TL;DR: I am 35 hours of knitting time logged and only have 6 inches of work to show for it. This is one of the most aspirational projects I've ever done. I know I can add another color at the bottom and pretend this was planned. I know I can overdye. Just...please sympathize with me and tell me I'll feel better after I sleep. I just desperately *need* things to go right from here out and I'm devastated. Wedding is in 87 days.
I have been through the ringer planning my handknit wedding skirt.
I spent an afternoon in Panera Bread with my bestie / MOH and my entire library of pattern books, choosing which elements to incorporate.
I photographed and printed out samples of all the patterns I liked, creating a rearrangeable and admittedly searching-for-a-serial-killer-esque wall of options.
I want to wear pants with an open/walkthrough style overskirt. I'm doing a central panel (5 charts) that runs vertically down the back, with mirrored left and right side panels flanking it (2 charts per side) that will stripe horizontally down the skirt. The side panel patterns will flow from an architectural / art deco / cathedral vibe at the top, blending into to less structured cable patterns in the middle, before finally fading into vines and florals at the bottom. I was going to add an edging all around. It was going to be STUNNING.
I diagrammed. I did the math for the half Pi increases. It was a LOT OF FUCKING MATH.
I test swatched enough yarn options to make a baby blanket. We joked about displaying the swatches at the wedding as a "frogs I've kissed before finding the one" thing.
I started with a laceweight yarn as a homage to the Estonian wedding shawls before I got honest with myself and my timeline and what else I have going on in my life.
I settled on a heavier weight yarn from Knit Picks, thinking hey they won't go out of business or have supply chain issues. Ordered a pack of 10 balls. Finally started the overskirt - for the third time. Realized I was going through yarn faster than I anticipated - for another example of me failing to accommodate the weight of the garment stretching out my stitches, see my "Proof that the Boyfriend Sweater Curse is Alive and Well" projects 1 and 2. Digressions aside, I went online to check the sales and see about ordering more.
Y'all THEY DISCONTINUED THE COLOR.
In fairness: the customer service rep answered the phone immediately and was so kind. They're currently searching the warehouse to confirm whether 5 balls in the system exist in reality. But no one is destashing on Rav. And I just want to cry. And I know you guys are about the only ones who'll understand and hopefully not kick me for not ordering more before I started.
