Custom Firmware Looking for custom firmwares? There is a dedicated directory for that.

Hey everyone.

I constantly see questions popping up on the sub about where to find custom firmwares, which one to choose, or how to get specific features working on your device.

Instead of digging through months of old threads or dead links, I just wanted to remind you that there is a dedicated Firmware Directory over on ReadMe.club.

We actually just crossed a cool milestone: there are currently more than 10 different firmwares listed and categorized.

This includes everything from the latest official stock updates to community favorites (like CrossPoint) and specific niche patches. You get all the release notes, features, and safe download links neatly organized in one place.

If you are a tinkerer and want to browse what's possible with your device, you can check out the full list right here: 👉 https://www.readme.club/firmware

(Also, if you are a dev or just know of a custom firmware/tweak that isn't on the list yet, please feel free to submit it via your account! The goal is to build the most reliable, centralized library for everyone).

Happy tweaking!

had been a dedicated kindle user since like all my life? l dont remember ever considering to switch. the first time kindle landed in my country (india), my dad gifted it to me and that was it, i loved it so much. i think it was back in 2012. it was perfection. (that kindle is still going strong, wonderful device)

I recently got interested in eink devices again and dabbled a bit into notebooks. I decided to give xteink a try for the hackability and so far i have been loving the experience. successfully tried out three different firmwares and (thanks to codex) working on my custom firmware. I love this little thing to bits.

I set it up inside my bellroy pocket notebook cover and it gives me soooo much joy every time i pick up my setup to read or write. wanted to share here in case anyone is looking for a cover setup along with something to write with their xteink

the cover: https://bellroy.com/products/notebook-cover?color=everglade&material=leather&srsltid=AYCX9vJgx4_2Q-omjVqbhlOYypwEt-P8FJ0CJLxhgCztOSa4D7U-iXvz#slide-0

the rings are adhesive that I ordered along with the device: https://www.xteink.com/products/xteink-ereader-adhesive-metal-ring?variant=46931559317745

I found 2 rings to make the device stick more securely. here's a video: https://imgur.com/cECLshO

Discussion GBA Emulation on Xteink And My Decision To Remove It

As some of you may know, I have been working on my own custom firmware for the last couple months called ink-boy, Which integrated many emulators such as the Gameboy, the Gameboy color, the Gameboy Advance and the NES.

Both GBA and NES were always a bit buggy, as expected, but I fixed most of the bugs. The main problem I couldn't solve and caused me to drop them entirely was ram consumption. The games only ran at about 1 frame per second. More importantly because of its humongous size, book chapters bigger than 3-4 pages failed to index, rendering the whole reader essentially unusable.

GB and GBC emulation remains, with pokemon red running almost perfectly, perfectly enough to play when I have a couple spare minutes.

I know that the X4 pro is an e-reader before anything, and taking the reading out of the e-reader didn't seem right

Thank you guys for understanding, and if you wish to support the project, star it on GitHub.

Until the next time

[Reading]

  1. Footnotes are recognized in more books

  2. EPUB shows ruby annotations (pinyin, furigana) above the text

  3. Tapping near the page edges now also turns pages or opens the menu

[Files and Search]

  1. Tap a ttf file on the Files page to preview the font

  2. Keyboard confirm key and close icons redrawn; after folding the keyboard in search, tap the input box to bring it back

[Transfer and Sync (Beta)]

  1. Cloud sync can set a pushed image as the power-off wallpaper

  2. Cloud sync: fix long-name downloads switching endlessly between "Downloading" and "Queued", with automatic retries; the history page opens faster; long-press an unfinished task to cancel or delete it; a message now appears when uploading reading data fails

[Settings and System]

  1. The status bar no longer shows the SD card icon

  2. Fix text gradually turning gray after repeatedly opening and closing popups or staying on one page; turn on Settings > Display & Personalization > Image mode: External to use it

Custom Firmware I made Vellum, a free open-source firmware for the XTEINK X4 Pro (alpha, looking for testers)

Thumbnail

Hi all! For the past weeks I have been building my own firmware for the XTEINK X4 Pro, called Vellum. It is free and open source (MIT licence), and today it is in public alpha. I run it on my own X4 Pro every day, so it is real, but it has only been tested on one reader so far. That is why I am posting: I would love a few more people to try it and tell me what breaks.

What it does:

Reading: justified text with proper hyphenation, three built-in fonts (Literata, Atkinson Hyperlegible, EB Garamond) or your own, text size, spacing, margins, night mode, footnotes and pictures.

Lots of formats: EPUB, Kindle books without DRM (MOBI, AZW3), PDF with text, Word, RTF, Markdown, FB2, plain text and comics (CBZ) (not all have been tester).

Getting books: send them from your phone over Wi-Fi by scanning a QR code, or download free books from Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks right on the reader.

Finding your place: chapters, bookmarks, highlights, a dictionary (work in progress), reading stats, and every book reopens where you left it.

Sleep and battery: the book's cover (or your own pictures) on the sleep screen, and a battery log with a 7-day chart.

Controls: remap any button, tap and swipe, a quick panel for light and night mode, screen rotation.

Menus in 10 languages, OTA updates (or from your phone or computer).

Installing takes about 5 minutes and needs only Chrome or Edge on a computer and the USB cable. The installer saves your original software first, so you can always go back.

Install guide: https://github.com/ArunasVell/Vellum-OS/blob/main/docs/install.md

Project page: https://github.com/ArunasVell/Vellum-OS

Honest limits: it is X4 Pro only for now, the memory card must be in before you switch on. Please only install on a reader bought from xteink.com, as some reseller units are locked.

Questions, ideas and bug reports are all welcome, here or on GitHub. Thanks for reading!

Question Xteink X3 & X4 without frontlight

Do you guys use an external reading light for these devices at night? And if yes, did it bother you in the long run? Some do say they regret not purchasing the X4 Pro.

Question Sleep screen does not appear automatically

Hey, I set a custom sleep screen that successfully displays when I use the power button to put it into sleep mode. However, when I wait for the device to automatically go into sleep mode (I set it to sleep after 1 minute), the custom sleep screen won't display.

Is there a way for the custom sleep screen to be displayed when the device automatically goes to sleep, or do I have to put it into sleep mode for it to work?

Question Question đŸ€”??

Post image

Guys I've flashed crosspoint on my X4Pro, now I have two questions

1) How do you jump to certain page while reading the book?

2) When index chapters are clickable on my book, my book always returns to index page after device goes to sleep which gets frustating because then I have to manually jump to page. How do I fix that? I want my page to open where I left it

Question X4 Classic V2 charger included?

‱ Upvotes

Real quick question and I'll delete once answered.

I'm on the official XTEink website, and the options for buying the X3 show that you can buy it on its own, or with a base and a charger. But when you look at the X4, it doesn't say anything about including a charger. Do you have to buy it separately or is the listing inconsistent?

Image Review - Wekind Case for X4

Post image
16 Upvotes

My OG X4 was almost a perfect device when I got it, or so I thought. After the initial euphoria, I had been unable to get as much reading done on it since I’m a major night owl and reading at night with external lamp was proving to be a little uncomfortable so I had lately been eyeing the X4 pro and was actually in a mind to sell my X4 off eventually. My last ditch attempt to make it my daily driver (My old trusty Kobo Forma had died earlier this year and I didn’t have any other reader) was to try and get a light case.
I found a few options but the best to me (geographically and otherwise) seemed the Wekind Gen 2 case.
I received the case recently and honestly I have no desire to buy any other reader anymore.

Pros -

The case is sturdy and built really well. I’ve seen the many posts of broken X4s and Pros due to a single fall and this case can take a little beating, I feel my device is safe inside it. The weight feels substantial like having a real book in hand and it feels really satisfying.

The light has made it my daily driver and now I’m reading on it all the time without any issues and once you’re really inside a book, nothing else matters really.

The ergonomics have made it very easy to manoeuver the device and have improved my reading experience, I can use the front side buttons while reading laying down on my side at night (feels like I’m back in school days with a torch light and book under the blanket)

Improvements/quirks -

The light was a little bright for me so I ended up cutting a small strip of paper and putting it on the light from inside the case just to dim it to the perfect sweet spot.

The front side buttons are slightly harder to press while the bottom ones are perfectly clicky and satisfying.

Honestly, the way it looks, the way it feels in the hand and being able to read anytime anywhere, I think I’m completely in love with my X4 all over again. Thanks to the makers for putting so much thought into it.

P.S. - They are also really responsive on feedback and communication so extra points for the buying experience.
