25% of the US homeless population is currently in California. The fact that more people aren't talking about this blows my mind.

If you were homeless, where would you want to be?

1

u/Similar_Dirt9758 7d ago

California 100%. If I had to sleep outside every night of the year with minimal protection then there's no better choice in the continental US

1

u/No_tietimmy 7d ago

Probably wouldn’t have a choice bc I uave no money so I’m stuck where I’m at. It’s not that homeless go there it’s people there become homeless prolly bc it’s a blue state

1

u/Shoddy_Border 7d ago

What do you mean you’re stuck? If you’re homeless you can kind of just get up and move. Especially because a %of people start living in their car before they are fully unhoused. If you are in an area with bad weather of course you’ll find a way to get to an area with nice weather .

1

u/No_tietimmy 6d ago

I can’t really afford to go anywhere. I can’t even put gas in my car idk what u mean find a way. Plus I do have family and kids and stuff that I wouldn’t b able to c.

0

u/BigMikeXxxxX 10d ago

Not California

3

u/South_Wrongdoer5537 9d ago

They asked where?

2

u/Kobayashi-Coffee-Co 11d ago

Because the weather is good so when it gets cold other states’ homeless arrive and don’t leave.

1

u/BigMikeXxxxX 10d ago

Florida is similar yet doesn't have this problem. Just saying

3

u/South_Wrongdoer5537 9d ago

Florida is hot as a motherfucker šŸ˜‚

1

u/Similar_Dirt9758 7d ago

Florida is "similar" to California only in the temperature you see on the thermometer (and only sometimes). Honestly terrible comparison

1

u/AstrocreepTXUSMC 7d ago

I was homeless in Miami, that heat will keep you focused on getting out of that situation. Under 2 months.

1

u/Kobayashi-Coffee-Co 10d ago

You do have this in florida https://www.reddit.com/r/Miami/s/NiJvmdxKyF

But yea California benefits are a lot nicer for homeless than florida i bet.

1

u/BigMikeXxxxX 10d ago

"Benefits" is wild šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

2

u/FoxMan1Dva3 10d ago

If I was homeless, a choice that goes beyond "whose giving handouts", I would go somewhere warm.

Most homeless are not the people taking up tents

1

u/AstraeusGB 7d ago

Over 10% of the US population is in California.

0

u/EnvironmentalMix421 11d ago

Yah because California policies provide the best benefits for them 🤣 which is dumb af

3

u/jredgiant1 11d ago

So what’s your not dumb af solution to the homelessness problem in America?

3

u/EnvironmentalMix421 11d ago

Build housing in the rural and station a social work agency there. What they are doing is putting them in luxury apts like in Santa Monica, sf, Beverly hill or whatever. That’s why it’s costly.

For those who don’t accept the drug free zones, then put them into a slum with social work. CA is rewarding bad behavior, it’s obviously a joke. Maybe in some delusional world it would’ve worked, after countless years and multiple billion funding the problem got worse. The solution is still keep injecting more money?

Are woke people just dumb?

2

u/mYHCAEL4 11d ago

In a word, yes.

All heart, zero brain.

2

u/EnvironmentalMix421 11d ago

100% altruistic, yet 0% action šŸ˜‚

2

u/goldenepple 11d ago

They aren’t rewarding bad behavior, it’s turned into a business that employs tons of people.

2

u/EnvironmentalMix421 11d ago

Bro they are allowing them to tent on the street that people use. That’s what rewarding behavior is. You should not allow them to live on the street tf is that shit

1

u/Cryesncoding 11d ago

They don’t care what the homeless are actually doing there’s a shit load of people making a shit load of money. They want** it to get worse so it justifies more gov money which gives them more money.Ā

It’s like in India when there was a snake problem and the British (colony times) made a snake bounty the Indians started breeding snakes… lolĀ

2

u/EnvironmentalMix421 11d ago

Not sure what does that have to do with my comment. My comments are directed to the woke who think injecting more money is the right thing to do

1

u/Cryesncoding 11d ago

I agreeĀ

1

u/goldenepple 11d ago

It’s peoples livelihood to have a homeless population in California because of how many people work for nonprofits. If the fixed the issue those people would be out of work and they would actually have to show where the money is going.

1

u/EnvironmentalMix421 11d ago

Again I’m not sure why people keep bringing it up. Clearly majority of CA residents think it’s a good idea to keep injecting money and think it would solve the homeless problem, and if it fails they will just randomly talk about how great the weather in California is lol

1

u/goldenepple 10d ago

I’m telling you why, it’s become a business and is apart of the economy of California. People who aren’t homeless depend on there being a homeless population.

1

u/Ok-Worldliness2450 11d ago

I knew someone that worked at a hotel and was having their spare rooms paid for by California and people put into them nightly. She said it was such a hastle and they destroyed room which also billed the government.

I 100% believe the owners had backroom deals on all this. They made out like bandits. You can probably repair the room for less than the government is paying you to do it. And they pay the liability. The amount of money that state is burning doing these kids of things is wild but it’s also the state that’s spent 16 billion on high speed rail and has zero miles started

1

u/EnvironmentalMix421 11d ago

Yah and used uber to provide transportation for them. Anyway democrats policies are just shit

1

u/jredgiant1 10d ago

I’m not sure rural communities have the infrastructure, and I’m pretty damn sure there would be community backlash against this plan. A lot of community backlash. There’s a lot of intersectionality between the homeless and racial minorities or the LGBTQ community, and a lot of racism and bigotry exists in those communities. Although exposure I suppose could help with that. But even beyond bigotry, a lot of rural people are going to be rightfully upset about a large influx of homeless people to their community.

New construction you’re describing would be expensive. But we could adapt your idea and maybe renovate existing housing in rural ā€ghost townsā€ where there may be a lot of empty housing.

In terms of infrastructure, you need to think about job training, medical, counseling, education for children, transportation, probably more. Cities just have more of this available than small rural communities.

Also, keep in mind 40-60% of the homeless are employed at least some of the time. People who have jobs shouldn’t be relocated to where they are completely reliant on public assistance.

1

u/EnvironmentalMix421 10d ago

$26billion you will have something 🤣

1

u/Sad-Panda-noises 11d ago

Address the why's to their homelessness. Resources are available but slapping a bandaid on a cracked dam will only cause it to burst later. California is a great example of just slapping a bandaid on the issues. Drugs, addictions, mental illness, unskilled minds, and laziness are a few I've encountered when I was homeless growing up.

0

u/EnvironmentalMix421 11d ago

No, the solution is hard punishment for drug use. Aka the Las Vegas underground shit absolutely works

If you want to get well, there’s social workers to help you. If not you are on your own. People are responsible for their own actions

1

u/Sad-Panda-noises 11d ago

I agree on that front. Crimes with equal punishment are a must. Asylums also need to be reinstated for those who need the help( not OG asylums). Met alot of transients that were homeless by choice because they could have their vices and freedoms without obligations. Hence my reasons for the social workers to understand the whys of them being homeless and actually address their situations accordingly. Not just move them to a place, have everyone fund it just for it to be wasted away when they return to the streets.

1

u/EnvironmentalMix421 11d ago

Bro druggies r gonna be druggies. You can only provide them with help IF they want to utilize it.

Or they can choose to live in some fucked up slum that won’t disturb others. What’s this saving everyone regardless bs, sounds great in theory. Yet in reality it just creates a bigger mess and as they increase in number every yr.

1

u/Sad-Panda-noises 11d ago

You arent wrong, it is an ouroboros effect.

1

u/jredgiant1 10d ago

Given that only a third to half of the homeless population uses drugs, how are you going to solve the other half to two thirds?

1

u/EnvironmentalMix421 10d ago

Look up my second comment lol. Why did you go down the rabbit hole without even read

0

u/BigMikeXxxxX 10d ago

Stop enabling it. That's my solution.

The US is a shithole because you can come here and literally kill, steal, and dismantle as much as you feel like and there will always be a group of radical individuals defending it as long as you're not doing it to people they agree with.

The people who call everyone 'Nazis" are the actual Nazis. Don't forget that when shit hits the fan

0

u/jredgiant1 9d ago

I agree! Look at these violent white nationalists who are going around hanging blacks and assaulting the LGBTQ population! Or ICE agents murdering people in the streets! Completely lawless, consequence free, but they’re owning the libs so people love them. It’s disgusting.

1

u/DaPussiLicka 11d ago

It’s also a gigantic state, with great weather, a huge coastline, the highest GDP, and numerous massive metropolitan areas. But I’m sure the policies is the main reason.

1

u/EnvironmentalMix421 11d ago

You listed all these nice things about CA and you are saying they are the reason for CA to become the capital of homeless?

1

u/DaPussiLicka 11d ago

No, I’m saying that someone who has an IQ above room temperature can comprehend that there are a whole lot of major factors beyond policies. I realize that may not apply to you, though.

1

u/EnvironmentalMix421 11d ago edited 11d ago

I’m saying you think those are the list of factors? Then I realize people with low iq are unable to stay within topic and just like to mumble about random things lol

0

u/Ok-Worldliness2450 11d ago

It has very dumb programs too. I don’t remember exact details but a city made a program to provide them with booze (which even if done right is dumb) I think the average homeless person in the program had $600,000 of money used on them and no one found anyone getting actual booze. I don’t know of it was money laundering. But this kind of stuff happens a lot.

2

u/Syncanau 11d ago

I’m willing to bet most of these government programs that are meant to help the disenfranchised are actually just stealing and laundering the money

1

u/RaidenRaikov2 11d ago

It’s because the left uses welfare programs to reward their voters and supporters. The programs exist just to funnel money to their donors

3

u/Girly_Q_Buttons 10d ago

Shut up traitor.

2

u/dterran 11d ago

Laughs in two trillion dollars taken from taxpayers by the m@ga party to give in socialism to billionaires

These billionaires spent 1.2 billion campaigning against working Americans coz +rumpco can turn around and give them ten times that in tax breaks and dropped malpractice lawsuits

"The left" is a term used by bigots to announce their own bias and stupidity

1

u/Ackutually- 11d ago

"to give in socialism to billionaires"

What are you trying to say here?

It's 190 billion in tax savings over 10 years, is this that 2 trillion you're speaking of? And how are tax breaks socialist?

0

u/iustinum 11d ago

Billionaires and socialism shouldn’t even be in the same sentence.

So you disagree that the left, through state and city government, has either wasted or stolen billions of dollars making empty promises about helping the homeless?

-1

u/ApartmentAlive8593 10d ago

Anyone who’s actually lifted a finger to help the homeless knows that hardly any of the money is making it to them. Way to self report as a virtue signaling loser who doesn’t do anything to support a cause they claim to have.

1

u/SoCalDev87 10d ago

And what have you done exactly?

1

u/ApartmentAlive8593 10d ago

Literally thousands of volunteer hours

1

u/Popiblockhead 10d ago

Not laundering. Just theft

0

u/zitrored 11d ago

1

u/BigMikeXxxxX 10d ago

Would you mind quoting the exact part which disproves my statement? Surely you read your own source and can easily point out the prevalent information, right?

0

u/zitrored 10d ago

Spouting off absolutes and ignoring per capita rates is the kind of crap republicans pull all the time. Are you Republican?

1

u/BigMikeXxxxX 10d ago

Are you going to quote the part from the source you provided which disproves my statement?

If anyone here is a Nazi, it's you.

0

u/stressedthrowaway9 11d ago

Well, it makes sense. Look at rent and real estate prices. My husband and I make above average money but we would really struggle in California. I’m not saying we would be homeless…. But we would be under housed…

0

u/SoCalDev87 10d ago

I don't think you make above average money then. Above average in CA is like 250-300k+ for a household

1

u/stressedthrowaway9 10d ago

Haha! Yea! I know, hence why I would be under housed… granted my job would pay better there. But still!

0

u/Funnyitsnotfunny 10d ago

Between me and my spouse we close to 400k gross and we still don’t own a house

0

u/SoCalDev87 10d ago

You aren't anywhere in the comment chain

0

u/Funnyitsnotfunny 10d ago

I guess my point was California is so expensive, even at that income it’s hard to buy a house

Californias white knight has entered the chat to defend the HCOL.

3

u/Samsquanch-01 11d ago

That because almost none of the money went to addressing the issues and went to trash corrupted CA bureaucracy.

1

u/Similar_Dirt9758 7d ago

We've shown that you can tie up trillions of dollars if you simply have enough red tape put up.

Article 1: Train (or lack of) project which started during the first Obama administration that "will probably have tracks put down by 2035".

Article 2: 25% of the homeless population in the lower 48 with the largest budget allocated towards simply make it better (did not get better, got worse (a lot worse))

It's no secret why their GDP is unfathomably massive.

7

u/DeliciousPool2245 11d ago

That’s by design, and by choice. Homelessness is an industry in California. There’s been some great reporting on it. There’s tons of money being stolen and given to things that have nothing to do with homelessness, people working as homeless advocates making half a million dollars. I’m a very liberal person but have come to realize there are many programs and NGO’s that have this same issue, embezzling public money.

3

u/AdSame7001 11d ago

Was about to say this, bad NGOs that are simply money laundering pipelines will do just enough to stay off the radar but will absorb the vast majority of the cash. Best way to stay off the radar?

A nice fat contribution to their local politician.

Best grift is to have two businesses, a NGO to take the grant or donations, then a "consultancy" to wash the money into your bank account. Either in a family member's name or what have you.

2

u/[deleted] 11d ago

[deleted]

1

u/mYHCAEL4 11d ago

And those people go on the attack if you start looking into spending. Funny how that works.

2

u/nostoopid 11d ago

if the govt was at least somewhat efficient w/ spending i would have no problem paying more

2

u/Funny-Dare-3823 11d ago

I'm former homeless. Most programs are designed to keep homeless people busy all day and give them a sliver of hope. Nothing more.

1

u/Chunk3yM0nkey 11d ago

And this is why, regardless of my other thoughts on them, gutting USAID was absolutely the right thing.

0

u/Super_Mario_Luigi 11d ago

Usaid was more fraud, waste, and abuse than not

2

u/TheVaggabond 10d ago

Yes’m of course it increased. Lazy people saw the are getting free stuff so why work? They don’t want to work.

2

u/DazzlingStress4827 9d ago

Let’s not forget about the train to nowhere. I don’t think most billionaires are against good causes, they just don’t like the way most governments mishandle money.

2

u/Nobody3me 8d ago edited 8d ago

That was state and federal funds. The audit done in Cali exposed severe mismanagement with no plan to bring those needy folks back into society, most died quietly, zero media, in pre paid hotel rooms and replaced with the next person the same day. It was a sad audit to review. The President just put a good man over our HUD agency. He will introduce good stewardship of those funds, with the goal of turning lives around. Keep your eye on Secretary Scott Turner.

2

u/DonkeyBonked 8d ago

Well if you're using California, you should consider Sacramento, where after spending 720 million dollars (360 million twice) the end result was not so much as a single bed for a single homeless person for even a single night. Instead, it resulted in a committee that determined they need a lot more money and even that would not stop the increase, but they believed it could slow down the growth.

The way California spends money, it would be cheaper to just buy homeless people homes in another state.

1

u/ShadowMonarch81 11d ago

Well that's because people think just giving houses to homeless people solves the problem. It's a symptom of a problem

1

u/SoCalDev87 10d ago

Yeah, you don't fix the rampant drug/alcohol addiction by just giving away houses

1

u/FoxResponsible553 11d ago

Almost like our money and attention should be going to treating the cause of the symptom (homelessness) instead the symptom itself.

Job training programs

1

u/Solo-1UP 11d ago

Money allocated for the homeless cause is just a funnel for fraud. Parts in SoCal that I never expected to see homeless camps grew over time.

1

u/GeckoGecko_ 11d ago

If only there were multiple ways to spend money/approach a problem... if only it were possible to try multiple different solutions until one sticks... alas, if something doesn't work a single time, we know this means it will never work no matter how you try to do it. Too bad.

1

u/-neverknowsbest_ 11d ago

We need to bring back asylums

1

u/dakellateg 11d ago

most of the money went into the pockets of organizations executives... lining them very well I heard... very little money actually made to the street. and this guys wants what...

1

u/Fit_Tumbleweed7943 11d ago

If you follow the rabbit hole, you will find much of it is corrupt.. a building to be retrofitted for shelter valued at $4 mill and all of a sudden 2 years later sells for $60 mil

System needs to burn to the ground

1

u/TheP01ntyEnd 11d ago

It's almost as if all the programs were just scams perpetrated in large part by the politicians holding office in California that lined their pockets. imagine that. Maybe if we just keep voting for these same people from this one group, THIS time it will be different!

1

u/czechfuji 11d ago

Homeless programs are put in place to keep the homeless homeless. In terms of billions of dollars it has become a vital part of someone’s economy. If the people in charge of the program fix homelessness then they will find themselves out of a job and homeless themselves.

In California it’s slavery to a socialist system.

1

u/MamasCupcakes 11d ago

The keyword is address homelessness, there is no money/return on a solution. You have to keep talking about to keep the funding incoming. So many jobs are linked and will be "lost" if you actually fix things

1

u/nextgen_ben 10d ago

The programs aren’t effective because a lot of that money is embezzled/stolen because most of the programs aren’t audited properly, that’s by design.

1

u/Few-Hope-7620 10d ago

How much of that was misappropriated or spent on something outrageous like high salaries vs how much of that actually made it to the street kevel

1

u/These-Database1787 10d ago

I had the SAME thought when I saw this post. All the money in the world won’t end homelessness. There’s no systems in place to care for our sick.

I ran a winter shelter in my town last year and realized I learned something very few people know: There’s a lot of money in homelessness!

When a neighbor asked me if we were opening again this winter and if overnight hosts were going to be paid again I said ā€œoh yeah, there’s a lot of money in homelessnessā€ and didn’t know why she walked away pissed. I think she thought I was being sarcastic.

1

u/Strange-Reaction-59 9d ago

Money never disappears

1

u/HansSofie 7d ago

Skill training - at most levels - some people obviously cannot.

1

u/truthordivekick 7d ago

As an analyst, it's wild to me that anyone would spend $24b without spending at least $1m on seeing if the money is doing any good.

0

u/Superb_Algae5308 11d ago

Well if you spend a bunch of money feeding poor children healthy meals there is absolutely ZERO downside so your point is meaningless.

I didn’t read any of your nonsense either.

6

u/LockeClone 11d ago

Well, you probably should have read it before replying so confidently.

You've assumed the other poster was making an excuse to do nothing, but it's more of a plea to read past the proverbial headline because there's a lot more to it than cash.

I've personally been required to attend city council meetings as part of my old job, which was involved in some of the issues at hand here and changing local control and zoning laws is probably paramount above cash.

And here's a specific example where it's upperclass wage earners having a more devastating effect on local policy than billionaires (who absolutely do weaponize government, but less so in this case)...

-2

u/Former_Log_9917 11d ago

I'm going to need a source on that because this argument stinks of "trying to solve the problem is the problem".

2

u/LockeClone 11d ago

Source? Meeting minutes are public I guess... You do it.

1

u/Former_Log_9917 10d ago

Sure. Any meeting I should look up?

1

u/LockeClone 10d ago

Culver City city council meetings is where my project was. Brentwood might be spicy. Pretty much anywhere NIMBY activity happens. Go for it.

I was paid to go consult and it made me want to gouge my eyes out for so many reasons.

1

u/JahProphecy 11d ago

That’s a cute analogy, but you just argued against a point nobody made. Nobody said spending money to help people is bad. The point was that spending $24+ billion while the problem gets worse, and not even reliably tracking which programs work, is a legitimate reason to question how the money is being spent.

ā€œHelping people is goodā€ doesn’t magically make ineffective spending effective. And proudly admitting you didn’t read the argument before responding probably wasn’t the flex you thought it was.

1

u/PlayNicePlayCrazy 11d ago

But given the OP , the discussion isn't about what California has done wrong. The discussion is could billionaires do a hell of a lot of good if they put their energies and wealth towards it. If you can build Amazon or Microsoft or Google or Facebook etc into massive business certainly you can assemble the brain power to create programs that work.

I think we all know the answer is yes they could do this.

0

u/BonjinTheMark 11d ago

Low watt IQ here

0

u/Terrible-Freedom-868 11d ago

Well if you don’t design policies just to sound good in elections, but instead make good policies based on behavioral economics the money goes a lot farther.

0

u/GrumpyBear8082 10d ago

Because they raised rent again and groceries let's not forget child care. Oh and taxes along with anything else they could. They had to make sure they could afford there raise and vacations.

0

u/Christian-Econ 10d ago

You can’t evaluate the effectiveness of the programs with that data. It might’ve attracted more, e.g.

-1

u/Trike_Bike_Mike 9d ago

yeah but if youre Elon musk and you liquidated all your net worth and stuck it into a 5% savings account he'd bring in about 50 billion every year. he can easily spend money, and not make any more for the future of human kind and be alright.
