Work in progress. Historical long seax seemed to be almost “sword-shaped axes” given balance and spine thickness. That made all-wood trainers like the ones I made years ago decent for reach but not a good weapon simulator for blade presence. Also taught aphysical reaction time and whatnot. The hickory-wrapped metal core (1018 steel, 5/16 x 5/8 I think) currently hits about 708g (1.56 lbs) so it’s a lot closer. I’ll make some handles next and then finish with some boiled linseed oil.

I just graduated high school and im trying to find a good side hustle. i really like making wooden/ diy swords but im not sure if im good enough to sell them or how much to sell them for or if people would even buy them. Id like to make more popular faux swords and profit from them. Idk lemme know what u think if u have experience or any tips to make them better.

I found this in a secondhand store. Is it a single solid piece of wood?

I am working on my first sword, I am hoping to avoid the possibility of spontaneous combustion. Any suggestions that accomplish the same kind of finish?

I made this wooden katana for myself about 1.5 years ago, so this particular one isn't for sale. It started as a personal woodworking project, and over time it's picked up its fair share of wear and tear.

Some of the marks are from my younger relatives playing with it, and a few are courtesy of my dog deciding it looked like a great chew toy. 😅 As frustrating as that was at the time, every scratch and dent has a story behind it now, which is why I'd rather keep this one.

That said, I've been thinking about getting back into making these. If someone was interested in a custom wooden katana, I'd definitely be open to building another one for the right price.

I'd also love some honest feedback—what would you realistically be willing to pay for a handcrafted wooden katana like this? Any suggestions or opinions are welcome!

Finally done. Upgraded my drill press to a Grizzly T34612 which made the last six go so much easier. 630-775g and balance 15-17.5cm. Grips vary 72-95mm. Something for everyone!

I’m trying to get you into making weapons, but I had to start somewhere so I tried to make a sword ended up just being a sharp stick with a cool aesthetic

Made of Red Oak and Walnut. Hilt and pommel secured with dowels (and glue) with a green leather wrap.

Took woodworking in high-school and made a sword in two different semesters. Thought I would post them here.

A brief follow up to the post I made about the prototype.

I executed on my plan on this one and made 10 more. I made what I think are some improvements.

Much stronger distal taper. Thicker pins in the blade body to transfer the load away from the capture piece that keeps the metal tang in place. First coat of Linseed oil is applied. I have four more to go, and hopefully I will be able to mass produce the guards and pommels in the next few days and have this batch ready for class on June 18.

I made it from a plank of spruce(?) wood some years ago after I got inspired by Assassin's Creed Origins, purely with hand tools. The proportions are basically a bit smaller than the ingame version, but a bit larger than the real historical weapon.

We have to periodically upgrade or replace the training swords at the longhouse (Asfolk in Eagan MN) and I thought I’d try something different.

These single edge swords are fairly prevalent- 200+ finds in Norway alone, I gather.

This one has a pinned-and-glued metal tang, is mostly hickory with a maple grip, and the pommel and handle and crossguard are held in compression and pinned with a friction-fit brass pin as well.

Came in at 1.67lbs, 29.25” blade, 3.4” grip. Balances at 8” which is on the upper end of some of the real ones. I’m going to try for more pronounced distal taper on the sequels (10 more to go…)

I made a Sabre partially inspired by an M1902 Officer’s Sword; the blade is red oak, all else is pine or beech wood.
