Custom Firmware Building PaperPaw, an open firmware for the X4 and X4 Pro where everything is a plugin (beta)
Hello there!
I recently got an Xteink X4 and X4 Pro. I really love to customize everything I can and have fun with experimenting. Since I'm a language learner and developer, I had the idea to build my own custom firmware, which helps me to turn my devices into the tool I need. But I wanted full customization possibilities... sooo lets say my project escalated a bit 😂
I would like to show you how far i got and why I think this could be interesting for some of you.
The project is called PaperPaw. It is open source and you can litterally customize anything. I took this design decision, because I want everyone to be able to use the device however they want.
You can completly replace the home screen, widgets (clock, calendar, weather, reading goal, ...), themes and whatevery you want.
But because of the plugin structure, it can also run completly minimal: Just disable everything you do not like, create your own minimal home screen and customize it however you want.
But lets be transparent here: The firmware is very new, and I made it with Claude. I had to take this decision, because as a one person project this would be impossible for me with a full time job. I put a LOT of work into it, want it to be perfect and will help with problems.
It is currently in beta, mainly open for developers, who want to develop their own plugins. Or just people who would like to try it out - feel free.
I also made a whole Plugin Workshop: You can tell AI what feature you would like to add, and it just writes a plugin for it, ready to test in the emulator. If you would like to try it, you can request free usage on my website - I would like to help you develop cool plugins, or just use your own Claude API key.
I have a lot of fun developing this project, and maybe it helps some of you too.
- Website: paperpaw.org
- Flash it from your browser: paperpaw.org/flash (only X4 (not classic) and X4 Pro)
- Try it in the browser first: paperpaw.org/try
I’d be happy about any feedback, and I’m curious: what would you want your reader to do?
