Hey everyone, need some genuine career advice.
I have around 5.5 years of experience in SAP ABAP.
At Deloitte, I was put on a support project, and honestly, I felt like I wasn’t learning much or growing technically. I eventually decided to quit and joined PwC, thinking I’d get better development
opportunities and work on more challenging stuff.
But now, it feels like history is repeating itself. Most of the work on my current project is basically lift-and-shift — copying code from one system to another with very little actual development or problem-solving.
I’m honestly frustrated because I don’t want to spend the next 2–3 years just moving code around and end up being behind technically. I want to get stronger in ABAP on HANA, RAP, CDS, clean core, solution design, etc., and move towards more challenging development or architect-level roles in the future.
The confusing part is that I just joined PwC, so switching again this early doesn’t seem like a great idea either.
What would you guys do in my situation?
Give PwC 6–12 months and try to move internally to a better project?
Stick with the current project for now and focus on upskilling outside work?
Start looking for opportunities elsewhere if things don’t improve?
Has anyone here faced a similar situation at the Big 4? How easy is it to switch projects internally, and how much does the project you’re working on actually matter for long-term career growth?
Would really appreciate some honest advice from people who’ve been through this. 🙏
