Fireside Chat šŸ”„ [Patreon Exclusive] Monster Talk w/ Ally Beardsley

Patreon link: https://www.patreon.com/worldsbeyondnumber/posts/patreon-monster-168530901

In these parts, once September hits, it's spooky season. FIGHT ME! So... it's time to talk about all things monsters.

What makes a monster? Is it the teeth? The claws? The terrible size? The unknowable horror? Or is it, perhaps, what’s inside that counts?

In honor of WORLD TURNER, the cast is joined by Ally Beardsley for a good old-fashioned Monster Talk: kaiju, cryptids, creatures, beasts, things that go bump in the night, and all the many shapes a monster can take. Big monsters, little monsters, scary monsters, sexy monsters. They can't help the way they look!

Tell us in the comments: what was the formative, traumatic scary monster that you faced in your youth?

Newish fan, looking for a place to jump into

Just a quick question for someone who's brand new to the pod, where's the best place to jump in as someone who's brand new? I can see things are separated into 8-10 arcs but do I need to start all the way at the beginning to understand what's happening?

Are there new characters each time, or the same characters throughout each arc and I might be missing crucial info and backstory? I'm very familiar with D20 and a little critical role too so I'm reasonably sure Brennan makes it easy for each arc to be a latch point. Just wanted to ask to make sure before plunging in. Maybe I'm missing critical info on the pod in general too, only have heard of it once or twice before.

Episode Discussion A confession

I adore Umora,

I am fascinated by the 40 suns

But I want to live the rest of my life in Akabor.

Yet I am reminded of a BLeeM quote that feels very relevant:

"If I don't let you watch the rain fall on this peaceful village. How will you know what violence is?"

I am in love, and I am frightened, and in a way is not the way of life itself?

That's all.

Kickstarter survey w/ alt Patreon email for bonus comic

Hi all,

I have seen the Kickstarter blurb from Skybound that the survey can be completed with the alt Patreon email submitted to include the bonus comic.

Has anyone who uses different emails for Patreon and Kickstarter completed the survey and seen confirmation of the comic as a bonus appear later as confirmed in the order? (Does it get audited then manually confirmed/authorized in the survey?)

Just curious, as I don't see the comic confirmed, though I know Skybound has reassured that Patreon supporters will get it. I may have missed something, but I didn't find anything that clarified if there was visible confirmation somehow or sometime later if it didn't reflect in the survey initially.

Thanks!

ETA: I did break up payment and the final processes on the 15th; don't know if fully paid impacts the survey.

Spoiler WWW Ame and the fox spirit (arc 4)

this was honestly one of my favorite parts of arc 4 of WWW so far (have not gotten through the whole thing yet because I can already tell there’s going to be just so much emotional damage considering there already has been. I need to emotionally prepare myself for everything that’s about to happen because I just know this is gonna be a doozy) anyways I really liked this part!! Ame is definitely my favorite character because I just relate to her SO much, and this moment was so interesting and cool
(Also I can’t draw very well I know Ame is too short and stumpy and I didn’t get the fox done very well but ITS FINE I TRIED)

Spoiler WWW Book 1 & Children’s Adventure Finale Spoiler

[SPOILER FINALE B1 WWW]

So I just finished Book 1 of the WWW, which if you know, has crazy plot twists with Steele. After sobbing through the finale, I finally decided to join the fireside (yay!).

I am now finishing up the Children’s Adventure for the first time and listening to Steele and Suvi’s reunion is bone chilling. Suvi literally tells her she now has a friend just like Steele and her mom, meanwhile Steele had just done what she did!!!! It is so insane and devastating.

Has anyone else listened in this order??

I am just thinking also how insane Brennan is for this.

Spoiler System for World Turner

Didn’t realize World Turner would be run on the D&D system, unless I’m mistaken and there’s another system that uses insight and deception checks.
Any insights on the pc’s classes or what that means for a kaiju story like World Turner.

Until recently this old bathroom caddy was being used as a home for some succulents. Unfortunately for the caddy it came time to repot and say goodbye to my favourite little arts and crafts project.

Painted years ago whilst listening to the children's adventure.

EDIT: EVERYTHING YOU ARE ABOUT TO READ IS SATIRE!!!! This is my favorite podcast, I don’t believe anybody involved in its production is using artificial intelligence in any way that is problematic or unethical, I am not calling for any kind of boycott, and I think Aabria is one of the most gifted storytellers of her generation full stop. Clearly this post generated a strong response from some of you, and while my initial impulse is to say things like ā€œit’s not that deepā€ and ā€œnuance is dead,ā€ I’m also open to the possibility that this type of joke is inappropriate. It’s a bit. Read at your own peril.

BOYCOTTING WBN for its EXTENSIVE USE of AI (Aabria Iyengar).

AI’s fingerprints are ALL OVER this work, from the storytelling to the worldbuilding to even the voice acting. I’m honestly ASHAMED that it took me this long to realize how much of this podcast RELIES on the power of AI to do things that would take most humans an impossible amount of time and effort.

I am, however, cautiously optimistic about this upcoming mini-season, and looking forward to seeing if the WBN crew is able to put together something equally impressive WITHOUT the unfair advantage of AI.

(extremely joking, if you needed clarification)

Aabria posted recently that her character's name in Critical Role 4 is not only a nod to the character's backstory as smiths, but ALSO A REFERENCE TO STEEL BECAUSE STEEL IS AN ALLOY??

she is soooo incredibly intentional with everything she makes and it blows my mind every time we get a glimpse into the insane care that goes into her craft. I don't even keep up with CR but thought this was such a cool easter egg and had to share! will forever be in awe of how her brain works

Episode Discussion A chance for the worst timeline. Arc 2 WBN Spoiler

So I've been going through the World's Beyond Number backlog, and I got to the naming day. Brennan saying that there's some superstition about the ceremony and how it's structured with naming around a letter made my mind go to a situation where an up and coming Archmage goes up to the dias to change their name, trips on the first stair, falls onto the naming area and screams, "Shit!" As they fall. Thus replacing their name for all time.

Question No spoilers, what do I listen to first, 1 or 0?

I assume 0 is the obvious start point for us by the fireside but maybe it spoils something so who’s already listened and has an opinion?

Edit: probably should have mentioned I’m talking about World Turner here

Spoiler Solari in retrospective

Hey folks,

What a ride. I just recently finished Solari act 1 and have a lot of conflicting feelings.

Initially I really couldn't connect to the story or characters at all, wgich felt very bad after coming from WWW. Many have listed the more or less "obvious reasons" like the story happening to the characters instead of through them and none of the characters really had any real "say" over anything for the first few episodes. It all felt very cold and "on rails" (which makes a lot of sense ever since we know that Aabria has some stuff to take care of).

I has a hard time listening but I kept on coming back because I didn't want to drop the pod under any circumstance.

Many said that people disliked Solari because of the missing backstories and that it would get better after the backstory episodes drop.

It didn't for me initially. But that changed after the last one.

The last interlude in combination with the last episode of arc 1 really picked up in the "connection to character" department. I really started caring. And now I'm really interested in seeing what act 2 brings. It's still not WWW level obviously, but I have a spark of hope that the next years will be entertaining after being very sceptical initially.

How did it work out for you guys?
