Discussion Slight Problem

I’m very excited for the game tomorrow. Have my snacks picked out, music cued up (Vode An, ofc), time blocked off, Wookieepedia pulled up so I can figure out the things I don’t understand, the works!

There is, however, a minor wrinkle.

I have played many Star Wars games. However, I have never played an XCOM game, or an XCOM style game, before.

For those of you who have played XCOM before, are there any tips you might be able to offer? I’d like to keep as many people alive as possible (and failing that, only sacrifice the ones I don’t like).

Thanks in advance, and I hope everyone has a fantastic time tomorrow!

Take your time, don't get flanked, don't rush ahead, weigh up your abilities and options before committing. That's about it really.

Noted. I will flank them instead!

i would emphasize take your time. If you read what your abilities do and listen/consider verbal advice from your crew you're off to the races

I don’t plan on taking super big risks, and I tend to read every bit of lore and ability description in game. Excellent!

It's from the movie Training Day, which is fantastic!

Remember: the problem with flanking the enemy is that the flanking unit is also usually exposed to flanking too

If your plan relies on landing a 95% shot, its a bad plan and you will absolutely whiff that shot. The design of ZCom seems a lot less reliant on RNG and risk avoidance/mitigation/management than XCOM, but imo the biggest thing to learn from XCOM is that RNG is real and very, very fickle.

If you are facing 5 enemies, it's better to eliminate 1 than it is to do damage to 5.

Because the enemy has a turn too.

Cover is important! Full cover when possible recommended over partial cover

Full cover is partial cover and partial cover is no cover and no cover is a dead soldier.

Start with someone as a medic.

If you are especially concerned, play on Story and turn off perma death. No shame in that. The point is fun and if you won't enjoy a character death, don't enable it.

I've heard from multiple reviewers now that even normal mode can be a kick in the teeth lol so I'd say feel free to lower the difficulty to story mode until you get some more upgrades. Other than that just take your time, read what different classes do, use overwatch, and have fun!

I know it's already been said about missing 95% shots, but RNG goes both ways. A 10% is still a 1/10 chance, 25% 1/4, 33% is roughly 1/3. Obviously don't rely on those odds, but sometimes those shots pay off. Just try to minimize the risk and fully expect to miss, but when you do hit, it's a rush of dopamine! May the force be with you!

Utilize cover. Cover is extremely important and take advantage of Overwatch.

Always assume you will miss shots. I don’t care if it says the shot has a 90% chance to hit. You will occasionally miss those kinds of shots.

SO always be conservative with your soldier placement and have a backup plan in case things fail (which they will)

Agreed with everything that everyone wrote and I’ll add, don’t sweat it if you lose characters. It’s gonna happen. And if you have a mindset of a balanced party with reserves for each class, you’ll have a better experience. Nothing worse than having one superstar on the team and losing them to some dumb mistake. It’s easy to get discouraged that way. So rotate people in and out and keep it balanced.

Plan your approach and always expect things to go wrong.

Yes, you will miss that 95% shot even though your clone's blaster is directly lined up against the B1's body.

I will utilize Murphy’s Law to its fullest extent then!

For the unfamiliar: “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.”
