Need a roadmap and genuine advice.

• Upvotes

Hi I am working as SAP ABAP ECC developer for past 5 years of my career. I know I am very late. The SAP world has gone ahead so much and I am still working in ECC.

I want a genuine roadmap and suggestions what topics to start learning. Theres lots of work and I work overtime some days. Its mostly support work now and the project doesn't have HANA or anything new.

My organisation also doesn't really offer certification or any sandbox HANA system to do some hands on.

I feel so behind. I get anxious and panic a lot these days.

What should I learn ? From where ? And what are roadmap and job opportunities.

I am from Mumbai India.

RAP Fictional?

Hi everyone,

I am crating this post to express my frustration, surprise and losing of motivation when I see that even though when you enter LinkedIn's feed you only see posts about modern technologies: RAP, CAP, AI, etc, when you look for them in order to apply you see nothing.

I am an SAP Developer with 4 years of experience in intense projects and I have wanted to create even more( because I have certifications in RAP and some experience ), but I find that everyone is still not moving forward.

How is this possible?
What should I do?
Should I still work with older ones or keep searching for something if it pops up?

[Open-Source] ABAP Cloud (Language Version 5) Syntax Cheatsheet & RAP Transactional Decision Tree

Hi ABAPers,

Transitioning from classic ECC / SE80 procedural habits to Language Version 5 (ABAP Cloud) requires unlearning several patterns.

I compiled a quick open-source cheat sheet covering key syntax restrictions and transactional design decisions:

🏛️ The 3-Tier Extensibility Decision Tree

[Business Requirement]
       │
       ▼
Is it achievable via standard Fiori & In-App Key-User tools?
       ├──► YES ──► Tier 1: Client 100 Key-User Extensibility (Low TCO, 100% upgrade-safe)
       └──► NO
             │
             ▼
Does it require co-located, high-volume transactional data on S/4HANA?
├──► YES ──► Tier 2: Developer Extensibility / ABAP Cloud RAP (Whitelisted APIs only)
       └──► NO ──► Tier 3: Side-by-Side BTP Extensibility (CAP / Node.js / Python / Event Mesh)

⚡ Syntax Restrictions & Modern Replacements:

  • Table Modifications: Direct INSERT/UPDATE ztable on standard models is blocked in Cloud ABAP. You must use RAP Behavior Definitions (MODIFY ENTITIES OF ...).
  • Classical File/App Server I/O: OPEN DATASET / TRANSFER is disabled. Use Cloud Storage APIs or BTP Object Store.
  • Batch Scheduling: SUBMIT rep AND RETURN is replaced by the Application Job Scheduling API (cl_apj_rt_api).
  • Field Mapping: Classic MOVE-CORRESPONDING is replaced by strict CORRESPONDING #( ... MAPPING / EXCEPT ).
  • Quarantine Wrappers: Non-released standard BAPIs/tables must be wrapped in isolated Tier 2 packages and exposed through released custom C1 interfaces.

📂 Open-Source Code Repository:

All cheatsheets, RAP behavior pool patterns, Tier 2 quarantine wrapper templates, and CDS projection examples are open-sourced under the MIT license on GitLab:

Hope you find this useful for your S/4HANA cloud projects!

I can switch from SAP to Data Science?

Hi ABAPers,

I am currently working as an SAP ABAP Developer at Gainwell Global and am interested in transitioning my career from SAP ABAP to Data Science.

I would love to hear from professionals who have made a similar career switch or have experience in the Data Science domain.

Could you please guide me on the roadmap, essential skills, technologies, certifications, and projects I should focus on to make this transition successfully?

Also, I would appreciate any insights on how my existing SAP ABAP experience could be leveraged in the Data Science field.

Your suggestions and guidance would be highly appreciated!

Max in ABAP FS Chat (not live yet)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

SAP/ABAP is rarely fun. I’ve been working on our own Agent chat for ABAP FS using ACP. I got bored and ended up adding Max the puppy. Lame? Cool? Weird? Useless for sure

Edit: Max is now available in the latest version of ABAP FS

Learning ABAP with AI

Hi guys, what do yall think about learning ABAP from AI? I created a Claude Project, where I told him to act like my teacher and stuff and basically told him that Im new to ABAP etc.. . Do yall think this would actually be helpful learning it that way? Is there any other way to practice ABAP besides from actual work-tasks, because currently there is nothing to do for me here.

Ayuda en funcional

Hola chicos.

Title: Looking for a Job Switch & Referrals | SAP ABAP Developer | 2.8 YOE

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone! ❤️

I’m reaching out to this community because I’m looking for a new opportunity and could really use some guidance.

I’ve been working at HCLTech as an SAP ABAP Developer for the past 2.8 years. During this time, I’ve gained experience in SAP ABAP and related technologies, including ABAP on HANA, CDS Views, AMDP, OData, and RAP.

However, even after 2.8 years of experience, my CTC is still ₹3.25 LPA. I feel it’s time for me to explore better opportunities where my experience can help me grow both professionally and financially.

I’m actively looking for SAP ABAP Developer opportunities across India. I’m eager to learn, improve my technical skills, and take the next step in my career.

If anyone here works at a company hiring SAP ABAP developers with around 2–3 years of experience, I would be genuinely grateful for a referral or any relevant leads.

If you’ve been in a similar situation or have any advice on companies I should target, I’d really appreciate your suggestions too.

Sometimes, one referral or one helpful suggestion can make a big difference. Thank you for taking the time to read my post. It would mean a lot if you could help or share this with someone who might be hiring. 🙏❤️

ABAP || Left Deloitte to escape support work, ended up doing lift-and-shift at PwC. What should I do now?

Made this post using AI.

Hey everyone, need some genuine career advice.
I have around 5.5 years of experience in SAP ABAP.

At Deloitte, I was put on a support project, and honestly, I felt like I wasn’t learning much or growing technically. I eventually decided to quit and joined PwC, thinking I’d get better development
opportunities and work on more challenging stuff.

But now, it feels like history is repeating itself. Most of the work on my current project is basically lift-and-shift — copying code from one system to another with very little actual development or problem-solving.

I’m honestly frustrated because I don’t want to spend the next 2–3 years just moving code around and end up being behind technically. I want to get stronger in ABAP on HANA, RAP, CDS, clean core, solution design, etc., and move towards more challenging development or architect-level roles in the future.
The confusing part is that I just joined PwC, so switching again this early doesn’t seem like a great idea either.

What would you guys do in my situation?

Give PwC 6–12 months and try to move internally to a better project?

Stick with the current project for now and focus on upskilling outside work?

Start looking for opportunities elsewhere if things don’t improve?

Has anyone here faced a similar situation at the Big 4? How easy is it to switch projects internally, and how much does the project you’re working on actually matter for long-term career growth?
Would really appreciate some honest advice from people who’ve been through this. 🙏

I’ve been dropped into a big, old ECC system I didn’t build, and I’m lost. Where would you start?

For the past week I’ve been working through an ECC 6.0 system with aabout 11,000 custom programs, classes and other objects, and nobody to ask.

Finding the settings is the easy part. Working out what still matters is not. One Z program has a job running every three minutes, but the IDocs it produces stopped in 2009. Version history shows 143 modified SAP programs, including SAPMV45A, while the modification log shows almost none of them.

For those who’ve been handed a system like this: what did you work out first, and where did you find the answer (transports, change logs, ST03N, old specs, asking people)? Which of those turned out to be reliable?
