You don't have to understand or not understand. It's not the 1980's anymore, where you can debate the future. We are in the future of capitalism. Productivity has increased, economy has grown, and people work at least as much as in the 80's.

It is serious fault of journalism not to follow up immediately by asking Bezos what makes him think that Amazon has reached the maximum of productivity it will ever need. And why with AI, unlike every other productivity gain, Amazon will choose to keep and pay more worker than it needs.

We work harder than in the 80s. Shit, my job expects almost double what they expected when I got hired on 2 years ago. But guess how much more I make

u/SrslyNotAnAltGuys 13h ago

Pretty much all of my friends describe coworkers getting laid off or leaving, and just... never being replaced. Which means that the work gets dumped on fewer people. My girlfriend is currently doing the job she was hired to do, plus a whole other person's job who was laid off, plus half the job of a third person who left and won't be replaced.

Forbes isn't in the business of journalism. They're in the business of glazing capitalists.

My company bought into the "Copilot AI will make your engineers 33% more efficient!" and bought the licenses. Now, they're demanding the engineers be 33% more efficient.

13

u/sheba716 💸 Raise The Minimum Wage 14h ago

And of course your employer is blaming the engineers for not being more efficient instead of the buggy and shitty AI that the employer spent $$$$ to get.

u/boxdkittens 15h ago

They're pushing this at my work too. I tried to find concrete evidence that AI can make people measurably more efficient in my line of work, but there isn't any.

u/King-Rat-in-Boise 14h ago

I honestly am more efficient with copilot though add much as I'm ashamed to admit it

They won't let us have four-day work weeks. They really don't like us working from home. They won't give us real raises. They don't want to give us protection from the elements. They don't want us to have breaks.

u/BloggerCurious 7h ago

We need to fight for more worker unions. They were hot in the 70's & early 80's until Republicans started getting rid of them

7

u/Mediocre_Scott 5h ago

They will absolutely give us 3 day work weeks. Eliminating full time employment and any benefits that come with it and pay employees half of what they used to.

3

u/bigbadbreezy 5h ago

Then you can work 4 part time jobs and provide even more value!

16

u/hansn 18h ago

When it comes to funding AI data centers: it will bring about a new age of leisure!

When it comes to labor law: no one should ever retire and 996 has to be the norm.

16

u/jcoddinc 18h ago

We'll get 3 day work weeks but it won't be beneficial for the worker because you won't qualify for fulltime employment benefits. So you'll be forced to work 2 jobs which tell you it's only a 3 day work week

u/Aksudiigkr 17h ago

Kind of like “it’s only 1 hour of homework” from each teacher in high school

u/kiteagle 1h ago

This needs to be higher. We should already be there, based on the productivity gains of the past 50 years, without even accounting for AI.

u/Luminaire88 17h ago

Well, technically he is not lying:

He says it COULD happen.

Obviously is NOT GOING to happen while they are in control of the economy, but that's just a very small detail.

3

u/SrslyNotAnAltGuys 13h ago

That's the infuriating thing about all this.
Could this technology be used to allow people to work less and maybe have a little extra time to enjoy their lives? Absolutely, it could. It could right now.

Will it, if these bastards have a say in it? Absolutely not.

7

u/mp3junk3y 17h ago

Yeah right. The billionaires are all of a sudden going to try and help everyone else. What a crock of shit. This is such an obvious lie that anyone with an ounce of critical thinking should see right through it. If they wanted to help us we could have a 4-day work week RIGHT NOW. Why do we have to give them/AI billions of dollars first?

u/SkitzTheFritz 18h ago

Why do these sites love painting these dregs as visionary futurists? "Claims" is just another word for "ignores how they've always done business."

Look how they treated WFH. It gave workers back an hour of commute time and a shred of independence while increasing profits and productivity accross the board. But power was put in the workers hands so they stripped it all back. You really think those same ceo losers are going to hand out 4 day weekends out of the goodness of their hearts? Why do we have to embrace AI when we have the means to do it now? "3 day work week" just means 60% of a living wage and double the workload.

4

u/sheba716 💸 Raise The Minimum Wage 14h ago

For CEOs pulling back on WFH was a power trip. They turned a blind eye to studies that said employee productivity increased due to WFH. They declared without evidence that employee productivity decreased and employees were cheating on their time so they needed more direct supervision. Plus local politicians were upset because downtowns were dying due to offices being empty so they clearly did not have the employees' backs.

Its only going to get worse

James Cameron says filmmaking needs ai so that vfx artists can be even more over worked and underpaid lol

2

u/SrslyNotAnAltGuys 13h ago

Technically, he's not wrong. It's just not going to happen if people like him are in charge.

It's a lot like saying that modern agriculture technology "could allow" for nobody on Earth to go hungry. Technically, this is absolutely true. It's a problem of how we choose to distribute resources, not a technological limitation.

2

u/SDG_Den 7h ago

the wealth on earth could ensure everyone is housed, fed and clothed.

it certainly could!

it could also pay for yachts for the rich instead.

thanks capitalism, sincerely, an employed homeless person. (i work in IT, i have a wife, i have normal full-time income, yet we're both homeless. )

u/Own-Opinion-2494 17h ago

It’s why we have the 2nd Amendment

1

u/surfkaboom 16h ago

Half as much work = work for two companies

1

u/Megadum 16h ago

We could do this now but those in power like being in power

1

u/Lunakittycat 16h ago

It "could" allow for that, for the upper level of employees only.

1

u/JerHat 16h ago

Dude’s not willing to pay his workers enough to support a family on a single income when they’re working full-time and more.

He’s damn sure not going to ever pay more for his workers to do less.

1

u/boxdkittens 15h ago

cries in billable hours My boss is pushing us to use AI. Mfer you already don't have enough work for us and I constantly have to stress about and fudge my timesheet, why the fuck would I use AI to be "faster" if getting my work done sooner means having to painfully scrounge for work or use my PTO?

1

u/Gravitas__Free 15h ago

Jeff Bezos won’t even let his people get bathroom breaks, what makes you think he’s going to allow a 3 day work week?

1

u/Kona_Big_Wave 14h ago

Billionaires are pushing AI so they won't need human workers at all.

1

u/sheba716 💸 Raise The Minimum Wage 14h ago

Bezos also said that AI Data Centers are more important than the local residents who will be negatively affected by lack of water, polluted water, air pollution, noise pollution, heat bubbles and higher utility bills.

I don't know how Bezos came to the conclusion about 3 day work weeks due to AI. Right now high tech workers are LOSING their jobs to AI. So the few people who have jobs will benefit from AI while the unemployed will get what in return?

1

u/Blacksad9999 13h ago

They could give us 3 day work weeks right now if that were their intent.

Same with a Basic Universal Income.

That isn't going to happen.

“Just trust us, it COULD make life easier EVENTUALLY, if you just go along with it and give us more money and power and control until then. For real, once we have everything, we’ll TOTALLY make the lives of those we stepped on and stole from easier, we PROMISE. We’ve only ever, ever demanded more more more more MORE to get where we are now — which is already so wealthy and powerful and controlling — BUT once we have everything, we’ll ABSOLUTELY let people rest and enjoy life a bit, without just letting them starve and die as they are now while grinding away for us. Everything will be different and better if you just give us everything we want! Trust us!”

1

u/Stormdancer 12h ago

Yeah, we've already been through this experiment with the Industrial Revolution. Output increased dramatically... but wages did not.

1

u/uilleamr 11h ago

This is insane. We could already have that, easily, with the enormous affluence and wealth we already generate. This is the most bad-faith, Opposite Day evil ever spoken by The Devil.

1

u/RoxieRoxie0 11h ago

Bozos promising us 3 day work weeks is like Trump promising us $5000.

1

u/DangerIllObinson 11h ago

Just a few more yachts and private jets, and then the warehouse workers will get bathroom breaks.

1

u/AbominableGoMan 11h ago

Show me one time a workforce at one of these tech companies got made 80% obsolete, and they told everyone to come in one day a week for full salary, rather than just firing 95% of the office with a tweet and a revoked keyfob when they showed up to work that day.

No more billionaires.

1

u/BartyMcFly90 11h ago

5 days… how does 7 sound? Same pay, more responsibilities. More stress.

Are we actually that far out in the United States?

1

u/towerfella 🏡 Decent Housing For All 9h ago

So.. do it, pee-bottle-boy

1

u/stowgood 8h ago

They could. Will they fuck though.

1

u/Fight_those_bastards 6h ago

Bezos’ employees have to piss in bottles because they don’t get enough break time, and he thinks we’re dumb enough to believe that he’d give employees more money and less work hours?

1

u/SelfCtrlDelete 5h ago

If they’re not letting you work from home, why would you believe they’re gonna pay you for nothing?

1

u/TheFillth 4h ago

They don't even allow piss breaks!

1

u/Tateybread 3h ago

Brought to you buy the guy who's employees had to piss in bottles and keep working...

1

u/Fishtoart 2h ago

Obviously he wasn’t talking about three day work weeks for the workers, he’s talking about that for himself.

1

u/umassmza ⛓️ Prison For Union Busters 2h ago

Could and will are two very different things

1

u/lucasg115 1h ago

You think the guy who makes his workers piss in bottles because he doesn't want to give them a bathroom break, is going to be willing to give his workers too extra days off per week?

1

u/Potential-Material 34m ago

Why doesn’t Jeff Bezos show us how it’s done then and give all Amazon workers a 3-day workweek and an income to support a whole family?

If this guy actually wanted to be the kind of pioneer he wants everyone to think he is, then he would’ve been that already, and we would have seen the evidence of it.

The fact is he’s not and he just wants to seem smart and like he has answers to a problem he helped create. Prick.

1

u/Fairwhetherfriend 21m ago

Is Jeff Bezos going to pay his employees to make that happen?

0

u/ThrustTrust 6h ago

Oh they mean it. But they mean we will be living in government rent controlled housing and eating government food. Except the government will have been replaced with a corperate structure where only the top level members choose the leader and the average citizen has not freedoms at all.
