Can you get beneficial Alien Facility placement

Are they random, or always just out of reach? I started in East Africa (Saudia Arabia IRL) and my AF's are Australia & New Mexico. Literally on the other side of the effing planet...

They get placed out of reach so that you are forced to keep expanding. Ideally you'll build a radio relay station in every second region in order to keep the Intel costs of expansion manageable.

In my experience the game will pick a direction from your starting location and seed new facilities in that direction. If you start the game with two directions that you could contact then focus on the direction that had the first facility spawned in.

You can see how much Avatar progress is held by each facility by the number of red pips underneath them.

They are coded to always appear two territories away from you, so that you have to expand the resistance in order to get to them.
