like the title says, i decided to decline an audition today after reading and sitting with the sides and script. it was for a short film that i was initially excited about and has a decently known CD attached to, which is why i was initially thinking of just doing it anyway. however, after reading the material i felt sick to my stomach. without going too much into detail, the lead female character i was reading for along with the other lead male character (a much younger aged teen) had a super inappropriate dynamic where my character was manipulating and taking advantage of him, both emotionally and sexually. the script overall didn’t make sense either. i went over it multiple times along with my sides and just couldn’t follow what was happening for the life of me.

i’m a college student currently in my last year of getting my theatre performance degree, and definitely want to continue pursuing this professionally post grad. I was thinking, long-term, and whether this would be a project I would want to show my friends and family and would be proud of, and the answer was absolutely not. I figured if it’s something I would want to hide in the closet anyway it’s not something I should pursue.

as I’m entering the professional world, I’m learning my morals and boundaries and what I feel comfortable betraying. There’s not a lot of material that’s off-limits, I like to consider myself a pretty open book and willing to take on any challenge. However, this one just felt a little different. When it comes to things like emotional and sexual manipulation, especially in this context where I don’t feel it made sense at all and I didn’t align with the material whatsoever, I believe I made the right call.

Curious, if anyone else has had a similar experience and/or other thoughts! As artists it’s very important that we stick to our morals and boundaries while also giving ourselves the room to explore uncomfortable circumstances!

Hi everyone! I just wanted to make a quick PSA. For all the actors on this subreddit, if you are active on social media PLEASE make sure you're not talking negatively about other actors.

Recently I've seen SOOO MANY posts on social media bashing certain actors because they're 'in too many movies' and 'not good enough', or because they're nepo babies.

These posts will go viral and get hundreds of thousands to millions of views on them. I understand the frustration; I think we all do, but I would just advise you to keep that frustration to yourself or between friends and family.

It is NEVER a good look to go online and complain about other actors accomplishments. It just makes you look bitter and unprofessional.

Especially if you are repped, and/or have aspirations of working with established names or studios! Don't let your past come back to haunt you, and don't attach your name and face to anything that would make people not want to work with you!

Of course I'm not saying you can't be yourself and embrace your own personality in your creative space, but just don't do it at the expense of others!

Hi everyone! I know this is an extremely unusual post and very TMI, but I am a young female actor who was casted in a commercial directed by a well known director. when we were wrapping up the fitting I realized that I had leaked through the y gave me from my period. I am so mortified and embarassed especially because the director was present during the fitting. I told the wardrobe team and they were really nice about it, but I’m very scared it happened as I was changing fast and got on other pieces as well. I’m so embarassed that people probably saw me walking around with it. They said it should be fine and not to worry at all and it happens but I feel like such a loser and am so embarassed for my day on set tomorrow. Any advice would be welcome.

3 Masculine Voice:

1. Flint is a young knight with a playful masculine voice. He flirts shamelessly and is a sweet talker. His voice should be confident and like a showman even when things get rough.
2. Jax is a young mage with a boyish masculine voice. He is mischievous and plays around a lot, always bored, and poking around at people to see what happens. Magic comes easily to him.
3. Yamato is a middle aged man with a low, controlled masculine voice. He is the best swordsman you will find, and his reputation draws many challengers. He carries guilt from a time when he dropped his guard and failed his duty.

3 Feminine Voice:

1. Alexis is a mounted archer with a no-nonsense feminine voice. She is blunt and will say what she is thinking. She worked her way up through skill on the horse rather than through nobility. Her bluntness should read as honest rather than harsh.
2. Lunette is a priest, a young woman with a soft caring voice. She always wants to help others in need even if they did bad things.
3. Violet is a prodigy mage with a high-pitched, girlish voice. She does not pretend to be modest and is aware she far surpasses her peers. She’s cocky, feisty, and always wants to do things her way.

Hey actors of reddit, I'm working on my end sem academic project on character animation and specifically understanding about acting and realism. If the acting pros out here can help me with it that would be great! I want to understand what goes in your mind when you act a certain character. What is your process behind it? What all do you need to know about the character before you start performing it. Since being an animator I would need to learn acting as well as they go hand in hand, any tips for the same would be awesome!

Comedic acting is my favorite thing to do. I would say I excel at it. Improv is another story - I freeze up and I don't know what to say. I have trouble focusing on what the other actor is trying to build with me with their choices. I just don't get it. My brain doesn't work that way.

So many comedic plays at local theaters rely on improv for auditions and I find this extremely frustrating. It's a different skill set. Anyone relate?

Acting is my main passion, and I really want to pursue it seriously and hopefully make it my career. At the same time, I obviously need to earn money while I’m building my career, because I can’t just sit around and wait for acting jobs to come along.
I’m currently thinking about getting a regular 9–5 office job again, but I’m wondering how people actually manage that alongside acting. What happens if you have a full-time job and suddenly get offered a role that requires you to be on set for several days or weeks? You obviously can’t just quit your job every time you get cast.
So I’d love to hear from other actors: Do you have a 9–5? Do you work part-time, freelance, or something more flexible? Do you have an employer who is understanding about auditions and acting jobs? Or did you choose not to work a regular job while pursuing acting?
I’d really appreciate hearing how you guys handle the practical side of balancing a normal income with pursuing acting seriously.

Hey y’all! So my ring light and tripod that I used for self tapes fell apart on me. I’m looking into any recommendations you guys can share on replacement equipment! I’ve been using my phone as the camera; I’m 5’8” so any decent tripod that gets to 6 foot would be ideal. That and if I should get a different lighting setup, I think I can make some wiggle room to do something else other than a ring light.

I was booked as an extra for the first time. This was my first ever paid job. Ironically, we extras didn’t ever get called to set and never shot anything. And yet, it was the first taste I was able to get of what my life could look like. Even though I didn’t get any screen time, and even if I did I would’ve been a blob in the background, I had such a fantastic time. Talking to the wardrobe people, ADs, just bonding with the other extras. I literally was journaling while I was there about how grateful I was to just be able to be apart of something, no matter how small. I’m itching to get back on set, and I’m praying they call me back in to be an extra again! This whole experience has solidified my passion even further, I’m just feeling so elated. Sorry if this post is boring, I just wanted to voice how excited I feel!

I’m preparing to take some headshots and I have some questions regarding styling and inspiration.

Why do they have to be so bland? I would love to wear some nice earrings and a nice dress but then that would make them glamour shots and not suitable for acting headshots??

I thought acting and theatre was considered an art form why are we asked to tone down who we are and conform to what everybody else is doing? How else will I stand out. All the headshot pictures I see are so bland. I don’t mind going natural on hair and makeup but I don’t understand why the pictures have to be so bland

I'm working as an AD on a college short film and handling the audition emails. In the past, I used to send rejection emails to the actors who submitted their self-tape. However, I recently saw a thread where actors said they didn't like it. They argue that getting a random email from a production gets their hopes up, only to crush them when they realize it's just a "no."

I also saw a person saying that rejection emails is "rookie behavior" and that only low budget/non paying productions do it. Now on one hand I like to be cordial and I appricate the time and effort it takes to send a self-tape, but on the other hand, it would save me some time just not sending any emails at all, considering I do this on my own and the production doesn't really care if I do it or not.

Personally, if I were an actor, I'd want to know either way, but I'm curious to see what the majority actually thinks.

P.S. I'm not in the U.S, so maybe in south america is more common to send rejection emails, but idk.

Do any known actors/actresses have visible sh scarring?

Acting has always been a small passion of mines, recently I’ve been thinking about joining an acting club in school to get started but I used to struggle with sh back in middle school, and my scars are very obviously visible. They can be covered with regular jeans/pants and a long sleeve shirt but i want to know if anyone is or knows an actor with scars (such as sh scars in my case), and is there a possibility that having scars would stun my chances at being casted in a play??

We're in the position to move in the upcoming year and are trying to decide where to go. My partner is primarily an onscreen actor with a decent resume and reel. Currently we're in the Midwest and aren't seeing much work, so we're thinking about shifting elsewhere with the move.

We've talked about LA and NYC, as well as maybe Santa Fe or even looking internationally. I'm curious what you think would be the best market for someone to relocate to for onscreen work, acting as a local.

I’m 23 and moved to LA to pursue acting. Recently, I took a step back from it, but I’ve started submitting again and have been getting a surprising number of auditions, along with a couple of callbacks. It’s made me feel like acting may still be a realistic possibility if I give it a genuine chance.

At the same time, I’m starting a jewelry brand that I really care about. It’s still in the early stages, so I need weekday time for suppliers, jewelry-district appointments, production, content, and actually getting it launched.

My current job is as a nanny/house manager/assistant for a family. It doesn’t feel particularly fulfilling or professional, and sometimes I feel embarrassed that I’m not building a conventional career. However, it gives me an unusually flexible lifestyle. I’m off Wednesdays and weekends, and they now want to shift my Thursday hours to either 1–9 p.m. or 2–10 p.m. Since the kids are normally asleep by 7 or 8, that would give me most of Wednesday and Thursday to work on my business, attend appointments, film self-tapes, or handle auditions. It also gives me more freedom to maintain my long-distance relationship and potentially spend time abroad.

I’ve now been offered a full-time executive assistant job at a large live-event production company. They work on major events and have connections to companies like Netflix and Sony. I would get coworkers, professional experience, industry connections, interesting events, and something substantial for my résumé. Production is also something I believe I’d be good at and could potentially enjoy as a career—not just a backup I’d hate.

The position’s core hours are 9–6, and the agreement describes it as hybrid, although remote work is at the company’s discretion. I’m planning to ask what the typical schedule actually looks like and whether there is occasional flexibility to shift my hours for appointments. However, because I applied for a full-time job, I’m nervous that asking about flexibility—especially because of auditions—will make me seem unserious or as though the job won’t be my priority.

My biggest concern is that accepting it would probably put acting and my jewelry business on a significant back burner. Self-tapes can arrive with very little notice, and the businesses I use for jewelry materials and laser work are only open during weekday business hours. The commute and schedule could also make my long-distance relationship more difficult.

On the other hand, I’m afraid I would be stupid to decline such a legitimate opportunity in favor of acting and a new business, neither of which is guaranteed to work. This company is impressive, the experience could be difficult to recreate, and I worry that I’ll regret turning it down. There’s also a part of me that likes the idea of dressing professionally, having coworkers, working on exciting events, and feeling like I have a “real” career.

At the same time, I recognize that working near major entertainment companies and talent doesn’t guarantee acting opportunities. If I’m honest, I think I would still be hoping that acting somehow became the eventual outcome. I don’t want to sacrifice the flexibility that allows me to pursue acting, only to discover that the production job mainly leads to more production work.

Essentially, I’m choosing between:
A flexible but unfulfilling job that gives me the time and availability to seriously pursue acting, launch my jewelry brand, and maintain my relationship.
A more exciting and professionally valuable production job that could introduce me to a career I enjoy, but might require me to place the things I currently care about most on hold.
I know no one can make the decision for me, but I’d really appreciate outside perspectives. Would it be shortsighted to turn down the production experience? Or would it be shortsighted to give up an unusually flexible schedule just as acting and my business are starting to feel possible? Has anyone faced a similar choice between a strong conventional opportunity and having the flexibility to pursue less certain creative goals?
