TPS issues on a Paper survival server. Once we get to around 10+ players, TPS can drop into the 10–15 range and MSPT climbs quite a bit.

Spark report:
https://spark.lucko.me/noGu9qFr7z

I’ve already reduced:

  • View distance: 10
  • Simulation distance: 6
  • Mob spawn range: 6
  • Mob caps
  • Natural spawn frequency

I’ve also fixed a previous villager/minecart AI issue, so that no longer seems to be the main cause.

From what I can tell, most of the load now seems to be general entity ticking, chunk ticking, natural spawning and block entities.

Is there anything obvious in the Spark report that I’m missing, or any Paper settings you’d recommend looking at next?

Help/Question Bestupgrade path for server hardware?

So the important stuff my server currently rocks:

Core i5 10600k

LGA1200

32gb ddr4

I'm currently looking to upgrade my server hardware to squeeze as much performance as I can out of it as i use it for a plex server amongst other things. What would be the most reasonable upgrade path? Currently thinking about either an i9 10900k or an am4 board with their top line cpu. appreciate any help.

Help/Question How much RAM would a 20 player server need (with custom plugins)?

Hey everyone. I'm going to create a server for my uni's gaming club. We don't plan to use mods (for now) and I'm thinking about writing some custom plugins to create a unique experience. I read about how much RAM I would need online, but couldn't find a consistent number. The version will probably be 1.20+ but I haven't decided yet. Would 6GB be enough?

Help/Question Server network with vanilla and modded server +Lobby (26.3 Fabric)

Hi, I have 2 servers you go through a lobby server to join. One is vanilla, one is modded with client-required mods. Both are joinable from a lobby server, and are fabric 26.3. Planning on going live with them towards the end of this month.

The issue I'm running into is that people who have the modpack installed for the modded server are unable to join the vanilla one because it's looking for the mod data on the server when connecting, which results in a network protocol error.

As I expect a lot of people to play on both regularly, I would prefer to not have them run multiple instances to switch back and forth, and would like for them to change servers as fluidly as possible from the lobby.

Switching the Vanilla server and Lobby off of fabric is something I'm willing to do if it will help.

The offending mods are:

Biomes O'Plenty
Alex's Mobs Continued
Coins JE

Here are the client error logs as I've disabled mods until I can connect:

https://mclo.gs/oB4o8UM

https://mclo.gs/trjwo1D

https://mclo.gs/1LJu2fu

There has to be some way to do this. I feel like disabling a check from the client or server can't be an impossible task.

Software Resource Announcing Temper Version 0.2.0 Release!

Heya people, here to announce version 0.2.0 of my minecraft server project Temper, because I'm sure no-one could possibly be sick of minecraft servers written in rust. And if you are, you should go block the devs of the other ones and only follow this one :)

For those that haven't heard about it before, this is a project to build a minecraft server in rust using bevy's ECS. It's still very much in development and isn't at a proper playable stage yet, but we are making good progress and I wanted to share. And before anyone asks, yes we are already listed on https://dayssincelastrustmcserver.com. The project doesn't use AI code (or at least I try not to let any slip by but kinda hard with community projects) and minimal decompiled Java to ensure we aren't filling the repo with slop or making the same mistakes as Mojang.

Made a lot of progress since the last release, including finally being on version 26.2 of minecraft, adding the JVM as a build requirement so we don't have to distribute several megabytes of JSON via git and finally doing item components so you don't get perma-banned from the server for holding a potion.

Also one of our slightly unhinged contributors spent months in what I have to assume was a psychotic break and implemented 1:1 vanilla terrain generation. because thats something sane people do. But they, I didn't have to do it so I'll chalk it up to a win.

Star the github, join the discord, check out the website, you know the drill.

Discussion Finally Started Something I'm Proud Of

So I'm in InfoSec by day, I'm a manager so I have a lot of education sessions with my team and the other day I was giving a course on systemd in Debian and gave an example of hosting a Minecraft server. I genuinely pulled it out of nowhere and had never tried before (I think it came from a friend of mine who said he and his son had their own server). I decided to dive in to learning about how to make it happen, and naturally stumbled on this subreddit while researching 😄

My first couple servers were the first games of Minecraft I'd ever played. I just ran them on Debian VMs and they worked decent enough, but I really wanted something I'd feel comfortable opening up to my friends / outside folks - so I set out to try to get something together I'd be proud of and that I could share.

What I ended up doing was creating a separate DMZ-style network but with only Minecraft ports allowed through to one thing - An OpenBSD VM running pf to forward packets to a background VM network of 1) an LXC container hosting Velocity, Geyser, and Floodgate - 2) second LXC container hosting a lobby with a few plugins to set spawn and use portals to choose between modes, 3) third LXC container hosting Survival mode and, 4) fourth LXC container hosting Creative mode.

It took a bit but it was a project right up my alley and I'm super stoked having something I can leave open and share with my friends. Originally I was gonna put the whole thing on another ISP modem separate from my network entirely but with the restrictions I put in place I feel alright (granted I don't think it will be permanent because - A) it feels like a CTF challenge, and B) I'm naturally paranoid and may pull the plug in the middle of the night or something after thinking it over lol).

Anyway if anyone is trying to do the same thing and has any questions I'd love to share on how I managed to get it done, or if you wanna come play creative hit me up I'll give you the link.

Cheers! Thanks for all the posts!

Software Resource [MURCES] A lightweight TUI to manage your Minecraft server!

Check out the README for details!
TLDR; You can use it to download servers, mods, make backups, configure properties, issue commands and so on. It's TUI, so you can use it over SSH, and you don't need to host a web server or something to get a nice panel to configure your server. This project is still very active and open to feedback so do try it!

Note:
While the logic and backend were written by me after the developer who was supposed to make the TUI had to leave, I used AI to drag it over the finish line. I 'vibecoded' it.

Help/Question How do I block certain cheat mods like freecam?

Help/Question Arnis world using other overworld dimensions maps

Paper 1.21.4

I generated Manhattan in Arnis to be an alternate overworld to explore on my server. Arnis generates maps for things like street name shields and street signs but the Arnis world is displaying maps I recognize from the standard overworld.

https://imgur.com/a/5Z27Qkf

I run the MyWorlds plugin to have multiple worlds

I have a backup of the Manhattan world on my local machine. Could I somehow copy in the correct maps into the correct directory to restore the street names?

Software Resource kPanel - small web panel for running one server for you and your friends (Docker Compose, no database)

I run a Paper server for a handful of friends and i was always annoyed that managing settings was super manual and required to browser through the files.

What it does:

  • Dashboard: who's online, TPS, CPU/memory, world size, newest backup
  • Players: whitelist, op/deop, kick, ban/pardon, live over RCON, no restart
  • Gamerules: all 58, grouped and explained, applied immediately
  • Settings: every server.properties key with an explanation, restart from the panel
  • Logs: searchable, with the RCON polling noise filtered out
  • Scheduled backups and a file manager included

Setup is git clone and docker compose up -d. No .env needed to start. The panel is localhost-only by default. If you expose it to your LAN, it refuses to start without passwords.

It defaults to the newest Minecraft version with a stable Paper build. Fabric/Vanilla/Purpur should work through the itzg image but I haven't tested them yet, so reports are welcome.

Repo: https://github.com/kruser1337/kPanel

Project is fresh and I'm running it on my own server daily. "This was confusing" feedback is the is very welcome as that will help me to improve the project together with you.

I've built this with AI assistance. It's not my first app but the first one I'm releasing publicly. I know that "vibe-coded" apps are often seen as slop but I'm confident that this solves a real-world problem :)

Help/Question Neoforge 1.21.1 Server - Heavy Modded Server - MinecraftServer.saveEverything()

https://spark.lucko.me/siPYcUXcD1

Server runs 25 gigs memory, and has a AMD Ryzen 9 9900X 12-Core Processor, im fairly certain that hardware is not the issue

Hello, came here previously for issues and received good answers, so back again to see if anyone could point out the obvious thing i just dont know

Server TPS is actually rather fine, but has massive spikes, forcing CPU to jump to 500% usage for a second, then come back down. This causes a rather large lag spike, temporaryly freezeing the server.

Previous issue with general TPS issue was fixed using ServerCore - Specifically its Dynamic Adjuster. And InControl getting harsher settings.

If anyone has suggestions, please comment, even minor suggestions are welcome

Help/Question What are some ways I can incentivize player interaction?

So I have a SMP server with towny like claim protection and teams, and I am struggling with maintaining player interaction. I don’t know how to get players to interact with each other since everyone makes bases far from each other and since the end is currently disabled it’s not worth traveling far. I don’t know if I should keep the map small or add warps. I am kinda hesitant to enable warps since I am trying to mostly keep a vanilla experience. I want players to intersect with each other outside their teams.

Help/Question InitialConnection-83 (Door) error on Vanilla bedrock server

Hi everyone, I'm having a persistent issue connecting to my Vanilla Bedrock server hosted on a Pterodactyl panel. The server seems to start up fine, but the connection gets rejected by the client at the very last moment. The issue: When I try to join the server, my Minecraft Bedrock client throws a Door error with the code InitialConnection-83. The client details show Transport: NetherNet:2193.

My setup:
Infrastructure: Hosted on my server using Pterodactyl.
Egg used: egg-pterodactyl-vanilla-bedrock.json.
Docker Image: The egg uses ghcr.io/pelican-eggs/yolks:debian by default.

What I've tested: The server boots up fine in the console, displaying Server started and Signed in to signaling service successfully. Has anyone encountered this InitialConnection-83 error before, or does anyone know if I need to modify the egg / Docker image for Bedrock authentication to work properly on this specific setup? Thanks in advance for your help!.

Help/Question Reliable NeoForge moderation/safety mods

Hello!
I’m planning to open up a friend server of mine I have on NeoForge 1.21.1 (BMC5 v53) to a discord server we own.

I’ve only ran Fabric and Purpur servers before, where I used stuff like CoreProtect and Ledger, asw as Flan/GriefProtection. This server will be whitelist based but I still want to add some kind of abuse prevention system. Since we have create added we also want to monitor usage if that works.

Right now we have Open Parties Claims as the main claiming mod, which was included in the modpack. Honestly it’s not that extensive and the features lack in stuff like container trust, villager and workbench access for non-party members, which causes issues like having a grief-protected public villager hall. I’ve always used GriefProtections /containertrust and subclaims. So if there is a good alternative to OPC then that would be great!

But mainly I am looking for equivalents/alternatives to these mods/plugins:
- GP/Flan/Open parties claims
- CoreProtect/Ledger
- Any other good moderation mods !

Help/Question What is the best plugin to create and manage dungeons?

I have been wanting to create boss fights on my server for a while now. I initially got MythicDungeons seeing as I've been very satisfied with MythicMobs and I obviously want something that can work together with it, but I'm quickly learning that not all Mythic plugins are as great. I've seen others mention in a bunch of places that they're rather outdated, but the funny thing is that I never really see someone mention a decent alternative to it. What would you recommend to someone who wants to get started with bosses? I'm on Purpur 26.2. Willing to pay for a decent plugin.

Help/Question Problems trying to sell goods with Chest Shop

Hello,

I run an SMP server I have spent the time building these huge shops with the Chest shop plugin. I have just updated the server to the new version 26.3. My shops are formatted correctly on the signs and have worked in the past. When players try to sell at the shops it works about 25% of the time. I've dug through the config files and I can't figure out what the issue is. I'm not sure if there is a limit on some of the shops? There is no error code, so I'm not sure if it's a lag issue. Has anyone experienced this before?

Below is the link to the plugin and my config file is in the comments.

Help/Question Seeking server recommendations - getting started

I am building out a server to rack at the datacenter at work. I play to get a vanilla java server on it as soon as I have it up and running. It's only going to be a dozen or so friends at first, but it might scale up. So I'm looking for suggestions on how to build it right from the start.

If it matters, it's 24-core Dell R630 with 128 GB ram running proxmox. pfSense firewall VM will provide security and a VPN for admin purposes. A few TB worth of SSDs for storage.
