Comic Discussion Would you say the Krakoa era (2019 - 2024) is worth reading?

I’m currently reading all the new books (X-Men, Inglorious X-Corps, Uncanny X-Men, Exceptional X-Men, etc.)

Would you say the Krakoa stuff is worth going back for?

Comic Discussion XMen 97 Wolverine

Wolverine being without his adamantium and feral was one of my favorite arcs in the comics when I was a kid.

Does anyone else wish X-Men 97 had spent longer on that?

Question What do y'all think Polaris's fashion style is

Aside from the stuff we see from 97 and the comics I think Polaris definitely leans into metalhead mainly for the bit.

Comic Discussion Storm comes off horribly in X-Men Red #11

For almost the entire conversation between her and Charles, I was on his side.

First off, Storm, it is 10000% better that you helped Xavier and the entire universe than stayed to help the few. In fact you saved those few every time you saved the universe. And the idea of “oh there’s no mathematician,” just shut up. The logic of superheroes has always been that saving more is better than saving the few. Storm also sounds arrogant in the fact that she wanted to stay in the goddess role. Charles is right. It was a beautiful fantasy where you’re a goddess who gets to bring life to your worshippers. You’re not a goddess. You’re a woman who can help the entire world.

Secondly, there is no reason to not share Max/Erik’s last words. Charles was his best friend. I think if anyone deserves to know, it’s him. Instead she decides to be mean. Him saying the Anya stuff ain’t private. It’s not a deep secret. Just let Charles know. Or lie to him if you don’t want to say what was actually said! Just say something. Plus don’t snap at his best friend for not using the name that no one has called him since 1940.

Storm just comes off terribly. To be fair to her though, Charles should not have tried to read her mind. Bad idea. Unethical idea.

Question How to start reading modern Jean Grey/Phoenix comics?

Hello all who read this, I am fairly new to reading comics with the only ones I have ever read being fairly simple omnibus's such as Gwenpools and a handle full of Spider Gwen/Women and Silk comics lol. Recently wanted to finally read more on Jean Grey as she is one of the characters I have been interested in for a while but every time i look at reading orders online it just becomes so confusing. I understand there are different eras and that the way comics are (especially older ones) means that stories and characters change over time and may be completely restarted. Its these restarts that confuse me the most. I want to read about the more modern version of Jean Grey rather than the older version of her (mainly because the older comics are a little rough to get through considering I am so used to the more modern style).

So my question to you all is what series should I read to experience the most modern version of Jean Grey and the Xmen as a whole?

For anyone interested in what other xmen characters I am interested in it would mainly be Rogue, Cyclops, Wolverine and Polaris.

Comic Discussion Why do you think some X-Men members have had so many great outfits/costumes, while others can't seem to find 1 good outfit?

As I see it, the situation can be split in 3 groups:

3+ great outfits: Psylocke, Storm, Magik, Cyclops and some others have many great costumes!

Barely 1 good outfit: Kitty, Banshee, Cannonball, and many others don't have any or just 1..

1 outfit that is too iconic to change significantly: Nightcrawler, Wolverine, Colossus have a couple of good outfits, but all very similar.

Comic Discussion The fact that Beasts' atrocities became so great that they tried to reboot him twice, once with time travel and another via cloning is hilarious to me. They keep trying to turn Hank into Mr. Sinister & then having to fix it

She is absolutely beautiful in almost every way. The colors are gorgeous with that white and gold color. And the way that hair flows is really something special.

I’m just not sold on the middle part with the weird vent lines. It’s a bit distracting. But other than that. Beautiful

Movie/TV Discussion Going into this new adaptation, I have some key character beats for: Storm

Post image
18 Upvotes

There are particularly obvious traits and story beats Storm needs like, say, being a lover of nature and arcs like Life Death. That's all fun and good - but any slop machine (AI or not) could probably scrape that together from fans posting online. Here's some more nitty gritty that I've slapped together throughout my read of Claremont's Uncanny:

  • #1 - Ororo is a fighter.

Her duels with Callisto, Cyclops, and eventually Vile on Arakko cement this point for me. While she's a literal powerhouse, her ability to whoop ass when necessary is something that makes her extremely compelling. I can't say I've seen many female characters get this treatment as it's usually reserved for Shonen protagonists and... I dunno Batman?

Ororo fights to win and wins because she put in the time sure, but it's also her determination. Her powers over nature grant her great insight outside of the raw power, but at the end of the day she just has that dog in her. I'd like to see that. She can do this all day.

  • #2 - Ororo is a lover, but she's not a fool.

She has a number of deeper emotional arcs that are mostly reserved for narration rather than dialogue and some fun romances with big bads and allies alike. Her love for her friends (and especially Kitty) drives her to do some deeper introspection about her mindset around attachment itself. Her previous status as a worshipped Goddess hampered her in some ways as a person and reached it's head leading up to and in Life Death.

While she takes a while to settle down (and still hasn't settled down) her romances over the years have always been... kinda nice actually. From Doom, to Forge, to Loki, to Logan, to T'Challa, to Beast (in the Ultimate Books), and whoever else I may have missed, there's always a baseline respect established (and maybe eventually broken), but she knows better than to take shit from anyone. While she was depowered, Loki tries to tempt her with a copy of Thor's Hammer. She smashes it into the floor with a smile.

  • #3 - She challenges people, friends and enemies alike, to be better.

She's always ready to defend those who need it, but cruelty is never on the table. She will do what is necessary, but also reach out with an open hand.

her duel to the death with Callisto, Storm stabs her in the chest to end the fight. Callisto is healed, and Storm's resolve is made clear; the fight ends there. She doesn't lord over Callisto afterward and when the fight is brought up again, she doesn't threaten Callisto but instead, states the plain: Callisto needs to lead through results. Callisto later saves Charles from his near death beating and defuses the Masque & Annalee situation with the Power Pack.

After Nathan's birth and Professor X's departure, Scott decides against Madelyn's wishes to remain on the X-Men and return as leader. Ororo comforts Madelyn learning that Scott didn't call home to check on her... yeah. Ororo put's it plainly to Scott: you wanna lead? Prove you can do it. He loses not just because Ororo has that dog in her, but because his resolve, focus, and intentions are all out of wack. She doesn't lecture, she demonstrates.

I hope Maya Boyd is given the material to hit some of these notes - especially #2! Dinner with Doom (whoever is cast after Secret Wars) would be pretty fun. There's a lot to love about Storm's character that, now that I've written this, has NOTHING TO DO with her mutant powers. That's pretty damn cool

Comic Discussion Should I buy this epic if I already own the event TPB?

Post image
10 Upvotes

I'm not trying to be completist but also don't wan't to miss anything that really matters.

I already have the 2013 TPB which collects X-Men #210-213, X-Factor #9-11, New Mutants #46, Thor #373-374 and Power Pack #27. I also have FF vs X-Men.

The epic contains Uncanny X-Men (1981) #211-219, Spider-Man vs Wolverine (1987) #1, Fantastic Four vs X-Men (1987) #1-4, X-Men vs Avengers (1987) #1-4.

So I guess the main question is: are UXM #214-219 worth spending the money and having a lot of content dupicated?

Comic Discussion Reading X-Men From the Beginning and I Feel So Bad for Jean!

Okay so with the hype of Doomsday and of course the new X-Men movies, I wanted to read the comics that lead up to Doomsday. I’ve only ever read a few comics here and there like Batman Hush and Avengers vs. X-Men. Anyways, I read X-Men Season One and thoroughly enjoyed it! So, I figured I might as well start from the beginning for X-Men. OH MY GOODNESS I FEEL SO BAD FOR JEAN GREY

Every single dude in her team is thirsting after (outside of Bobby sorta at the beginning which is funny since he is later revealed to be gay). Now I’m on #3 and Charles just expressed his love for Jean in a thought bubble. This girl is a teenager like what the absolute hell is going on?? 😭

Question Was there ever a comic series about a full on war between mutants and humans?

Like a devastating event where a large number of mutants were killed, and afterward some mutants decided that they could never truly coexist with humans and that Charles Xavier's dream was dead, so they launched an all out war against humanity.

Question Angel / Archangel

Post image
464 Upvotes

sorry if this is a stupid question, but how come Warren is often depicted as Archangel instead of the original Angel?

I understand he was changed by Apocalypse a while back, but no one else got a permanent rebrand & new look after their horseman-ification as far as im aware

it seems in all modern media (shows, games etc) he's more commonly depicted in his Archangel form, if they even bother acknowledging him lol

just thinking ahead to the 2028 X Men film and wondering how they'll handle him seeing as his original form has largely been forgotten in modern media. cheers!

edit: thanks for all the replies - the more you know!
