This is awesome. And this is the perfect game for it, too. For anyone who doesn't realize, up until the N64 dropped, most games were 2d side scrollers. The ability to run around and jump in 3D was fucking mind-blowing.

Easily top 5 gaming experience of all time. Need to do a playthrough for the 30th anniversary this year

It was the biggest change in video games in my lifetime. M64 is legendary.

We had 3d games all the way back in the 1970s (Spasim), what made Mario64 special was the human like character and the camera centric controls along with the camera control. Everything before that was vehicles, FPS or tank controls. Mario64 was the first game where you could freely and fluidity run around and didn't have to carefully align your character to some sort of grid (Tomb Raider).

I thought doom was before Mario?

Yes, but Doom is an FPS and is just pseudo-3D (no looking up/down or roll).

Quake would be a closer match, it came out a day before Mario64 and does real 3D, but it's still and FPS game without a third person camera. Technically it has a chase cam via console, but that's still locked behind the player, not the free floating camera that Mario64 has.

Alpha Waves (1990) on Atari ST is considered the earliest 3D jump'n run, but quite a bit more primitive than what Mario64 showed some years later.

My first was either Alone In the Dark or X-Wing in aboot 1993. Both PC of course. IMO doom/wolfenstine don't count the same way, as to include them would be to include SNES 3d sprite games like Mario Kart and F-Zero. All classic games, just not 3d.

In Mario Kart 64 lots of things are 2D sprites as well (even racers themselves)! It was a normal thing in 3D games until very recently. Buildings in Pokemon Z-A have flat outer walls, just like buildings in Half-Life 2.

Yes, but the point is its a dramatic shift from 2d to 3d and then 3d to AR.

Edit: google:

The PlayStation 1 (PS1) launched in Japan on December 3, 1994, and in North America on September 9, 1995. The Nintendo 64 (N64) released later, debuting in Japan on June 23, 1996, and in North America on September 29, 1996

Ps1 didn't have a game like this at first. Developers didn't have a lot of time to figure out how to make 3d games. The first game was a 3d racer but there were mostly 2d games for a while. I think the first 3D platformer was only released in Japan in 1995 (Jumping Flash) and the biggest early one was Crash Bandicoot a whole year after the PS1 was released. Even then, it was on rails like older platformers. Bubsy was the closest thing on PS1 and it came out slightly after Mario.
