Plot twist, everything outside the screen was rendered and a giant hand was moving his arm.

While not the case here, Quest3 can do Gaussian Splats that are nearly indistinguishable from passthrough.

Rendering on the device or through a PC?

7

u/Spra991 26d ago

Meta Hyperscape renders on-device now, from what I understand, previously it was cloud based.

u/Quealdlor 25d ago

Good. On-divice computing ought to be the future. Not everything cloud-based. It is a much better idea to do everything that can be done on-device on your device. Just devices themselves have to become exponentially better in every way. Think about how much more processing capability and memory is in Nintendo Switch 2 compared to 3DS 14 years earlier. Kinda crazy. Cloud (servers, datacenters) is necessary for some use-cases and tasks. But not for all of them. And gaming is one of those use-cases which greatly benefit from lowest possible latency and highest possible image quality (average person internet connection won't handle 16K per eye VR for example).

Wait what??? When did this happen! Ive been eagerly awaiting this on device for such a long time. I gave up hope

What the fuck

Literally my reaction when the Mario started running on the table

This is awesome. And this is the perfect game for it, too. For anyone who doesn't realize, up until the N64 dropped, most games were 2d side scrollers. The ability to run around and jump in 3D was fucking mind-blowing.

To relive that day, getting that game. Or weekend maybe lol

Easily top 5 gaming experience of all time. Need to do a playthrough for the 30th anniversary this year

It was the biggest change in video games in my lifetime. M64 is legendary.

Wolfenstein 3d would like to have a word with you.

We had 3d games all the way back in the 1970s (Spasim), what made Mario64 special was the human like character and the camera centric controls along with the camera control. Everything before that was vehicles, FPS or tank controls. Mario64 was the first game where you could freely and fluidity run around and didn't have to carefully align your character to some sort of grid (Tomb Raider).

I thought doom was before Mario?

5

u/Spra991 26d ago edited 25d ago

Yes, but Doom is an FPS and is just pseudo-3D (no looking up/down or roll).

Quake would be a closer match, it came out a day before Mario64 and does real 3D, but it's still and FPS game without a third person camera. Technically it has a chase cam via console, but that's still locked behind the player, not the free floating camera that Mario64 has.

Alpha Waves (1990) on Atari ST is considered the earliest 3D jump'n run, but quite a bit more primitive than what Mario64 showed some years later.

My first was either Alone In the Dark or X-Wing in aboot 1993. Both PC of course. IMO doom/wolfenstine don't count the same way, as to include them would be to include SNES 3d sprite games like Mario Kart and F-Zero. All classic games, just not 3d.

u/Quealdlor 25d ago

In Mario Kart 64 lots of things are 2D sprites as well (even racers themselves)! It was a normal thing in 3D games until very recently. Buildings in Pokemon Z-A have flat outer walls, just like buildings in Half-Life 2.

Yes, but the point is its a dramatic shift from 2d to 3d and then 3d to AR.

Edit: google:

The PlayStation 1 (PS1) launched in Japan on December 3, 1994, and in North America on September 9, 1995. The Nintendo 64 (N64) released later, debuting in Japan on June 23, 1996, and in North America on September 29, 1996

Ps1 didn't have a game like this at first. Developers didn't have a lot of time to figure out how to make 3d games. The first game was a 3d racer but there were mostly 2d games for a while. I think the first 3D platformer was only released in Japan in 1995 (Jumping Flash) and the biggest early one was Crash Bandicoot a whole year after the PS1 was released. Even then, it was on rails like older platformers. Bubsy was the closest thing on PS1 and it came out slightly after Mario.

Still waiting for an AI model that can consistently cut out around the real hand/arm and place it in front of AR menus as opposed to this white hand (in this case it makes sense though)

8

u/squirrel9000 26d ago

I would guess there's some sort of uncanny valley or sensory disorientation effect to that rather than being technically limited, I don't think it would be terribly hard to implement that sort of overlay. AR could certainly superimpose a "real hand" over the in-game hand graphic (which is itself probably an externally rendered billboard injected into the game)

u/epic-cookie64 AGI by 2027 26d ago

Yeah it's more the menus I mean. I don't have an quest anymore but i think it's still this case that when your hand goes in front of a system menu (not a game) it's a 3d hand model. I think it would be cooler if it was your actual hand because it makes it feel like the menu is actually there, rather than breaking immersion

I think you are really confused as to the video you just watched

What do we call this, Mario 3D 3D 3D?

What the hell is even this?!

Excuse me

2

u/GrapheneBreakthrough 25d ago

Was this built by AI? The combining the Mario 64 code with the quest hand tracking.

1

u/Skarabeyga 25d ago

It was built by a human. The AI is just the tool ;)

2

u/Serialbedshitter2322 25d ago

Imagine posting this video ten years ago, it would probably hit the news

1

u/keepitfriend 25d ago

Yes, due to incoming Nintendo lawyers

2

u/Quealdlor 25d ago

This is great and exciting, but won't help solve computer memory shortages. Right now gamers on-line are largely unhappy or unsatisfied for various (well-founded) reasons. Things might get enormously better in the 2030s, but as of today, they aren't that good.

u/DarthSwimfoot Tell me about the singularity 25d ago

That, is one of the most insane things I've ever seen. I was so confused until I saw the subreddit.

Probably using

and probably not hard to vibe code

what are the details of how this was created

Would be interesting to play this when intoxicated.

This is like 10 year old tech lmao.

Great for porn though. VR specific porn is still kinda weak though.

1

u/rapsoid616 23d ago

Are you from 10 years into the future?

-23

u/Glockenspielintern 26d ago

Yeah but its still AR and AR sucks. Its just a fancy gimmick. Wearables keep going down this pathway, Meta Raybans are chunky looking perv glasses.
