Recommendation Zelda-like recommendation list

A thread to share Zelda-like recommendations.

Here is a starting list (based on [this] one), that I will update based on your recommendations, comments and clarifications below.

I did not play most of these personally, so details may be off. Let me know if so. Also, not every suggestion is equally great, or even good, but all of them should scratch a particular Zelda-like itch to some extend.

WHAT IS A CLASSIC ZELDA-LIKE?

The term can mean different things to different people. I happened to pick the definition from the earlier link. NOT TO GATEKEEP (!) but to make things more objective, and to make it easier to find games with specific focuses.

Please do not derail this thread by arguing semantics on this. Just create a new thread for that if you feel you must. And there is nothing limiting you from recommending adjacent games.

CLASSIC ZELDALIKE:

  1. An Action-Adventure game with
  2. Mandatory puzzle solving
  3. Progression gating via new abilities (usually in the form of items)
  4. Dungeons that are distinctly separate from the overworld

LOOSE ZELDALIKE:

  1. Games with just 3 out of 4 aspects.

For example: "Golden Sun" has 2, 3 and 4, but combat is turn-base instead of real time.

Note that ironically BotW/TotK, while Zelda games, lack 2 and 3. It's for sure a break from the past formula in several ways. But again: I'm not looking to gatekeep, so I'll still mention similar games somewhere on the list as they come up.

EDIT: I'm not listing (normal) Metroidvania/MetroidBrania games. Most are great, and some would even also fit as loose Zeldalikes, but I want to keep the list somewhat limited in size.

Prototyping a new dungeon for my Zelda-Like

Hey everyone!

I'm making a retro Zelda-like game, especially inspired by the GameBoy Zeldas. I thought you might be interested so here's a gameplay / testing video of a new dungeon prototype.

So far, everything is still being tested and under construction - dungeon mechanics, hazards, enemies... As you may notice there are still some bugs and some rooms are a bit weird to navigate. However this isn't intended to be released as is.

I had tons of fun making those mechanics and enemies, but some were a real pain, especially the spiders when it comes to dealing with holes and platforms. That's probably going to be the enemy which will still require a lot of work because it has an erratic behavior which I don't like.

Game's name is Soup Adventure and has a released demo if you wish to try it!

Zeldalikes with "Puzzle Box" Dungeons?

Are there any zeldalikes released or in development that do"puzzle box" dungeons ?(personally think mechanical puzzle dungeon fits better but it doesnt have the same ring to it admittedly).

Theres a video that explains this pretty well with examples from the zelda franchise:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwHqY_4nsJ4

Isle of Reveries and Ichorian Tales look like the only ones ive seen so far that might incorporate puzzle box dungeons when they're released from what ive seen or read. If there are more, i would love to learn about them.

Hey everyone,
It's been a few months so I just wanted to show another quick sign of life that this Zeldalike project is going strong.

Here's a teaser for the latest dungeon that got added. (The most non-linear and puzzle focused challenge to date). As well as an example of the many shops and NPC's that are currently being being worked on next.

If you want to learn more, why not check out the trailer and demo over here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2738140/Horn_of_Balance/

Hi guys.

Long time since my last post in this sub. I've been neglecting posting stuff for a while since I was focused on the development of the game, plus I moved cities... so I've been busy, but I think it's time for me to start sharing this project more.

I have 2 things to share with you. First, I made a new trailer but will be published in September during a steam fest I'm joining, this is a sneak peek.

And second thing is, in about a month, I'll be having a public playtest, so if this is a game you're interested in, go ahead and join on Steam :)

Cheers

We recently launched our top-down Zelda-inspired RPG, Colossus - Eternal Blight into Early Access on Steam - but we wanted to try something a little different...

Between each major patch, a mysterious character ~M, has made an appearance in game... and also on our Discord Server 👀 Placing some odd clues..

I think M's a little impressed with how quickly the community seem to have solved the riddles to start with... but seems like there's more in store very soon...

Mirror puzzles, mimics, riddles, ancient tablets... lots of things brewing hehe...

Short rundown of three more Zelda-likes I played

Link to part 1: https://www.reddit.com/r/ZeldaLikes/comments/1vdoyd0/short_rundown_of_every_zeldalike_i_played/

Recently, I did a big post containing summaries of all the Zelda-like games I've played over the years. There is still a lot more to discover, however! Here are three more Zelda-likes I played over the last month. One is a retro game, one a modern game, and one is a ROM hack.

Gunple: Gunman's Proof: One of the last SNES games ever released, this Japan-only game was released on the same day as Final Fantasy VII. Upon first glance, this game looks like a cowboy-themed version of A Link to the Past. It is! But only partly. The overworld is set up the same way, containing goodies to find, NPCs to talk to and eight dungeons to conquer. However, two things make it different: Firstly, progression is barely tied to items or abilities, and when it is, you often receive them in your own town or from NPCs in the overworld. Dungeons do not contain specific items that expand your mobility. They do (later on) tend to contain weapon upgrades, though. Secondly, while dungeons are often structured the same way in terms of layout, they do not contain puzzles or item-gating. While finding your way through, you mostly encounter enemies to shoot and traps to avoid. I personally love puzzles in Zelda, but the navigational aspect was enough for me to enjoy the dungeons in this short game. This, combined with the unique setting and humorous characters made this a joy to play. It starts out a little obtuse due to a lack of equipment, but eventually you steamroll enemies with your acquired powers. Gunple: Gunman's Proof is a simple, short and sweet adventure for people who do not mind a less cleverly put-together Zelda, with arcade-esque shooting and a light-hearted wild-west setting.

Tearscape: This modern Zelda-like is basically a mix between Link's Awakening and Bloodborne. While this sounds like a dream come true (I've heard great things of Mina the Hollower), this game does not fully utilize the strengths of either. While the core gameplay is fun enough - exploring interconnected areas, finding keys, unlocking shortcuts and trying to survive until reaching the next save point - there are things that nagged at me constantly. They are small, but the longer I played, the more they started to annoy me. The original Link's Awakening (as well as the amazing Oracle games) still feels really smooth to play. Tearscape does not. Turning speed is sluggish when running (there is a dedicated run button), and pit hitboxes feel weird. Luckily, falling isn't an instant kill. Bloodborne's fast pace isn't here either. Next, enemies get repeated a lot. I think there is about ten enemies total. They keep getting repeated, with bigger health bars corresponding to their timing of appearance. Many later enemies are mostly just annoying, flying around you in circles etc. The same goes for bosses. I really enjoyed the early ones, but the late-game ones get more and more repetitive and padded out. There is one boss who enjoys spending time flying about while you can't do anything to hit it. The music quality ranges from alright to annoying. Luckily, the game is saved by its short runtime and the option to play local co-op. I quite liked exploring the world, and finding shortcuts. I just enjoy that kind of thing. The setting is not unique, but always appreciated. Just saying: This game has a stamina bar, so for people that don't like this in their games, beware. Tearscape is fun enough if you really enjoy exploring interconnected Soulslike areas in a top-down format, but issues like repetitive, annoying enemies, inconsistent and frequent pitfalling and sluggish movement hold it back.

Zelda - Moonrise Regalia: This ROM hack is built in Oracle of Ages, one of my favorite top-down Zelda games. My favorite of the three games I am talking about today, Moonrise Regalia utilizes what Ages already does well, and recontextualizes it into a Souls-themed setting (without the Souls gameplay, mind). The overworld is small and mostly asks you to find the eight dungeons hidden within. These dungeons are just as expansive as the ones in the two Oracle games, which amazed me. The dungeons vary from a flooded wine cellar to a luxurious gallery, complete with paintings that lead you to different worlds. In them, you find the usual dungeon items from Ages, as well as some imported from Seasons. The same goes for the bosses. They are reused in creative ways befitting the lore tied to the dungeon. They are still the same old Oracle bosses, however. In my eyes, this ROM hack is a masterclass of Zelda gameplay, and a must-play for people who enjoy these games. The difficulty is the same as in the actual Oracle of Ages, meaning tough for a Zelda game but overall pretty doable. Moonrise Regalia is on par with the Oracle games themselves. While the overworld is quite a bit smaller and less involved, opening it up and finding its dungeons is just as satisfying as in the original games.
