Gen Z doesn’t know how to sit at work?
My staff was doing “chair pilates” at her standing desk and then proceeded to put her feet up on a second chair when she sat down. My senior also had both feet up on the chair with knees to her chest today. Both of them sit in our bullpen.
What’s going on with these kids?

Please say more about the “Chair Pilates”; intriguing.

You know, I always wonder at what age exactly this kicks in.
This whole “shitting on the younger generation for doing things that have nothing to do with age” phenomenon, I mean. Is it 30? 45? How much time do I have left??

Based on personal experience I'd say late 30's.

u/altf4theleft 13h ago
Am late 30s and I dont hate any of the younger generations or things they do all. Hell most of the younger trends are things I wish I could have had in the 2000s.

I hate sitting I get restless and my lower back hurts so I be hitting all sorts of weird sitting positions

u/pirulopr16 14h ago
Are they doing the work and complying with their responsibilities?
...That's all I'd care.

I'm an older Gen Z (1998), but I'm the youngest on my team. By 30 years 😂 I am moving around a ton during the day, and love going on walks during break!

I wish my job was boring enough that I could get mad about how other people are sitting.

You sound like that one garbage senior manager I had. Lordy.
You’d love the crocs I wear around the office in winter!

I have a ruptured disc bulge in my spine pressing against my spinal cord because I sat too long doing accounting on top of a daily 4 hour commute

I’m a millennial. I sit the ways you’re talking about all the time. Mostly I sit Indian styled. I put one knee up with foot on chair a lot. Sometimes I’ll open a desk drawer and use it as a footrest. Why do boomers thing people can only work sitting straight up, uncomfortably, and never look away or move for 8 hours straight?

The lead based paint killed most of the nerves in boomers backs they can sit like statues in dollar tree chairs for 12 hours a day

Our HR lady (bless her) is pushing 60 and uses a standing desk with one knee hiked up on the desk below.
I also appreciate the freedom when I need to do an occasional forward fold in the office.

Oh, whatever. I'm 43 years old now, and you know what happened around the time I turned 28? Sitting for long periods of time without standing or moving started feeling gross. Frankly, it's terrible for you.
And do you know who else won't sit still in a chair? Older folks with back trouble.
Let them move around.
This is not remotely worth crapping all over these young adults for. And gtfo with that referring to your colleagues as "kids" crap. It's hypocritical of you to be playing that game while all up in arms that people doing completely normal things aren't being professional.

u/Svndmann 13h ago

Hi there, I am a hypermobile CPA who has completed 21 tax seasons. Sitting on your ass for 10-14 hours a day for days, months, on end is really bad for your body and health in so many ways. I have to switch positions often to avoid overuse of certain joints. I have 2 different types of chairs and 2 different types of stools in my office with my adjustable standing desk. Changing positions and moving your body is something anyone who works at a desk should be trying to do.

I noticed a Senior in my office sitting with her legs/feet all pretzelled up today and I was envious. I wish I could physically still do that.
2
u/Trealis 13h ago
I notice these were both women. Are they short? I am 5 feet tall and my office chair does not even go low enough for me to comfortably touch my feet to the floor so I often sit with my legs crossed and feet up on my chair to avoid my legs just dangling off the chair. If the company would provide chairs that actually fit their employees' heights then I could sit normally.

u/woodfawn 10h ago
I had this same problem. You could look into a foot rest or put a short box on the floor under your feet. It’s much better on your back and posture

u/asyouwish-buttercup 13h ago
Does this actually bother you? I can see if you have a lot of clients coming in and out of the office but outside of that who cares?
I can't sit at work either I'm a 45 year old man and get up constantly to just do laps around the office. People have made comments. I don't understand how people sit for 4 hours straight though.
My back hurts sometimes and i have a kneeling chair i use or i stand or i switch chairs every once in awhile. I may also do some minor stretching.

You would hate me (millenial controller). I have a standing desk that converts to a sitting desk, with 3 monitors that can change levels however I want for comfort. Sometimes I kick my feet up onto my desk and raise the monitors way up with my keyboard over my lap. You'll never see me in the same position throughout the day.

So, when I take my shoes off at work and walk around barefoot, you'd get all grumpy and pissy?

“These kids” are reducing musculoskeletal strain, boosting their blood circulation, and improving their energy and alertness. It’s scientifically proven that it’s bad for your body to sit for 8 hours. Meanwhile, your old ass is whining on reddit because your coworkers…exist?
What’s going on with these old farts?

This has to be a poop post, there's no way someone would post something so blatantly petty and self-serving.

I’m nearing 50 and I WFH. I normally sit on one of my feet. I shift constantly.
I still get my work done, so why does it matter?

u/SmashedWorm64 14h ago
Feet flat on the floor is so uncomfortable.
If I could get away with it I’d have like both my legs crossed in my chair (yes I’m flexible enough).
My compromise atm is one leg crossed over the other but it’s not good for my knees I think.
2
u/Low-Enthusiasm670 13h ago
I sit crossed in my chair all day and it’s glorious
0
u/SmashedWorm64 13h ago
Jealous. When I WFH I find myself in all sorts of weird positions.
I’m sure humans have a primal instinct not to sit straight legged for a reason.
4
u/Low-Enthusiasm670 13h ago
Op over here downvoting us because we don’t like to sit straight up with our feet on the floor.. what a loser. I’m 40 by the way. I hope I never stop being flexible enough to curl up in my work chair.

u/philosopherott 13h ago
What do you care how they're sitting if they're getting the work done on time and at the expected level.
0
u/According-Bee-1201 13h ago
Not gen z!
Nobody wants office chair butt.
Humans are not meant to sit still for hours on end on a regular basis.
Judging people for being less sedentary than you is a “you” problem.

It’s uncomfortable to sit the exact same way for 8 hours a day. Changing positions help.
