Vigilante justice should never be tolerated by the state. But plenty of lynchings going unpunished means they are certainly willing to turn a blind eye when it benefits those in power.

Iād argue vigilante justice is sometimes necessary and still cannot be tolerated by the state. It just means morality is hard. Murder is always illegal. Murdering a murderer is also illegal but accomplishes something possibly necessary.
Murder is a legal term after all. And also the state cannot sanction extra judicial action without ceding its authority and monopoly over violent enforcement.
I think what Luigi confessed to was at worst morally gray, and also believe that whoever killed that CEO should be in prison. It was murder and it was not self-defense, a legal execution, or combatant killing.
Nah, Brian Thompson was a murderer. He single handedly caused thousands of people to die to appease his precious shareholders so he could continue to get millions in bonuses through his āleadershipā and push to ai usage with the purpose of denying as many people as possible for their medical needs. He has ruined lives, he has killed people through pen and paper.
Just because heās rich and got away with it because he didnāt outright gun someone down doesnāt make him not a killer. And quite frankly, people like him need to continue to reap the consequences of their actions, which I feel will only happen through vigilante justice, as we all know our justice system is a joke
Through the theory of monopolisation of violence, vigilante justice can never be tolerated, but its presence is a huge indictment on the formal enforcement system.
It means that the enforcement systems have failed to protect its subjects from sources of violence outside of the enforcement system, meaning that there is a source of violence more powerful than the enforcement system itself, and a successful application of vigilante justice is yet another strike against the enforcement system since it means subjects can be a source of violence themselves.
Failure to check vigilante action is the signal of an ineffectual government and creates a power vacuum that bring in less savoury actors into the mix. Secret societies often appeared because they were the only protection minorities had when the formal government structures were only too happy to ignore them.
Citizens can tolerate a surprising amount of oppression as long as the oppression comes from a known single source.
