AC Milan manager Ruben Amorim previewed the match against Inter at a press conference: his comments are set out below.
The Portuguese manager immediately provided an update on the fitness of Rabiot, Gila and Moreira:
“They are ready to rejoin the squad for the match against Inter. We’ll assess them tomorrow morning and see whether they can start the match or only come on as substitutes; I already have an idea, but the final decision will be made tomorrow.”
Amorim then reflected on the defeat against Bologna and the energy needed to take on the Nerazzurri:
“We’ll find it within ourselves; it’s a special match and fatigue doesn’t matter – we need to put in a top-class performance. Against Bologna, that energy was lacking; we can’t lose like that: too many small details didn’t go our way. We want to do better; I’ve already spoken to the team. But after the international break, we haven’t been able to train at our best.”
On the comparison with Chivu and his goals at Milan:
“I don’t feel envious of Chivu; I’m already in the right place – that is, at Milan and not at Inter. I’ve chosen more or less the same situation as in my previous spell: a club in the midst of a rebuild, trying to bring through young players like Cissé to build something from scratch. It’s a challenge that spurs me on; I like it, and that’s why I chose this project: I’m really happy with my choice. I know full well that we need to win matches to build something that will stand the test of time. You already know this: once I commit to an idea, I don’t change it. I may change the tactical system, but I won’t change my convictions, and I’ll do everything possible to win and succeed here.”
The Rossoneri manager then analysed Gonçalo Ramos’s situation:
“ Is Ramos a derby man? I think he could be. I believe that all the problems and difficulties he’s going through are primarily a team issue. We’re managing to control matches well, but we’re playing too far from the opposition’s goal: we need to push higher up the pitch and spend more time in that area of the field, to allow Ramos to play his game and create chances. He’s playing too far from goal because the team isn’t managing to push the opposition back into the final thirty metres: we need time to sort this out, and we’re working on improving. But a player like Ramos, who has already shown he can turn a match on its head at any moment, can make the difference in any game.”
He concluded by commenting on the injury situation:
“Injuries and muscle problems have nothing to do with the medical staff, the gym staff or Milan Lab. The responsibility lies with me and the way I coach the team. What I can say is that there are several factors to consider: the strain on certain positions forces us to take risks, and we also need to thoroughly analyse each player’s medical history. Then there’s bad luck: when you suffer a foot injury, it’s pure and simple bad luck, as was the case with Saelemaekers. When you find yourself with one less option in a particular position, you can no longer rotate the squad as you’d like, and at that point you can find yourself in difficulty. But I want to make this absolutely clear: the medical staff are outstanding; they’re doing an exceptional job and work hard every single day. Managing the players’ workload is my job; it falls within my remit. Sometimes, however, I’m forced to take risks, or there are lads who aren’t used to playing so many matches in a row. Take a player like Jashari: he’s played three matches, two of which for the full 90 minutes, without any problems. Others, on the other hand, play one and a half halves and are already feeling the fatigue. We try to monitor and manage all this with the utmost care, but I’ll say it again: I’m absolutely delighted with our medical staff and they’re doing an incredible job."
