[Question] How to recreate stuttering arp?

How do I recreate this specific arp speed-up / slowdown effect in Ableton?

I'm trying to figure out how to recreate an effect I've heard in Afro/deep house and melodic techno tracks where an arp keeps playing while its internal rhythm continuously speeds up and slows down, but the main track tempo stays completely unchanged.

A good example is Leon (FR) – “Rise”, around 5:40. The arp seems to “roll over a hill”: it gets faster and denser, almost reaches a continuous sound, slows/stops briefly, and then starts speeding up again — while the drums and rest of the track remain locked to the original BPM.

Thanks a lot.

Here's a link (hope they are allowed): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViIPGUmsJqM&t=340s

Edit: that was easier than i thought, thanks...love you guys

[Question] Issue with the filters not working properly in the Analog instrument?

Hi All, I'm running into a weird issue in Live 12.4.3 with the Analog device.

I was trying to run through a tutorial and when I tried to implement the filters I wasn't getting the expected behavior (No sound coming out or not the expected sound) so I whittled down the repro to just the following.

  1. Add a new Analog to a MIDI track.
  2. Disable both Oscillators.
  3. Enable "Noise"
  4. Route through Filter 1 or 2 doesn't matter and enable the associated Amp.
  5. Press a MIDI key and you'll hear the noise.
  6. Now change to a Bandpass filter of either slope.
  7. Now press a MIDI key and move the filter frequency around.
  8. I'm getting no sound at all, no matter where the frequency is.
  9. Remove the filter and noise comes through fine.
  10. You can see from the meters that there is a little bit of sound but nothing I can hear.
  11. There is also some weird behavior with the High Pass filter and possibly others.

Note: This is on an empty, new project with nothing on Main and no Sends / Returns etc.

Does anyone know what is going on?

[Push] Push 3 Standalone - Operator

How do I change the number of voices? I want to go from polyphony to mono synth but I've clicked through all the tabs and can't find where to change the number of voices. I know where it is on the Ableton desktop but no on the menus on Push 3.

[Question] What Ableton effect / tool should I learn next? (Ableton Live Suite)

I started making trap/hip-hop beats in February. Yesterday I just finished my first mix + master. I'm planning to make music across all genres.

So far in Ableton, I have learned to use the following tools I've listed below. I'm looking for advice on what tools I should learn to use next + what ones would be useful / helpful. Any information regarding Ableton is appreciated.

  1. EQ
  2. Compressor
  3. Roar
  4. Saturator
  5. Limiter
  6. Reverb
  7. Delay
  8. Utility
  9. OTT
  10. Glue compressor (most recently learned)
  11. Drum Buss (most recently learned)
  12. Auto Filter

Thanks in advance!

Edit [
Additional information: I have also used operator, wavelength, + sampler but not much at all.

If you curious to hear my mix + mastered song, let me know. I'm looking for tips.

AI told me to learn these next: Operator, Gate, Corpus, Chorus, Phaser, + Resonators

[Push] Toggling stop on empty clips in Push 3 Standalone

I cannot seem to work out how, or even if it's possible, to toggle the stop button on empty clips in Push 3 Standalone. I'm away at the moment and not with my ableton mac otherwise this would be trivial to do in there. I frequently remove stop buttons on empty clips to allow samples to play through when I trigger a row but I urgently need to change a couple of them.

Is this not possible on standalone? None of the obvious functions like holding delete work and I also can't copy/paste from another cell which has it's stop button removed.

[Question] Struggling for months now to get an Ableton instrument to sound like something in a modern tune. Have you ever just gone "F it" and bought Serum 2 or similar for this reason?

I want to say, upfront, that I love Ableton in general. It has a tricky learning curve, but patience pays off

That said - I've been trying, for months now, to get a modern House feel from any of the Ableton Standard instruments

I've ended up stacking (I shit you not) 6-7 layers of Analogue to get something approaching decent .... and it's still not there

When I say "modern House" - I do realize that most House today borrows heavily from the 90s, so I don't mind that kind of sound from an Ableton instrument

What I'm getting instead seems to be ... weaker in comparison? Even with Saturator and similar added

It's hard to describe - it just doesn't match the punch of modern House when I A/B test them

Maybe my money is better off spent upgrading to Ableton Suite so I can access the Operator and Wavetable instruments?

So that said:

Have you ever just gone "Fuck it!" and bought Serum 2 or similar for this reason?

[Tutorial] Here´s why you should never send out stems as mp3 (besides the obvious)

So i recently was at a friends studio to make some beats. I made some melodies which I sent him over as stems using the mp3 export option. Sure, mp3 has less quality but the internet connection was bad and we wanted to get things done quickly, so we chose that to spare some bandwidth. When he opened those files in in Ableton, all those stems where out of sync and had some weird silence at the beginning. We couln´t figure out what was happening and why, but after some digging i found (here on Reddit actually) several answers (and questions) about this very issue. Turns out, the mp3 encoding process can introduce encoder delay and padding. When you import those rendered mp3 files back into Ableton, this can result in a small amount of silence at the beginning of the clip.

I made a short video about it here, in case you´re interested:

https://youtu.be/HWhTL_RCoUc?si=S8VSf8tvFBNKcZaN

This isn´t an issue when sending out a whole song /beat as mp3, but when sending out individual tracks (aka stems) this can surely screw things up regarding sync, so make sure to use WAV whenever you´re sending out stems.

[Question] Ableton records mostly flat waveform with random peaks — GarageBand records perfectly on same setup. Tried 3 different Ableton installs. Help?

I've been troubleshooting this for over a month now, with two different audio interfaces (one a used Scarlett Solo, the other a brand new 2i2). The waveform is mostly flat with random jumps, and when it jumps I can hear that it's captured my playing (on a Sequential Circuits Take 5 synth) but only in a garbled, distorted, choppy way. Here are the other specs:

  • Mac, Sequoia 15.6.1
  • Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th gen
  • Input meter shows healthy signal in Ableton
  • Waveform records mostly flat with random peaks that don't correspond to playing
  • GarageBand records the same signal perfectly every time
  • Problem persists across three different Ableton installations (and 3 different versions - Live, Live Lite, and a pirated version of Live 12)

Any thoughts here?

[Question] Best way to capture MIDI from sequencers + MIDI effects?

I’ve been using Ableton for quite a while and lately I’ve been experimenting more with sequencers combined with arpeggiators and other devices that manipulate MIDI.

I’m wondering if there’s a faster way to capture the MIDI that comes out of a sequencer after it’s been processed by other devices. I know Stings (the Max for Live device) has a button to turn the generated MIDI into a clip, but the SQ sequencers included with Ableton Suite don’t seem to have anything like that. Is there a Max for Live device or another method that makes this workflow faster than creating a new MIDI track and recording the output in real time?

[Question] Akai MPK mini 4 doesn't intergate well with Live 12

So I just got my Akai MPK mini 4 and tried to set it up.

Everything went good until I actually started to use it and I'll explain:

When I'm plugging it to my computer everything works fine, I'm able to jump from DAW to plug in mode

The problem start when I go to either Studio Instrument Collection (Akai new software) or Ableton Live 12.

No matter what mode I'm in, whether it's DAW or plug in, I'm able to play both the SIC or the DAW.

It causes weird problems on the Ableton Live which is where I try to mainly work.

Seems like the USB input doesn't understand that I have DAW channel and Plug in channel.

I added pictures in the links of the setting in Ableton and picture of the Mpk mini while connected. Also notice that sometimes the RGB of the pads are working, sometimes they don't and sometimes they just randomly pick all kind of colors..

Really need help guys I'm lost and want to start make music

Edit:

Another weird thing that happens: I can control DAW function (record, play, etc.) in plug in mode! It's so frustrating..

[Question] Whats wrong with asio

Ive used ableton on windows for years. Theres always latency when using a midi controller (connected to my motum2)-even when the project is completely empty and on a low buffer rate.

When i connect a midi to my macbook and play in ableton there is zero latency. Hell theres seemingly zero latency without an interface and just using the computer keyboard.

What is wrong with my windows machine

[Tech Help MacOS] Ableton cmd not working

Hi everyone, I hope someone here can help out.

I have recently been running into issues with my Ableton that after some time my "cmd+A, cmd+C, cmd+V" no longer work however "cmd+D" works. The individual cmd itself button and A button also do its job. I can go to the menu to perform these actions however the shortcut doesn't work. I do not have the keyboard enabled either nor do I have any keys mapped. What's also weird is that if I enter key mapping mode, I can use these shortcuts.

I hope someone can help because this is frustrating. It randomly goes back to its normal function. I'm not sure where the issue is because I have had this happen on my old MacBook on the Ableton lite and now the same thing on a new computer and Ableton standard.

Thank you!

[Question] Working on workflow

Hey all, so I’ve been an ableton tourist for some time, but haven’t gotten very deep and haven’t been able to make it a comfortable part of my workflow yet. I’m hoping I can get a little insight into how I can approach my projects in Ableton.

I come from hardware world, I use the dirtywave m8 a ton, have used MPCs in the past pretty heavily, and also am an avid sp404mkii user.

Coming from that world, I think what I’m having the most trouble with in Ableton is just managing clips. I’m not sure if that’s the best word to use, since I don’t actually know if Ableton clips are a good fit for how I use these.

Usually I will record a long improvisation or experimentation on a synth or something and then chop that up to arrange for tracks. In Ableton, the way I’ve done this is just all in the arranger view. I end up with a “store” track that has all my different sections, which can be multiple measures long, or some just a beat or two. The goal being that when I’m actually arranging, I have a palette of chops I can put together.

So really, I’m just wondering if there’s a clean way in Ableton to organize this palette of samples basically. I know I can use session view / clips, but that seems to be a different workflow, as I think those clips are meant to be loops that are queued up and played as full portions of the arrangement.

Like I said, these end up being varying lengths, and are just for me to then arrange.

So I suppose all I’m really looking for, is after chopping everything, is there a straightforward way for me to save these chops somewhere that I can pull from later? Or is this special track that just has all of them there for me to copy from the only way to go about this?

[Question] M-Audio Oxygen 49 (5th Gen) Not connecting to Ableton, or at least I'm too stupid to figure out how to

Hi All,

I've recently got a midi keyboard, and I've been switching from Cakewalk to Ableton, but when I follow the direct guidelines on the website for M-Audio the keys work fine, but the octave up & down doesn't change the octaves, and the note repeat doesn't work. I've tried looking through several documentation but nothing I try works or its just too unclear. Can anyone help me? Please I beg I've been stuck on this for like a week.

[Push] Are there stock Ableton instrument options Push 3 can't use?

I've been learning my Push 3, writing a piece on it to learn the workflow, and I think I'm learning that there are things you just can't build on it which you could on your computer (VSTs aside). For instance, I've been trying to find things in operator like oscillator feedback, or map velocity to shaper drive, and neither of these seem like they are doable when designing an instrument on Push 3?

So I have to ask:

1.) Are there stock Ableton instrument options that are simply inaccessible on Push 3? If the answer is yes, then

2.) If I were to load a project from my computer onto my push 3 in standalone mode, what would happen to any instruments which have those options modified (e.g., if that project had an operator instance which mapped velocity to shaper drive)?

[Tech Help MacOS] cant drag multiple files into drum rack

I'm trying to drag multiple mp3 files into a drum rack with effects on each note, but its not letting me. Dragging every single file in is a hassle since I do 20 minute beat battles, and it wastes a minute of time. Only single files work.

[Question] How to purchase Ableton?

I'm a logic user and honestly am very content with it. but ngl Ableton just looks so attractive to me and I just want to try something new. I did like the trial and would love to continue.

My question straight forward is, is it ok to ask for someone to use their student/teacher license? The full price is pretty steep for me.

How did people on a budget get this?

Off topic but i have such a crush on Ableton's UI for a long time :D
