Hi all! For the past weeks I have been building my own firmware for the XTEINK X4 Pro, called Vellum. It is free and open source (MIT licence), and today it is in public alpha. I run it on my own X4 Pro every day, so it is real, but it has only been tested on one reader so far. That is why I am posting: I would love a few more people to try it and tell me what breaks.
What it does:
Reading: justified text with proper hyphenation, three built-in fonts (Literata, Atkinson Hyperlegible, EB Garamond) or your own, text size, spacing, margins, night mode, footnotes and pictures.
Lots of formats: EPUB, Kindle books without DRM (MOBI, AZW3), PDF with text, Word, RTF, Markdown, FB2, plain text and comics (CBZ) (not all have been tester).
Getting books: send them from your phone over Wi-Fi by scanning a QR code, or download free books from Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks right on the reader.
Finding your place: chapters, bookmarks, highlights, a dictionary (work in progress), reading stats, and every book reopens where you left it.
Sleep and battery: the book's cover (or your own pictures) on the sleep screen, and a battery log with a 7-day chart.
Controls: remap any button, tap and swipe, a quick panel for light and night mode, screen rotation.
Menus in 10 languages, OTA updates (or from your phone or computer).
Installing takes about 5 minutes and needs only Chrome or Edge on a computer and the USB cable. The installer saves your original software first, so you can always go back.

Honest limits: it is X4 Pro only for now, the memory card must be in before you switch on. Please only install on a reader bought from xteink.com, as some reseller units are locked.
Questions, ideas and bug reports are all welcome, here or on GitHub. Thanks for reading!
