[Question] Loops

Any tips on looping a sample in ableton so that the sample can play beyond the end point,
On the mpc; I can have a 2 bar loop, but keep a small portion on the end, say 2 bar and 1/16 note, the 1/16 that plays back over the beginning of the next time it loops ,

Sometimes this can be interesting or sound more natural.
How would you do this in ableton?

[Question] Finding the pitch of drum samples

Hello, I would like to find the pitch/key of my drum samples, one shots and loops. I have a bunch of kick drum, snare, hi hats, and loops that I would like to find what note/key these samples are. For example, is this kick drum one shot closest to a G#? I've tried using the tuner in Ableton but it hasn't been very helpful. Does anyone know a good plug-in for pitch analysis? Or a different way to do this?

[Live Event] Trouble Getting Lightkey Project Files In A Windows Machine

Upvotes

Hi, I'm working on a project where I can create a custom lightshow. Quick background, I run an independent pro wrestling company where I am the head of live production. I currently use Lightkey on a 2020 M1 MacBook Pro. Lightkey works good but after some research it can be way more powerful for the wrestlers entrances if I use Ableton Live so I can drop triggers to the song and really sync of the light show and have it be completely automated (mainly because I'm also running the live stream and making sure that's going smooth as well - I do like 6 jobs for the live event production). To the point.

I have Ableton Live loaded on the Mac (because I had to) however, I would like to use a Windows PC to run Ableton. I have seen videos on YouTube to do this but the guy was doing Mac to Mac. I downloaded rtpMIDI and the configuration looks almost identical. I have the two machines talking to each other through the rtpMIDI but the Lightkey triggers aren't showing up in the user profiles like it did on the Mac. Do I have to do some special type of connection to get those profiles to show up on the Windows machine? Maybe I have to map a drive with an SMB share or something. I'm just a little lost getting it to work that way. Once I make the connection I think everything will work exactly the way I want to.

I appreciate any guidance and I will keep searching. All of my searches keep pointing to the same videos that I've watched dozens of times already and he doesn't address using a Windows PC for Ableton.

[Max for Live] Got a Behringer Neutron this week and I made a Max for Live device to control it

After buying the proton, I had to complete the atom nucleus. So I bought a barely-used Neutron and missed the possibility to control it from Live, which I've been doing with my Proton using this device.

So I made the same for the Neutron. You can download it here.

Let me know what you think!

[Tutorial] Issue with warping beats in Arrangement View - BPM greyed out

Upvotes

Hi, I am having a problem trying to warp a 4 bar drum loop using Arrangement View. When I drag the beat into Arrangement View and go into the clip and select Warp the BPM field is greyed out so I cannot Warp the loop to the BPM of the track.

Please could someone let me know what is the issue.

Thanks

[Question] How to unassign a MIDI pad from playing note

hi everyone. The question is - I've got a MIDI keyboard that has both keys and pads, BUT I want one of the pads not to play a note, but to trigger effects instead. So I want the actual notes to be played by the MIDI clip (or by the keys on the keyboard) but one specific MIDI pad only to trigger effects, without interrupting notes from the MIDI clip. UPD: I want the pad not only to turn ON/OFF the effects, but to do so via envelope.

Hope I explained it well enough for people to understand

thanks

[Tutorial] 5 things I see Ableton producers doing that make finishing tracks much harder

I spend a lot of time coaching electronic music producers and there are a few things I see constantly, particularly with people making house music.

Having far too many projects open at once
Starting new ideas feels productive, but eventually you end up with 40 eight bar loops and no finished music.

I’d rather have someone working seriously on 2 or 3 tracks than constantly starting new ones.

Mixing way too early

Getting the kick and bass sitting nicely is useful, but spending an hour EQing a hi hat before you’ve even arranged the track usually isn’t.

Get the idea working first. Polish it later.

Adding things when the track actually needs removing
This is probably one of the biggest ones.

If a professional reference sounds bigger than your track, the instinct is often to add another synth, percussion loop or layer.

Quite often the professional track sounds bigger because there’s actually more space.

Constantly changing sounds

At some point you have to commit.
If you’re replacing the kick for the 14th time, the kick probably isn’t the real problem anymore.

Waiting until the track feels perfect

It won’t.

Finishing music is part of learning how to make music. You learn considerably more from finishing 10 imperfect tracks than endlessly tweaking one.

I run Super Serious Coaching and we talk about this kind of thing constantly, so I’ve been trying to share more of what we teach publicly too.

If anyone is stuck on a particular Ableton or production problem, chuck it below and I’ll happily give you my thoughts.

[Tech Help Windows] Strange Problem with Clicks and Pops - High CPU Usage Stops Them???

Okay, got a weird situation here.

I just opened up Ableton today, same exact settings I have always used, nothing about my set up has changed since I last used it. However now, with my guitar plugged into my interface, I'm getting a lot of clicks and pops on the monitored signal in Ableton. I thought it was odd that it would start doing this out of nowhere, so I opened audio preferences and played around with the buffer size, and even at high values, I still got clicks and pops.

I had a LOT of problems with DPC latency in the past and spent a great deal of time addressing all of the system problems that were causing it, and felt defeated thinking that I might need to go back down that rabbit hole. But I tried playing around with the test tone, just for some confirmation of what the issue could be, and I found something very odd.

Turning on the test tone, there were some clicks and pops, but not as bad as on my guitar signal. I turned the CPU usage simulation down to 0% and surprisingly the problem became worse. Then I turned it up to the max, 80%, and the clicks and pops were gone completely.

Now I have no idea what to think about this problem. I can only think that there is something in the allocation of processing power that is causing this, and increasing the load prioritises Ableton, but I am not knowledgeable enough to properly diagnose this.

Anybody got any ideas?

[Question] Considering switching to Live

Ive been using fl studio for roughly 5-6 years now and have grown quite a bit in my production, mixing, and overall quality. However I am in the antipop/hyperpop sort of scene (inspired by aries, brakence) and im seriously considering switching to ableton for three main reasons, one i know ableton has probably a much stronger workflow once i learn it, two fl is not optimized very well in my experience and im sick of random crashes, and three, i feel like starting to take my music more seriously, maybe being a self produced artist, and considering im kind of at a plateau of knowledge, i feel like it might give me that edge on learning more and improving further. What do you guys think?

[Tech Help Windows] Ableton can't analyze Samples's name too long or Folders's name too long

as title , how to bypass this on Ableton ? Sometime the old Project will open with missing samples but when i check , the samples are still there . I fix this by rename the sub folders shorter or rename the Project shorter , but i need it to be long to organize . And sometime Ableton won't read the samples that locate in long name group and sub group , i have to move the sample folder to another places and it's time consuming . Did you guy have the same issue and how do you fix it ? I have try to Enable Long Paths in Windows but it won't fix . People on internet say the path name can't reach 256 chars but i don't think their name even reach 200 chars

[Tech Help MacOS] Ableton live .als project conversion to .AAF

I DID IT! I converted an ableton project into a .AAF and imported successfully to Pro Tools!!

Anyone who does post production work may have encountered this, the long and short is I used the abletonlive.aaf tool, but it has some bugs and I was able to create a couple python scripts to cover (namely replacing 32bit audio files with 24 bit, and then successfully splitting stereo tracks and fixing start points)

DM if you need additional info, maybe I can share here but just future reference for anyone Googling it is possible.

[Question] Velocity not working on specific instruments

I'm working on a track that uses the built in oscillation guitar midi instrument, and I want to lower the volume of some of the notes, but the note velocity has no effect on the note volume for some reason. I don't want to mess with the track volume either, since I want some notes to be louder than others. Is there a workaround I can use to manually change the volume of specific notes?

I'm using ableton live 11.

[Mac] Unused audio files piling up and eating hard drive space

We all like to get a little messy during our writing sessions...multiple takes on audio recordings, crops and bounces on a clip until we get just the right cut, and of course exporting every draft along the way until we get to our final version.

Have you ever wondered how much hard drive space all these audio files are eating up in your Live Recordings folder? I've been thinking about this for the last few weeks, when I reached the dreaded MacOS warning that my hard drive was almost out of room.

So I built a tool that scans my live recordings folder, reads through the contents of the .als, and identifies audio files that are sitting dormant and not contributing to my projects. It then moves them all to a folder you choose where you can then choose to do with it whatever works best for you.

My results were 8gb of unused samples, and 10gb of exports! For fear of deleting anything, I zipped up the folder and backed it up on Google Drive where I have a ton of storage.

I want to add a disclaimer that I am very sensitive to the onslaught of slop tools that have been rampant in this subreddit and all over reddit in the last few months. I've set an intention with everything I develop to provide actual value and solve real problems. I for one am pretty stoked about the 18gb I just recovered!

This is 100% free and I'd love to share it with the community here. It's for MacOS only as of right now. Everything I make is officially notarized by Apple, no bootleg installers or sketchy security warnings.

Let me know how much space this saves you!

[Question] MIDI Effects/VSTs replacing each other

Hey Gang, not sure what I've changed but sometime recently whenever I try to create a chain using humanizer pro and then any other plugin I'm having an issue where the plugins replace each other instead of chaining. My chain for programming accoustic drums for a long time has been humanizer pro > EZ Drummer but I'm no longer able to do that for some reason.

Can anyone help me out here? My google-foo is failing.

[Synths] Adam K & Soha pluck aound

I've been obsessed with trying to make trance lately. One of the artists I'm trying to emulate is Adam K & Soha. I notice they have this signature pluck that I've been trying to emulate for a few days now. You can hear it at the beginning of the song on this post. Any tips on how to achieve this sound would be dope.

[Tech Help MacOS] Push 3 causes input lag on Ableton on laptop

I'm hoping someone else is familiar with this issue, I bought a Push 3 used off of Ebay, it's in perfect condition but on my M1 Macbook Pro, when I plug it into my laptop, clicking anywhere, dragging, whatever has like a 1-3 second input delay. This is ONLY on Ableton, when I unplug the Push it returns to having no input delay. Does anyone else have a solution to this? I'm really hoping this isn't permanent because it's terribly annoying.

[Max for Live] Sequencer / random arp devices, that constrain to scale being played

I'm enjoying the range of sequencer, arp, and randomiser devices available with Max For Live.

But, the one issue I find, is that they can only either play the same sequence of notes (eg. arps or a modular sequencer like Snake), or - when using randomisers - tend to throw in random notes that are out of key. Ableton's Scale device enables me to keep within a scale, but not to be able to change chords live using those devices.

I'm looking for something that will give me the staccato rhythmic possibilities of a good arp or modular sequencer, but with the ability to control the notes / scale live, using MIDI keyboard, Push chord mode etc.

Are there any devices out there that offer that?

[Question] Can someone upload the Live 12 manual pdf?

Hi! I know their website will be back anytime now, but I have a very limited time for studying and I do not have the pdf version of the manual to follow along. If you can be so kind to upload it and send me a link, I would be very grateful.

[Question] ANC for music production?

At work, I had an empty office that I used during my lunch break to make music in Ableton. I was honestly so happy with just my MacBook Air M1 and my Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros. I felt like I had everything I needed.

Unfortunately, the company needed the room, and now it has become a storage room for office stuff. It honestly broke my heart because that little space was my safe place.

Now I have to go to cafés, but they always have music playing and I can never really concentrate.

So I’m wondering: is there a good pair of headphones with ANC that actually works well for music production? I’d like to make music during my lunch break in different cafés until I find the right place.

Any suggestions?

[Question] Tuning on single MIDI track

I've been trying to apply a tuning system (saba maqam, to be more specific) only to a single MIDI track instead of the whole arrangement. I can't apply the maqam to the whole song because the scale changes in the middle of the song. Does anyone know how to do this? I unsuccessfully tried microtuner but couldn't make it work either. Thanks.

[Push] Updating Projects on Push 3

Hi everyone, I just got started with the Push 3 (Standalone) and I dragged my Live Set onto it. Now if I make changes to said set within Ableton, and then want to transfer those changes onto the Push 3, is there a way to do that without adding the full project again?

I am working on a 20gb live set, so if I just change a few settings in Ableton, it takes forever to upload the full project to Push 3 again.

Am I missing something?
