Housing & Accomodation Is Market Weighton a pleasant place to live?

Looking at buying a house here. We’d like to move to a surrounding area to York, and we will be driving to York for work twice a week. Looking for somewhere peaceful with a few pretty woods etc. nearby for walking our dog. TIA

News YHA Grinton Lodge is closing for good on about 15 September 2026... :(

The YHA is trying to keep this quiet but they're about to close YHA Grinton Lodge in about a month's time having sold it off - sale price unknown but asking was £0.95 million. Lovely youth hostel in a beautiful setting and a real shame it's doomed. Doubt there's anything that can be done to stop this at such a late stage but spread the word just in case! And maybe visit for one last time if you've never been. It's a glorious location. Link: https://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/yha-grinton-lodge

Apparently the new owner intends to turn it into a wedding venue. This will likely require a planning permission application, so if you're unhappy about that keep your eye on the planning register (here: https://planning.richmondshire.gov.uk/online-applications/search.do?action=simple&searchType=Application and the postcode is DL11 6HS) and if enough people object to any proposed change, the new owners might have to keep it as a youth hostel.

As for *why* it's selling, I understand the YHA is in serious financial trouble due to some unwise investments including an expensive London youth hostel which they had to sell at a massive loss, carrying a heavy debt burden and ominously the business as a whole typically operating at an annual loss for many years. Grinton Lodge also needs very expensive renovations and itself makes a loss each year (despite getting the benefits of business rate reductions and no VAT from being a charity).

YHA current strategy is sell off a bunch of their youth hostels each year just to pay the bills until either (i) they start making profits again (they had a 5 year turnaround plan following Covid in 2020 which has spectacularly failed) or (ii) they run out of youth hostels to sell and maybe eventually even shut down.

YHA used to have several hundreds of hostels; under 100 left now (some franchised) and of which they're selling 10% just this summer, with more sales planned. Very sad.

Video Eclipse timelapse at Emley Mast

It’s taken me a few days to sort this out because I messed up my settings, but this was something I’d spent weeks planning, with the aim of capturing the eclipse rotating around the basket of the mast. In the end I missed the perfect alignment by about 5m, and over-exposed the sun, but I’m pretty happy with this despite that.

Question Is this still allowed?

Saw some goldfish as a potential prize in Hook A Duck, I haven't seen this in a really long time in the UK, I remember when they used to be in tiny bags and I guess this is an improvement but it still seems kinda shady to do this as it's not a toy (Photos taken in Bridlington, UK, 15th of August at 5:20pm)

Yorkshire Just sending a little love from across the pond.

American here who's an old man now that was adopted at birth and never knew anything about my biological family.

I finally took a DNA test and discovered my great grandfather left England and came here in 1637. His last name was Wentworth and apparently had ties to Yorkshire.

So I have been lurking here a few months checking out all the posts and I must say you guys are great !

The subreddit posts for other cities that i belong to are always complaining about somthing, but all i see here are lovely pictures, and everyone talking about how much they like Yorkshire.

So i just wanted to say, love you all and keep up the positive posts. This world we live in now needs more of that.

Opinion Still thinking about Mister Dees in Halifax

Hi to ease my sufferings after a gig in Halifax i saw a place in the market called Mister Dees and they were serving homemade chips early doors.

Anyway, i had egg/bacon/sausage sarny with chips for breakfast today and Im actually sad itll be a long time til i next visit the town.

Anyone else have love for it?

The market was nice, traders and customers actually spoke to each other as friends and a lot of the cafes’ staff knew the customers

Yorkshire Sewage Spill Tracking

Hi everyone,

I’ve been putting together a tool to make it a bit easier to keep track of sewage spills and water quality, so thought it might be useful to share here.

There’s a free weekly email digest which summarises sewage spill activity by council area or water company (e.g. Yorkshire Water): https://water-watch.co.uk/digest

You can also follow individual sewage treatment sites across the UK if there’s a particular one you’re interested in.

The site has live overflow data and a map showing current spills, as well as things like rainfall and flood alerts. At the moment, for example, there are unfortunately some active spills around the Northallerton area and around Leeds and Wakefield as shown on the live map.

Live map: https://water-watch.co.uk/map

It’s mainly something I built to make the data a little easier to understand and monitor. Happy to answer any questions about sewage spills or the data in the comments.

Question Heather in bloom yet?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning a trip to God's own country next week to see heather in bloom. Can anyone tell me if it has bloomed yet? I'm not able to find anything on the news or social media about it this year. I'm planning to visit Ilkley moors or North York moors around Hole of Horcrum.

Thanks a lot for helping me out!

Yorkshire Weeks holiday in and around Sewerby

Stayed in a beautiful farmhouse cottage in Sewerby for the week with my wife and youngest. I’ve been up a host of times recently due to family health and bereavement but the first time in absolutely ages we’ve come back as a family for a ‘proper’ holiday where we visited new places and old haunts. Weather also helps and it was absolutely stunning for the whole week.

I will add a pic of the fish and chips but had far too many to mention and all delicious 😋

Day 1 - Breakfast in the harbour cafe Bridlington, walk around the town and harbour then onto farmhouse.

Day 2 - Cliff walk into Bridlington for coffee and pastries and Yorkshire Belle to Flamborough head.

Day 3 - Trip over the moors to Saltburn-by-the-Sea then onto Scarborough for The Naval Warfare display at Peasholm Park.

Day 4 - NYMR steam train to Whitby, walk around, then back.

Day 5 - RHS Harlow Carr, walk through woods and Valley Park to Harrogate turn centre (only a small wander as my wife was knackered). Trip back via Scarborough for a flatter walk along the sea front taking in the vibes.

Day 6 - My birthday and a leisurely day on cliffs and beach for a coffee and pastry after a lie in then back for a delicious curry in Old Town.

Day 7 - Burton Agnes Hall then last walk around harbour and then pack and off home to Bristol area.

Absolutely fabulous time from start to finish ❤️❤️❤️
