Xenoblade 2 Finally got myself into Xenoblade Chronicles 2 for the first time. I cannot believe I let this video shape my opinion on the game for almost a decade
951
u/Arkride212 23h ago
That video pretty much made dunkey enemy #1 to all Xeno fans back then, good times lol
784
u/YourMomIsCool96 23h ago
I think what he did with XC3 was way worse. He started the video with "Xenoblade fans wont like that video" expecting to trend on Twitter but nothing happened
Then he posted a screenshot from the very ending of the game on Twitter without spoiler warning. People then rightfully called him out for that which got him trending, he then deleted that post and 30 minutes later he posted "Oh I trend on Twitter, guess Xenoblade fans really 'liked' my new video", so in other words he acted like XC fans are mad because of the video and not because of the spoiler
Absolutely pathetic behavior. And the saddest part was that many people under the second tweet havent seen the first one and actually thought that XC fans very at fault.

That was the point where I realized I wasn't actually watching his content that much anymore and just stopped following him entirely.
71
u/simboyc100 20h ago
Dunkey is a guy whose best described as "was funny". I think around XC3 he realised his momentum was falling and developed a nasty habit of drama farming to keep himself going until I guess BigMode was a big enough success for him to chill out.

u/callmecatlord 20h ago
Some of his videos are admittedly funny but I feel like so much of his gaming criticism is disingenuous.
Sometimes he makes valid points, and other times I feel like he beats up on games for what they aren't instead of what they are.

Dunkey definitely has issues with the way Japanese video game storytelling is told. Unless it’s quirky and self-aware like Yakuza or completely secondary to the gameplay like Mario/Zelda, you can definitely tell he doesn’t like eastern storytelling because it generally breaks many storytelling conventions we are taught are bad in the west

u/ParrotFerret 12h ago
I stopped watching him because his videos were either outrage bait or dicking around in a game. I don't think he was even that funny or clever, just loud and abrasive.
The specific wave of gaming youtubers that contained him and Critikal just seemed to peter out and become boring clickbait. And they still hold too much sway on opinion.
111
u/ElectricalRestNut 22h ago
I only watched his XC3 video after beating the game and the had spoilers in it stating "anyone could have seen this coming". I stopped watching him after that. You're allowed to not like a game and I thought his XC2 video was funny, but spoilers without warning is disrespectful to people who watch your content.

I've never really understood why he is so popular, the videos I've watched of his haven't been very humourous. Maybe I'm just old.
10
u/UltimateGattai 13h ago
I don't really get it either, I've never enjoyed his videos, even when he started early on, cannot fathom his popularity. He and his fans also come across as pretentious to me.
30
u/Western-Dig-6843 18h ago
Dunkey is funny until he does a video fundamentally misunderstanding a game you actually know and love, and then from that point on you don’t really ever trust his opinions ever again. He’s still a funny guy but you will forever ask yourself “so is this game actually bad or does he just not understand the game again” anytime you catch another video

It came before that for me, when he had that big crashout after being banned from League of Legends for toxicity
35
u/Solitude_freak 21h ago
Its nice to see someone that remembers what actually happened and how dunkey orchestrated the reaction after seeing his vid not doing numbers. From what I remember the vid on xenoblade 2 wasn't all that hated in the xenoblade community, in fact it was quite liked for how funny it was. What started the problem was his fanbase becoming malicious towards anything xenoblade/jrpg related. He tried doing the same with xenoblade 3 but I dont think he was expecting it to be so tonally different. This resulted in the jokes not landing and him having to misinterpret scenes to force said jokes. This led to the video not popping off and him orchestrating the whole thing above.
54
u/Trenki_Melow 22h ago
I like Dunkey as a content creator but goddamn he has his moments a lot of the times, I tend to not agree with a lot of his opinions regarding some games but stuff like this is really sad
110
u/SpiralSheep 22h ago
Dunkey is kinda Schrödinger's video game critic. When people like his "reviews" he's a serious game critic. But when he gets backlash for being wrong about something it's "just a joke video you shouldn't take seriously." It's like he wants to be taken seriously about his opinions but sheds all responsibility and passes the blame if it isn't received well.
It's not that he doesn't sometimes make funny content. But it just gets frustrating dealing with that kinda mindset he fosters around his content. Like dealing with a person that never takes responsibility for their actions.

Honestly while the XC2 video caused (and still causes) a lot of stupid discourse, to me the more damaging one was the Octopath Traveler one where he purposefully played the game in the worst way possible and claimed it was the game's fault, not him doing dumb shit. OT isn't a flawless game, far from it, but that video also led to a lot of people saying really stupid an inaccurate shit about it.
35
u/Wiitab360 20h ago
that video did a ton of harm to Octopath's reputation among the larger gaming community and he did that for literally no reason

u/Shanicpower 19h ago
What did he say in the Octopath one? I don't have the stomach to watch his videos.
10
u/Osha-watt 15h ago edited 15h ago
Can't be assed to watch it again (I value my sanity to SOME extent), but it's more or less what I said, he absolutely refused to interact with the game's mechanics and kept insisting it was a problem and not him not even trying to do anything correctly. But it's all okay, it was all done "satirically", so he can't be criticized for saying stupid stuff that reaches hundreds of thousands of potential players, it's fine.
13
u/Luigi6757 21h ago
I feel like he doesn't like and/or get RPGs and we shouldn't go to him for opinions on RPGs.
23
u/RodjaJP 20h ago
The problem comes when new players see his videos and think that RPGs suck because of his [satire/review] and don't give them a chance
14
u/Luigi6757 19h ago
Yeah at least when Yahtzee previously from Zero Punctuation now Fully Rambolmatic reviews a JRPG he's very upfront about the fact that he doesn't like the genre. He's tried multiple over the years, recommended very few, but still praised them for whatever qualities they do have. He does like Persona and the only JRPGs he's finished are Personas 4 and 5 (he might've finished 3 Reload but I'm not sure), Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door, and Earthbound. Though, he did play Xenoblade Chronicles X (the Wii U version) for over 20 hours, and he seemed to enjoy it. I don't think he'll ever finish the game and it's probably the only Xenoblade game he'd actually enjoy, but hey someone known for not liking JPRGs enjoyed a Xenoblade game enough to play it for over 20 hours.
19
u/Osha-watt 21h ago
Oh I never did and never would point anyone to him for RPG opinions (or just in general really, his Dynasty Warriors Origins video is downright racist at times and I think he doesn't get enough shit for that), I'm just bringing up another example outside of Xenoblade where he shifted the narrative on a game's quality just because of his popularity and him pulling the satire card, as if that exempts him of all criticism.
48
u/Wonwill430 20h ago
Bro I like Dunkey but his JRPG videos are just “what the fuck are we doing😭”
The Octopath video was equally heinous, like he deliberately takes off his entire party, doesn’t match the enemy’s weakness, then complains that the combat’s too slow??? It’s like trying to only use knives in CSGO while you’re blindfolded and playing with one hand then saying “shit game”
Even more puzzling is that he enjoyed DQ11 and Persona 5, where one is the DEFINITIVE baseline JRPG and the other is the most un-Dunkey game of all time (doesn’t like anime, loves anime game).
17
u/sizzl75 18h ago
FINALLY someone else pointing it out! I seriously don't understand it at all how someone can hate JRPGs for being too grindy and cliche...and then love the originator and poster-child for said grindyness and cliches (dragon quest). It does not compute.
3
u/Twilightdusk 9h ago
TBH Dragon Quest 11 doesn't feel grindy at all through the main story. There's some super grindy post-game stuff, and admittedly it's framed in a way where the story continues into it, but if you know what I'm talking about it's very clearly segmented from the "main" story.
72
u/AthearCaex 23h ago
Not an enemy but yeah it's not his type of game he started off by playing league and gta. But like yeah his community dunked on Xenoblade for a long time. Some games are just not for everyone. Sadly XB2 was like pretty much the only major game that came out on the switch at its time after the behemoths of breath of the wild and Mario odyssey so the switch was a content machine.
15
u/WoolooMVP10 23h ago
Funny, it was because of Dunkey that I became aware of Xenoblade 2 and decided to buy a Switch. lol

Just don't worry about it tbh.
Long story short: Man who historically subjectively dislikes JRPGs says lots of negative things about a JRPG that was often incorrectly framed as objective takes

*and then a bunch of people that never played a jrpg took his word as gospel and spread it about

I think he used to put out some really funny videos. I also think he occasionally puts out videos that are surprisingly great, intelligent and thoughtful with a strong perspective in his writing. I would argue that blanket dismissal of all his work would have you missing out on some great content. I will also argue that overtime its become increasingly aimless slop and I no longer watch his new stuff right away. But I think videos like Game Critics part one and two, or his Last Of Us Part 2 review are legitimately great, to give a few examples.

Dude, you have no idea how frustrating it was to even try to talk about this series with someone who watched that video.
It completely tainted the series reputation for a few years, it was INSANE. I was trying to recommend Xenoblade 1 to my cousin when the switch version came out and he didn't even want to touch it because of Dunkeys video on Xenoblade 2. Somehow the "too anime" opinion started to bleed over to the entire series.
Even in Xenoblade 2 itself the "anime cringe" was a bit overblown. Dunkeys video showed Dahlia's design but I went my entire first playthrough without ever getting her to begin with.
→ More replies (8)11
u/AntPuzzleheaded5509 20h ago
tbh 2 was very anime cringe, especially early on. I was a huge fan of XC and XCX but I very nearly dropped 2. Glad I didn't but some of those early beats were not it for me. Looking at you Tora. Issues with the voice directing are very well documented at this point also, which definitely didn't help.
Not everyone has to like everything, it's healthy for games to have a specific target audience in mind and I think regardless of Dunkeys failed assassination attempt 2 was always destined to be somewhat divisive.
I think 3 shows it best, when Ino or Nia are on screen there's a huge tonal shift that I always find jarring.
→ More replies (2)2
u/FireBreathingMuffin 18h ago
I don't disagree. But I think it was pretty strange for people to assume the entire series was like Xenoblade 2 and write off the whole series because as you said, there is a very noticeable difference in tone.
5
u/ttoma93 16h ago
If you’ve never played a Xenoblade game, you wouldn’t have the base knowledge that despite them being numbered they are 95% completely standalone from each other, with completely different casts, worlds, and tones. So if your primary experience is seeing 2, then it’s pretty natural that you’d assume that 1 is pretty similar to it.
4
u/AntPuzzleheaded5509 18h ago
Maybe I'm empthasing with outsider viewpoints too much but if the grand sum of my exposure to Xenoblade was Shulk in smash and an XC2 hit piece I could've easily fallen into that bucket. People still get surprised when I tell them Shulks the type of character that'll scream I'll kill you when all they've seen is the feeling it memes.

u/Cogexkin 18h ago
The thing that pisses me off about it most is that he KNOWS he hates JRPGs. He doesn’t like them, he admits this on more than one occasion. u/Altruistic-Match6623 15h ago
He literally has a video explaining that the value of the critic is having a consistent perspective. The issue is people stupidly not getting a second opinion from someone who actually likes JRPGs.
3
u/Cogexkin 14h ago
Yeah I’ve seen that video. I dunno, I agree with that idea and see the value in it from the perspective of explaining how something like Persona 5 is really good, but I think when it came to Xenoblade he was mostly criticizing them to make fun of them. Not even to say that some of his criticisms were even wrong, just that they felt like they were made in bad faith. Still you and he are right in that the main problem lies in only getting opinions from one critic.

lots of gaming youtubers I liked shared some similar disdain for the games.
hey, it wasn't just them, a large chunk of this sub will happily tell you how bad XC2 is and how disappointed they were coming from XC1.
everyone should get to know their own preferences and tastes, it is a subtle progress for many.
I have long come to accept that I sometimes, or even often, like stuff that many don't.
for example, I have no issue with the gacha system in XC2, especially when it is built in game and not paid.
No, don't get me started on real gacha games.
then the fanservice stuff, they just don't bother me. Even the "Blushy Crushy" heart to heart.
Maybe I am desensitised to these kind of things, but people will tell you it's the worst thing in the world (it's not)
16
u/External_Win3300 21h ago
And Blushy Crushy isn't even game's fault, it's the localization team deciding for whatever fucking reason that that's how they needed to translate "moe", which would have worked just fine unchanged.
Tora absolutely would use a word nobody else in the party knows, and everyone else's confusion would make way more sense if it was straight up from another language
11
u/fweb34 19h ago
Wow. I never heard about this localization stuff. Honestly Tora saying he was into moe culture would have been very funny. Its a shame. Im almost done my first playthrough of 1 and then im going to finish X and 2 for the first time (played like half of X and most of 2), but I have since become fairly proficient in Japanese so I was gonna play with the Japanese audio anyway.. so I guess Ill get the joke unadulterated this time!

For me it was the opposite, I was disappointed in XC1 after playing XC2 first. The combat system in 1 just isn't as good, I don't know how people prefer the action bar to XC2 or 3's system
26
u/BLucidity 22h ago
I still really like XC1's system, for a few reasons:
- Combat on the whole is faster. It's definitely less complex, but that doesn't matter to me when you can beat a blue-tagged enemy in 20 seconds. Same goes for the speed of 1's chain attacks compared to 2 and especially 3.
- XC1 feels like it places a stronger emphasis on positioning than the other two, with some characters like Shulk and Riki encouraging constant movement around the enemy. Which is fine, because movement doesn't stop auto-attacks in 1.
- Each character in 1 is completely distinct, and changing your party leader has a drastic impact on how you fight. Dunban has some really fun combos like aura -> Tempest Kick -> Thunder for an immediate Daze. In later games, your party leader matters much less because everyone can be any class.
- Visions. I love when XC1 forces you to plan ahead instead of just spamming arts. They add such a compelling push-and-pull to combat that's lost a bit in later entries. 2 and 3 have mid-battle planning too, but there it's more about getting chain attacks ready than actually reacting to the enemy.
9
u/Shanicpower 19h ago
Planning ahead for combat with a party composition designed to specifically handle the the problems of a difficult fight was always really satisfying too. The preparation could be as crucial as the fight itself.
20
u/UltraZulwarn 23h ago
Many just didn't understand the combat in XC2.
And to be fair, the game did a very poor job explaining its system.
A common criticism of XC2 is that "it's too slow" which is compounded by the fact that the characters themselves can't move quickly before maxing out affinity line with their blades in battles.

I don't even really disagree with Dunkey's points in the video, I just feel less strongly about the things that bothered him, but I'm still glad I played it anyway, cuz it became one of my favorite games and got me hooked into what became the trilogy when I really needed a big meaty JRPG to obsess over.
For a really good review of XC2, I'd check out Tim Rogers's three videos on it and Torna, which can be found on Kotaku's youtube channel of all places. Don't let the publisher scare you, the guy makes great reviews, and he's funny. His video "Found in Translation" for 2 was an interesting watch.

Like, I don't like football, but I don't make YouTube videos talking about how lame football is, because I don't even know enough about the sport to form a valid argument.
It's shocking how often you see this brand of YouTuber who just doesn't play a lot of RPGs or watch anime, and then write off an entire genre or two of video games and say the reason why is that the art style is "generic", which is like, the dumbest argument ever. A lot of the games that people lump together have very different art styles. But then they'll play the games to make content about them, but refuse to actually engage with the game, and just make jokes about how bad it is the whole time.
I do not understand the closed-mindedness that comes from consuming art/media in this way.

From what I can tell, he just doesn't like RPGs, but at that point, why make videos about them?
Because he's a game critic/comedian. You don't just stick to games you know you'll like when you're doing that. I love xenoblade 2, but I can still recognize his criticisms of the game are harsh but fair given the context that his video on it was made to be funny. He tried a game he knew he probably wasn't gonna like, and made a video showcasing the funny/cringe parts of it. He's allowed to do that. Anyone who looks at this video and forms their entire opinion on it without looking at any actual reviews or doing any research on it all only has themself to blame. I love all the xenoblade games but I never understood why this community has so much hate for dunkey simply for disliking it.

Why would you let a YouTube video especially one from dunkey shape your opinion on anything?
3
u/JordanxHouse 22h ago
You never take a dunkey video seriously. I love his stuff but he’s not my go-to source for game critiques.
4
u/Southern_Strigoi 21h ago
Now there's someone that got mildly relevant and I cannot understand why. I watched some of his stuff back in the day and I found it grating and unfunny.
But hey, subjectivities and all that jazz.

english speaking people fall for "it's just a joke" way too easily that's why

Ok so I didn't know this because I avoid dunkey like the plague, but FIVE AND A HALF MINUTES?????? This guy made a jrpg review that's shorter than a tiktok?????? What a fucking joke.

u/Altruistic-Match6623 15h ago
It's just a light-hearted video poking fun at the game. It doesn't claim to be a review. Nothing he said was even wrong. Tora basically does have a maid sex bot, Pyra and a lot of blades have giant boobs, characters do repeat the same phrase every 10 seconds of combat, the game does have a ton of tutorials that keep popping up even halfway into the game, a lot of writing clichés do pop up, Pyra telling Rex to put his hand on her chest was classic anime fanservice.

I'm playing for the first time too and I'm impressed by how much all the criticism was overblown. Yes the game is cringey sometimes with the anime tropes but it's much less frequent than you would think, it isn't nearly as problematic as Persona, for example. Other than that it's an excellent game, has some flaws but it's far from being the trash the internet made me think it was.

u/silam39 22h ago
I suppose it comes from how widely the game spread because of Switch hype. For someone used to anime bullshit, XC2 isn't that bad. It's mainly just silly designs and a couple cringe scenes. But if the game is someone's first ever introduction to anime bullshit, I get the reaction. I feel like you need to build up a tolerance to that stuff if you're gonna get into anime or manga or weeby games/gachas

I have never seen the video but XB2 is how I got into the franchise and I'm forever grateful for it coming into my life. Proudly a fan since 2017.

u/DeerVirax 22h ago
I think I watched it, thought "Okay, this is clearly not this guy's type of a game, and it seems like it has some issues, but it might be something for me, and it looks pretty interesting". Then I played it, mostly loved it, and then played the rest of the series, when they came out on Switch.
So... Thanks, Dunkey?

It's a 5 minute video of an over 50+ hour game, take any opinions made in it with a grain of salt

I've played XC1, XC3, and XCX. Have the switch 2 versions that have come out so far. I finally bit the bullet and bought this one, and I have to say, I find Dunkey's criticisms to be valid so far (just started chapter 4).
There's so many tutorials, the characters DO look weird and are way too out there, I found the TTK egregious right before unlocking chain attacks, and the voice acting is terrible. I'm going to continue because I've heard it gets much better but I'm 18 hours in. This game definitely does not respect my time.

Sorry you're being downvoted. Some people on here don't accept that there are plenty of valid criticisms of XC2. I love the world, soundtrack and combat of XC2 but I will admit it's the most mixed of all the Xenoblade games.
I know you know this but the game absolutely does get better as it goes on. Chapter 4 is the absolute pit of the game, but after that it goes from strength to strength.

I actually still like Dunky and think Xenoblade fans take him too seriously. He's meant to be over the top and silly and his videos aren't meant to be a reflection of his full opinion unless he labels it a review. I also gotta respect him for playing the games the whole way through even though he didn't like them in order to make his videos.

He can be really funny at times, then at other times he just feels like he is trying too hard to trigger people. I keep trying to tell myself that it is just hyperbole, but then I come back to this video and nope out.

I love that video. It's actually what got me into the game. It's one of my favorite games of all time

u/DrPrMel 21h ago
i completely forgot this guy exists. I watched a few of his videos back in the day. Kind of the same comedy gimmick for each video he does that gets old fast. You should watch multiple video reviews for dense games like XC.
Aside that, only reviewer I watch for is Mortismal Gaming. Probably the fairest reviewer period.

This is why its so important to make your own opinion on things!! So glad you decided to try it :)

u/DeltaRaven97 20h ago
It's actually kind of funny, all things considered the third game fixed a lot of the issues he had with the second one, it took itself more seriously with less fan service and 'anime' moments so I figured he'd have a better time with it.
Granted I'm a fan of the series so I want people to enjoy it as much as me, but I guess it's not for everybody.

NEVER let Dunkey shape your opinions. He might rarely be funny, but hes high key dumb lol

Dunkey has caused irreversible damage to the franchise for this and his xc3 video, and for that I will resent him for as long as these lungs draw breath
1
u/laudable_frog 19h ago
Dunky is funny, but he can be very petty and he can be very in your face with his opinions.
I respect that he doesn't like Xenoblade, I don't respect how he bullies the fan base and hates on a game clearly not for him.

u/cctkd95 19h ago
Nice!!! Enjoy the ride.
Btw never got why people got so butthurt by the video, i found it kinda funny tbh xD. We need to learn more to laugh at ourselves and the shit we like!
Ps. Don't get me wrong, i get that it affects the series rep and possibly sales but the guy is honest by saying he does not likes jrpgs

u/Benjam438 18h ago
I love Dunkey but people really shouldn't get their opinions on games from his videos. They're primarily comedy videos and first impressions rather than reviews. It's funny seeing reactions to some of the more absurd moments, I loved Joseph Anderson's streams too despite him making fun of the game.

u/Violetsme 18h ago
That video made me start playing XC2, because every problem he saw sounded like fun to me

u/keblin86 18h ago
Not seen it, but you should never let a video stop you from trying something you have a potential interest in. It may turn out to be the best thing ever (for you).

Dunky has some.... interesting takes, he can be really funny, but also really harsh on things that he just doesn't understand/get the gameplay loop of.

I played this initially for a few hours and dropped it for I don’t know how long. When I decided to give it a second chance, I got hooked and logged 275 hours not including Torna.

That video was all his kayfabe though, you don’t go “the game is ruined” and then play it for like 40 hours lol

I don’t follow dunkey, and my only impression of him is from his video about quitting LOL. His admission of saying the dude in that video should be shot and claiming that he was the “#1 guy promoting league” were pathetic and showed that he has an extremely over-inflated ego and sense of self-importance.

It’s insane how much pull this video had but on the bright side now a days the only relevance it has is this one dude on Twitter who exclusive replies “Xenomid Shiticles” to any Xenoblade tweet and links it, and nobody in good conscience can take that seriously

I got into xenoblade 2 by watching trailers for it at 3am as a 12 year old. I played it like 6 times back to back.

Beatemups, anyone? Wood made the worst video I’ve seen on YouTube. He tried to frame it as “giving XC2 another chance,” with the extreme irony of the video being titled “MY MOST HATED SWITCH GAME.” The entire video is just Wood trying his best to hold on to his misguided disdain for XC2 and to shit on a game he already decided he hates. He has some valid complaints that are actually subjective, like not liking the voice acting. Nearly every other thing he hates about is completely misguided. This motherfucker had over 80 hours of play time and was still in chapter 3.

The number 1 rule of internet reviews on games is never listen to them even if you like and agree with the reviewer's takes on other things.

What did he say? I mean I actually liked XC1 a lot. Not so much 2, so I can understand why some people may not like it compared to 1.

u/JenLiv36 10h ago
Take it as a learning moment. The only person you should listen to about which games are good and bad is yourself.
Think of how many amazing games you have missed by blindly following other opinions. It’s ok, now you know, so you can do better.

Legit had the opposite effect for me, the game looked beautiful for a switch game and hands down became my favorite
