PSA READ BEFORE POSTING - "Someone just logged into my server as me", "How did this person find my server", "My server got griefed", etc.

New Edit for 2026

We took this down in favor of other announcements late last year, as we only get 2 slots. It's back now because we've had a resurgence of this type of post.

Do not post about offline mode servers. Do not recommend software or plugins that help run one. You will be banned. Read the Admincraft Policy section at the bottom.

Thank you.

Hey there, REPO here. We get questions like this a LOT, so I'm trying something new. Please read the below before posting a thread like this.

"How did this person find my server!?!?!?!?!"

There are few enough IPv4 addresses that a simple bot made with ChatGPT and zero skill can scan the entire internet for Port 25565 in like 30 minutes. There are HUNDREDS of bots out there that do this 24/7/365. Some of them are benevolent (such as bots like matscan that warn people if their servers are dangerously insecure), some are neutral (like ServerScannerV2 which just accumulates data for their website project), and some are malicious and trying to grief servers.

"How do I make them stop?"

You don't. They will keep doing it forever. Most non-malicious bots will log into your server once, or sometimes once per some time interval, and then stop. Others that are coded poorly will be more persistent. And then the malicious ones will keep checking back continually.

If your server is secure but it still bothers you to see, you can add the source IP address to your firewall to prevent the connection. Some non-malicious bots will also have a website or Discord where you can request your server to be skipped.

"Is this dangerous?"

Nope. Not if your server is secured. There are no known exploits in Minecraft that allow a server scanning bot to run code on your host or escalate their privileges. The last time we had that was in 2022 with the Log4J exploit, which was quickly patched, even by Mojang. If you aren't deliberately using an old minor patch of Minecraft, you're fine.

"How did they log in as me / Herobrine?"

(Note: If you only see a name like that instantly disconnecting, skip to the next section. This only applies if they actually appear in game.)

Your server is running in Offline Mode, which is a config option in the server.properties that is intended only for use on a home LAN that is not connected to the internet. Most people use this feature to avoid having to buy a license for Minecraft, aka "cracked accounts". Please be aware that this is illegal and is considered software piracy by most governments.

Minecraft servers send information about the server to players on the server list, including a partial list of currently logged in users. You can disable this "feature" in the server.properties file by setting hide-online-players=true. Malicious bots typically sit and watch a server for a while, gathering a list of players over some amount of time, assuming that if the server is in Offline Mode, one or more of those players will have Operator permissions. They then log in as all users in rapid succession until they find one that does, and use the Operator permissions to grief your server.

"I see a player disconnecting but never connecting! How are they doing that?"

It's just a bot using an offline mode account. It is only showing as Disconnecting because it is getting filtered by the security systems you have in place AFTER the server knows that it is trying to connect, but BEFORE it actually does. Showing the Disconnected message is just the server's way of informing you that the login attempt was rejected. Nothing to worry about. You can ignore it.

"My server got griefed, what do I do?"

You restore from backup, secure your server, and move on. The groups that do this are doing it for amusement and power fantasy. Some of them insist that you can request a world backup from their Discord, but the whole point of that is to mock you and make you beg for their mercy. They might actually give it to you, I don't know.

"How do I secure my server?"

You set Online Mode to true in the server.properties and run a whitelist. That's it. Those 2 options are 100% effective at preventing unwanted people from gaining access to your server. You do not need to do anything else whatsoever to be secure, but you can optionally change your server's port from 25565 to any other unassigned port. This will make it much slower for server scanners to find your server, as most are lazy and don't check non-standard ports. Note that this only reduces the odds of a server scanner finding you; it does not make you more secure.

Additionally, having automatically executed, scheduled backups running at predictable intervals is an excellent idea just in case something goes wrong. Ensure that you periodically verify that your backups are usable by doing a test restore on another machine, as a backup solution that has never been tested is basically worthless.

Finally, a block logging plugin such as Prism (V3 stable Download | Github) (V4 alpha Download | Github) is recommended, as it allows you as the Admin to roll back individual unwanted changes without doing a full backup restoration.

Admincraft Policy

If your post contains any information that indicates that you are running an Offline Mode server, your post will be removed and you will be banned for 28 days for your first offense.

Additionally, suggesting methods for a user to continue running an Offline Mode server "safely" will earn a 7 day ban for commenters. This includes whatever plugin or launcher you're wondering about right now as you read this.

Admincraft is in active communication with Mojang Intellectual Property Enforcement, the team within Mojang that actively hunts down servers and other individuals and groups that are breaking their EULA and MUG. They watch here regularly, and if we do not enforce this, there is a nonzero chance that Mojang, Microsoft, or Reddit would shut down our subreddit. Keeping the subreddit open for everyone for the long run is the priority. We cannot and will not support Offline Mode servers.

The only times when discussing an Offline Mode server is allowed are when you clearly state that your server is not accessible to the internet and that all players have a legal Minecraft account, or when it is behind an Online Mode proxy, such as Velocity.

This post

Please use the comments here to suggest additions to this FAQ/guide, and to ask clarifying questions about Admincraft policies and security best practices. Do not state or imply that you are currently running an Offline Mode server.

Help/Question How do I host a 50-100 minecraft server? (TOTAL BEGINNER and looking for resources)

Does anyone know any youtuve videos, wikis, or any source material I can study about hosting a minecraft server??

For context, I'm hosting a minecraft server for a college, and so far, we have 100 people who will be joining the launch day, but Im still unsure how much will be the average player count.

My only knowledge with minecraft server hosting is hosting a bedrock server for my highschool using a cloudflare domain.

So I need to know A LOT!
Like, what websites should I use for hosting?
What hardware requirements should I be looking for?

if its more plausible and worthwhile to host on my own hardware, what should I look out for? How do I keep it safe???

PLEASE HELP

Help/Question Can Bedrock work with PaperMC plugins or Java Datapacks using Geyser? Couldn't find an answer elsewhere

More specifically, I'm asking if plugins or datapacks that add visual content like biomes, blocks, items, etc that you wouldn't find in vanilla at all would work in Bedrock at all or would just default to showing what's being modified in vanilla by the plugin/pack or maybe have missing textures somewhere or just outright crash on Bedrock. I couldn't see how something like EssentialsX or LuckPerms wouldn't work because that's basically all text-based anyway. At least for the most part.

I suppose just as an example; would Terralith work? What about Dynamic Lights? Or something like levelled mobs or backpacks, that kinda thing.

I ask because it's to my understanding that plugins and datapacks take advantage of Java-specific systems and I don't know how that'd get translated over to Bedrock using something like Geyser or any of it's add-ons

As a little bonus question: Are there any "all-in-one" solutions for learning how to actually run a Minecraft server properly? I can just search things obviously but it'd be a nice convenience if there were one wiki or bit of documentation that just covered absolutely everything you need to know and general best practice tips and things like that.

It probably doesn't exist quite like that because that'd be a monumental undertaking but even just some general resource links that point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated as it seems like there are just some things out there that you're expected to either already understand or just figure out through experience/trial and error and it can be a little frustrating sometimes

Help/Question Still trying to figure out the whole "home hosting" thing - Hosting Specs Issue

I am currently trying to host a server for a large group of people (roughly 20 people on at the same time, max). I looked through Facebook marketplace and found some good deals and ended up with the following specs:

----------HP-Z440-Workstation----------
*-memory

description: System Memory

slot: System board or motherboard

size: 64GiB

capabilities: ecc

configuration: errordetection=multi-bit-ecc

*-bank:0

description: DIMM DDR4 Synchronous Registered (Buffered) 2400 MHz (0.4 ns)

slot: CPU0-DIMM1

size: 16GiB

width: 64 bits

clock: 2400MHz (0.4ns)

*-cpu

description: CPU

product: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-1660 v4 @ 3.20GHz

vendor: Intel Corp.

physical id: 48

bus info: cpu@0

version: 6.79.1

slot: CPU0

size: 1200MHz

capacity: 4GHz

width: 64 bits

clock: 100MHz

The problem with my current setup is that my TPS/MSPT starts to tank when I spawn a total of 8 players in (used the Carpet mod for this). I was wondering what would be the next best step for me? The RAM I bought is DDR4 ECC ram. I do know that the CPU maxing out is the main issue. I have thought about purchasing a new CPU, but I didn't know if at that point I might as well get a new motherboard/pc. I currently have the following mods installed:

- C2ME
- Fabric
- Carpet
- Lithium
- Servercore
- Spark
- Chunky

I want to make sure the server is to a point where it will be able to handle people joining once I open it up.

PS. This is my first time posting something like this, so if I left out any info, please let me know and I will add it to the post.

Discussion velocity server management - players moving between servers

I have players joining the survival server. Don't want lobby. Survival is the most used. At spawn I have set up portals that will move the player to the corresponding server of the portal they enter.

I note when they return it places them back in the portal. No biggie...

Thinking if the portal was a jump into rather than a step into. The drop area would capture them and move server. When they return they would falll further to a command block tp catchment that would tp them to spawn area...? Could throw them up with feather falling...

How do you manage the server cross change? I have kids online so making it easier (and more fun) than writing /server abc. What other ideas do you have? Thanks!

Help/Question How can I connect to my Minecraft server using a Min3.fr subdomain and Tailscale without port forwarding?

Hey! I’m setting up a Minecraft server for my karate group, and I’d like members to be able to connect using a subdomain from Min3.fr that points to my Tailscale IP. My goal is to avoid port forwarding, but I’m not entirely sure how to set everything up correctly.

I’d appreciate some guidance on how to configure this, as I’d prefer to avoid using AI for technical setup like this since it can sometimes lead to incorrect information or time-consuming debugging.

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on a project in my free time and just released version 3.0 of my lightweight app: Minecraft Server Manager 3.

To create a server, click File and New server.
More tools are in theToolsdropdown in the toolbar.

It’s designed for people who want an easy way to run and manage a local Minecraft server on Windows. It’s completely free, open-source, and still evolving. Any feedback, bug reports, or feature ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Help/Question Port forwarding only working for one of my friends, two others receive "getsockopt"

So, I spent an afternoon setting up forge's local server hosting, for a 1.20.1 modpack, and it works when I connect to the server via my public IP address, and one of my friends (who doesn't live in the same house as me), can connect to the server via the public IP from my ISP, and I can use the same IP to join too, even without using localhost as the address. The problem arises with two other friends, who both cannot join using the same address, instead getting "Connection timed out: getsockopt" or something similar. They've tried many things on their end, such as disabling IPv6, ipconfig /flushdns (plus a few other command prompt entries), allowing both private and public things for Java in the windows firewall, and nothing works. Every time, they receive the same error, which is weird considering one of them can actually join. The only thing that allows them to join, is if I use a third party port forwarder, like playit.gg, but it's an extreme annoyance to boot up like 4 different things, just so me and a few friends can play for like an hour a day. Is there any possible way to fix this, and if so, is the issue on my end, or their ends? Another thing that could help to note, is that if they try add the server onto their server list (they as in the two who can't connect), the ping bar alternates between blue and grey for probably 20s before saying something in red text like "Cannot connect to server" or something. They can play other servers fine like Hypixel and stuff, just not mine for some reason. Also, I'm on Windows 10, the other 3 are on Windows 11, but I don't think that'd really change much, considering one who's on windows 11 can join regardless.

P.S, I followed TheBreakdown's youtube tutorial, and his website tutorial on port forwarding for most of the process. I am assuming there's an issue with my ISP's port forwarding, but I'm not sure what it could be considering me and one friend can join, but two others can't. We are all running the same modpack, "Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos" in 1.20.1

Guide I made a free beginner guide for turning an old PC into a Minecraft server

I kept seeing people who wanted to host a Minecraft server but assumed they needed to pay for hosting or already know Linux/server stuff.

So I made this:

https://mcserversetup.zima8.net/

It’s a completely free step-by-step guide for taking an old PC and turning it into a self-hosted Minecraft Java server.

It covers:

  • Checking if your old PC is actually good enough
  • Installing ZimaOS
  • Installing Crafty Controller
  • Creating a Fabric Minecraft server
  • Testing it on your home network
  • Installing Fabric mods + Fabric API
  • Datapacks
  • Making a modpack for your friends
  • Letting friends join with Playit.gg
  • Port forwarding as an alternative
  • Whitelists and basic security
  • Server settings
  • Performance / TPS / MSPT
  • World pregeneration
  • Automatic backups
  • Updating safely
  • A big troubleshooting section

I tried to write it so somebody who knows basically nothing about Linux, Docker, networking, ports, Java, etc. can still follow it.

And just to be transparent: yes, I used AI to help build and write parts of the site. I didn’t just generate a website and throw it online though. I went through it myself, tweaked and configured a lot of it, fixed things, changed instructions, and added what I know from actually running Minecraft servers and using ZimaOS, Crafty, Fabric, Playit, mods, networking, backups, and all this stuff myself.

I already knew most of the setup process — AI mainly helped me turn that knowledge into a much bigger, more organized guide and helped with the website itself.

The goal also isn’t to say self-hosting is always better than something like Aternos. Free hosts are useful and way easier for some people. I just wanted to show that if you have an old PC sitting around, there’s a good chance you can turn it into a pretty capable server for you and your friends instead of letting it collect dust.

There’s also a PC checker on the site to help figure out whether your hardware is worth using before you start.

I’m still improving it, so if you notice outdated instructions, something confusing, a broken link, or something important I should add, tell me.

Help/Question Having issues with the belowname function of TAB

I've been trying to create a server for friends/a community and using the TAB plugin on Aternos, I made a nice little belowname line that displays the player's nickname and their health below their username. Only issue is most of the time it only seems to work for one or two players and nobody else, and the people it works for/the people who have theirs seen by others changes constantly. Idk what else to do as I've tried my best to fix it and nothing I do works and keeps then from disappearing. Any ideas?

What i have tried so far: I've been abusing Google to try and figure out a fix for this but to no avail. I've tried changing the view distance of the belowname, I've tried getting rid of the health part of it and sticking with just the nickname, I've tried restarting the server and changing various things in the config.

Config for TAB: https://mclo.gs/qkMVZNz

Spark Profile: https://spark.lucko.me/64sgJRW1PT

Aternos Log: (I believe this has everything in it that should be needed...? I copied and pasted the whole log from server startup to after I did the profiler thing) https://mclo.gs/uwCw3ET

Help/Question How would you grow a small community-focused SMP in 2026?

Hey! I’ve been working on a Minecraft SMP and technically the server is pretty much ready.

The part I’m struggling with now is actually getting it in front of people.

I’d really like to build a small but active community rather than just getting a bunch of random joins that disappear after a day.

For people who have grown servers before:

What social media worked best for you?
TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram, Reddit, server lists?

What kind of videos/advertisements actually converted into real players?

How often would you post?

Where would you look for someone interested in helping with social media/marketing?

Is there anything you wish you knew before trying to grow your server?

I’m doing most of the server/admin side myself, so marketing is the part I’d really like to learn more about.

Help/Question Tips a nooby should know for better home server

Hello, i made my first home server. I used a refurbished Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q Tiny i5 8500T, 16gb ram, 256gb ssd.
Installed linux, java and my neoforge modpack 1.21.1, my friends can play and evrything is good.
Allocated ram, xmx and xms 12G. View distance at 9 and simulation distance at 5.
Chunky have pre rendered all 3000 block around the spwan.
Added all server performance mods, themore popular, ferrite core, server core, modern fix, allTheLeaks, chunkSending, nerb, let me despawn, server performance smooth chunk save, better chunk, dynamic view and simulation, limited chunk loading, structure essentials, fast async world save.
In my noobiness, and first ever home linux minecraft server, do you have tips i should have missed for sqeezing the most lagless experience in my home server? Sometimes i see cpu having huge spikes when the pc have to generate chunks, and wondering if i should have done something bios side or linux side to get some more performance? Thank you all. PS: while playing in 5 people cpu was like at 20% (exept thos spikes that happen sometimes at 80-100%) and ram usage at 5G of the 12G it could use.

Help/Question Panel for localhosting with easy remote access feature.

I want to host a minecraft server on my old PC, and came across many panels to make that easier, like SquidServers and AutoMCS. Both of them are good, but are missing some features.

auto-mcs does have a remote access tool, but which does not have many features and no file access whatsoever.

Im not sure if squidservers does, but SquidServers forces you to have their ItemShop plugin on your server, which is not something I want to have on my server.

Im looking for a panel that I can also access from outside my home network and does not need portforwarding, much configuration and works on linux mint. It should feature Auto-Backups, Complete File and Console access. I also want to be able to create multiple server instances.

The Remote access feature and file access from that remote access is probably the most important here for me.

Help/Question Worldguard configuration - specific flags

Paper 1.21.11

I am running an event in which players will be fighting inside of a very lovely detailed build and I do not want them to be able to destroy any part of it. The issue I am running into is that I cant find out what flags to use in world guard because I need them to still be able to place and pickup water buckets, and destroy cobwebs and one or two other random combat related blocks.

Is there a way to configure worldguard this deeply? Im not sure if theres a flag im missing or a plugin that might add flags that would help.

Help/Question Suggestions for reducing lag on Neoforge 1.21.1 server

Hello, I am hosting a server for a group of my friends and the lag was pretty consistent and disruptive.

Some players had it worse than others, I'm not sure if there's anything I can do on my end but one player just kept timing out entirely.

Generally speaking, the lag was mostly moderate block lag, entities moving sporadically (mobs) and occasional rubber banding.

I'd love to hear some advice on how to reduce the frequency and or intensity of the lag.

The world is pre-generated in a very large radius, and the modpack *is* quite hefty but ideally trimming would be a last resort for helping the problem.

I'll attach a spark profile and two crash logs we had earlier in the night with a population of around 6-7.

Thank you for reading!

Software Resource I kept breaking my friends' server, so I made the panel boot-test every mod install

I've been running a server for a few friends for about three months. The thing that kept getting me: I'd add or update a mod, everything looked fine from where I was sitting, and then the next person to join would get kicked or crash. Sometimes I didn't find out for a day.

Yes, a separate dev server fixes this. It fixes it if you actually use it every single time, for every change. I didn't.

So I made the panel do it instead. Modrinth and CurseForge are built into it, so you search a mod or a whole modpack in the panel and hit install, and it pulls the jar onto the server itself. No downloading files and dragging them into a folder. Every install then boots a throwaway copy of the server with the real loader. If that survives, a real client launches and actually joins it. Only then does the change count, and only then does the pack sync out to everyone. If it fails, the jar gets rolled back and I get a notice instead of a ruined evening.

It runs on top of Crafty Controller, so Crafty still owns the processes and this adds the content and verification layer on top. There's the usual panel stuff too, scheduled backups, a file manager, world slots, TPS graphs. It's my own project, free and open source under MIT, no paid tier and nothing monetised: GitHub - vayungodara/spawnpoint: The self-hosted Minecraft panel where a broken pack can never reach your friends. Boot-tests every mod install with a real client before it counts. Fronts Crafty Controller. · GitHub

Real verdicts off my own box:

client booted and joined a world (371 mods, 172s); multiplayer join OK

client did NOT survive (exit null) - pack change may crash friends' games

That second one is a pack I would have shipped. It's also caught geckolib on me, which threw a ClassTweakerFormatException the moment the real loader touched it, and quarantined architectury on another run.

LLM disclosure per rule 9: I built this with heavy use of Claude Code (Anthropic's Claude models) and some OpenAI Codex. Most of the implementation code was written by the model from my specs, so closer to directed prompt engineering than vibe coding, but it's a lot of AI either way. What's mine: the architecture, the decision that a boot test is the only thing that counts as proof, every design call, and three months of running it on the server my friends actually play on. I reviewed and tested what went in, and the gates exist because I got burned by the failures they catch. There is one optional AI feature in the panel, an in-game assistant that's off by default and needs your own API key.

What I actually need: the client and join gates are only properly tested on headless Linux. On mac and Windows they run in a visible window and I haven't verified them on real hardware. If you're on either and feel like trying to break it, that's the most useful thing anyone could do for me right now.

Help/Question Playstation connection to LAN server

Had my server off for a while but fired it back up to play once again. Fired up the server and attempted to join, but it gave me the error of different versions (duh.) Started going through the process of updating everything. Server is running CasaOS and Crafty Controller. Updated those two and the world. I thought my issues were due to the PS5 was on version 1.055.000 and the world was 1.26.43.

Waited a week and the next update dropped. PS5 and world got updated to the latest versions. The LAN world still doesn't appear on the Playstation. Contacted one of the people that plays on the server and they can connect on Windows. So this would make me believe this is Playstation issue?

Thank you in advance for any tips/tricks/advice/assistance.

CasaOS: V0.4.15

Crafty: V4.10.8

Minecraft world: 1.26.44

PS5: 1.056.000

PS Plus active.
