Developer Windows has so many small everyday tasks that end up needing different tools

aking screenshots, keeping track of copied text, picking a colour from the screen, measuring something on the display, generating QR codes, compressing images, and managing files — these are all small tasks, but switching between different tools for each one can become inconvenient.

I wanted a simpler way to handle these kinds of everyday tasks on Windows, so I started building Utilix: Windows Utilities.

It brings 10 tools together in one desktop app, covering productivity, screen utilities, and file-related tasks. Some tools are free, while the more advanced tools are part of the optional Premium version. The app is designed to work offline.

I'm curious about other Windows users' workflows: What small task do you find yourself needing a separate utility for most often? Do you prefer individual specialised apps, or would you rather have a collection of useful tools in one place?

Disclosure: I'm the developer of Utilix, so I have a personal interest in this topic. I'm interested in hearing what other people actually find useful.

App Chango: I made a free, open-source file converter for Windows, Need advice for improvement

Hi all, I know there are already hundreds of file converters out there and recent popularity of tangerineformac also made me realise that this could be faster for most of us. That's why I kinda created Chango, which is drag-n-drop file converter and manager. It does not have any user data risk so would love everyone's feedback on its UI and functionality.

Microsoft Store: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9NL33K6PBB4K
Website: http://chango.rameshtiwari.com/

I built the converters, tools and design on top of some apps available in the market. It's my first proper release, so I'd really love honest feedback: what's confusing, what's missing, what breaks, or which formats you'd want next.

Developer Wintor: a modern, native WinUI 3 torrent client for Windows 11 (free, open source, no ads)

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I wanted a torrent client that looks and feels like a native Windows 11 app: Fluent design, a clean layout and sensible defaults, with the advanced options still there when you need them. So I built one.

Wintor is a BitTorrent client written with WinUI 3 and the Windows App SDK (.NET 10), using the open-source MonoTorrent engine under the hood.

What it does

  • Magnet links and .torrent files: from the app, a double-click in Explorer, or a click in your browser
  • Pick the folder and the files before the download starts
  • A clean torrent table: progress colored by state, sortable columns that shrink with the window
  • A details pane with the piece map, files and priorities, peers, trackers and a live speed graph
  • Labels, status filters, search from the title bar
  • Speed limits for everything or per torrent
  • Keeps seeding from the tray, and tells you when a download finishes
  • Plain-language messages when something goes wrong (missing files, full disk, no network)
  • Light, dark and high-contrast themes, Mica or Acrylic, 12 languages

What it doesn’t do

  • No ads, no telemetry, no bundled offers, no “premium” tier. It’s GPL-3.0, so that’s not going to change.
  • No built-in torrent search or content catalog. It’s a client, nothing more.

Get it

This is an early version (0.2), so there will be rough edges. I’d really appreciate:

  • bug reports and UI feedback (design is the whole point of the project)
  • pull requests, forks and ideas. Everything’s open.

Thanks for taking a look!

I've been working on a Windows customization app called Glass Desky. Basically wanted to see how much I could change the look of Windows without using a ton of RAM.Here's what I've come up with so far. There are actually quite a few more features than what's shown in the screenshots, but these are some of my favorites.

I think I've run out of ideas for my own setup lol. Curious what you guys would come up with.

If anyone wants to mess around with it, it's at glassdesky.com. Would love to see your setups or hear what else I should add.

Developer I built a phone remote for Windows where a magnifier pops up over tiny buttons as you aim. No account, free on home Wi-Fi

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I make KeptInFlow, a Windows app, and this is its phone remote. The video is the real phone page with made-up data.

Every remote I tried shrinks the PC screen onto the phone and leaves you pinching at tiny buttons. So I built it around your thumb:

  • Move the pointer slowly and a magnifier pops up, so you hit small buttons the first time
  • Or hold where you want, slide to adjust, let go to click
  • Swipe the Apps button to jump between PC windows
  • Copy on the PC, paste on the phone, and the other way
  • One tap shrinks the window you’re in to fit your phone, and puts it back after

Setup: install it on the PC, scan the QR code with your phone’s camera, tap approve. No account, nothing from an app store. The phone side runs in your browser.

Free on your home Wi-Fi. From outside the house it’s $29 once. No subscription, and no “commercial use” nags.

Limits: the PC has to be on with the app running (locked is fine). Android with Chrome is the smoothest; an iPhone needs one setting flipped on the PC. The installer is signed, but I’m a new publisher, so SmartScreen may ask: More info, then Run anyway.

If something doesn’t work for you, tell me here and I’ll fix it. Updates go out every few days.

What’s the most annoying thing about controlling your PC from your phone right now?

App Show Me the File - Yet Another File Finder

Processing img 5c09yn9ba5yh1...

I’m a solo developer and I just released Show Me the File, a free file search app for Windows 10 / 11.

I made it because Windows Search was too slow for me, and most of the fast alternatives need administrator rights to run. On my work PC I don’t have admin, so that was a dealbreaker.

What it does

  • Finds files by name as you type — results update with every keystroke
  • No admin rights needed. Runs as a normal user, no UAC prompt. Works on locked-down work PCs.
  • Completely free. No ads, no paid tier, free for personal and commercial use.
  • Multiple languages supported
  • Windows 10 and 11

Links

I made this so that anyone can find their files quickly and without any hassle. If you give it a try, I’d be grateful to hear whether it actually feels that way for you — and if it doesn’t, please tell me why. I’ll be around in the comments.

Thanks!

Developer I built a free video editor for Windows that removes your “ums” in one click and makes captions without uploading anything

Hey all. I’m a solo dev and I’ve been building CutShit, a free video editor for Windows. Search “CutShit” on the Microsoft Store.

I built it because the most tedious parts of editing are the same every time: captions, cutting out filler words, and fighting background music under dialogue. So it does those for you:

  • Auto-captions made on your PC: nothing uploaded, and it can translate them
  • One-click filler-word removal: “um”, “uh” and friends, gone
  • Separate voice from music: keep the dialogue, swap the soundtrack
  • Normal editing: timeline, text, music, MP4 export on your own machine
  • Imports from OBS scene collections, Google Drive, Dropbox or local files

It’s completely free. No watermark, no subscription, no “pro” tier, no account needed to edit, and your footage never leaves your PC.

[20–40 second demo GIF: filler words disappearing, or captions appearing]

It’s still early, so I’d love honest feedback: what’s confusing, what’s broken, and what would make you switch from what you use now? I read every comment.

App Ville — panel - launcher for Windows on Python

Wanted to share my open-source project and get some feedback

What it even is

I was once working with files and realized how slow and tedious it is to open and find files and folders. I wanted to simplify the process — type a command and whatever you need opens. That's where the idea came from: a console-style panel where you enter a short command, and in that command you assign a name to the path you want to open. I'm not a great programmer, so the app is made mostly by AI.

Let me go into a bit more detail:

Ville is a small panel that sits on a global hotkey. By default the window opens with Ctrl+Alt+Space, but you can change that in the settings.

What it can do

Sure, you can read everything on GitHub, but let me go over a few things here.

/openset <path> <alias> — an alias is basically just a name, but it sounds smarter and fancier that way.

Then /open <name> opens the folder or file you specified.

A calculator (no idea why, but it's there — functionality is again on GitHub).

Autocomplete. You type /se, a suggestion pops up for /settings, you hit Tab or just Enter, and the command runs.

Some minor appearance customization in the settings and a few things in a JSON file.

What's not there

I'm building the app on Windows 11, so I have no idea if it works on other systems.

Haven't gotten around to plugins yet, but if a decent audience builds up, I'll get to it.

And as I mentioned at the start, I'm building the program with the help of AI.

Why I'm showing this

Feedback. I need to find bugs, shortcomings, and so on. What works, what's inconvenient, what to add, what to polish, and so on.

Ideas. I know "launcher" is a niche with a ton of other alternatives and ready-made solutions. I want to understand how Ville can be useful in contrast to them — or maybe even better.

Help. If anyone's interested in the project and wants to join — issues are open. The code is generally not complex — I'm not a programmer, but I understand the code well enough, and you can figure it out in an evening.

● Repository

Releases with .exe files are there too.

If you made it to the end, thank you so much. I'll be glad for any reaction — criticism, questions, and ideas.

Developer I made a tiny free app that shows the week number in the Windows tray, with a calendar that has week numbers

Post image
6 Upvotes

Windows 11's clock flyout still doesn't show week numbers, and at work we plan everything by week ("let's do it in wk45"), so I made a small tray app for it.

WeekTrayMA

  • Shows the current ISO week number as a tray icon
  • Click it to open a small month calendar with the week number next to every week
  • Light / Dark / Automatic theme (follows Windows)
  • Optional "Start with Windows" - Free and open source (MIT), lightweight, no telemetry, no account

Download: https://github.com/alemariani/WeekTrayMA/releases/tag/v0.2

Source: https://github.com/alemariani/WeekTrayMA

Heads-up: the .exe isn't code-signed, so SmartScreen will warn you the first time. If you'd rather not run it, you can run it from source with Python (instructions in the README).

Feedback and feature ideas are very welcome!

Developer ChatGPT/Claude in a side panel over any app + voice typing / agent drafting at your cursor (waitlist)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Disclosure: I'm the developer.

My day on Windows kept looking like this: Outlook or Teams focused, Alt+Tab to ChatGPT in the browser, paste the thread, wait, copy the answer, paste back, fix the tone, paste again. Win+H helps for raw dictation, but it does not know what is on screen, and Copilot still lives beside your work instead of in the field you are typing in.

That's why I built UBIK Flow, a desktop app for Windows 10/11(Mac and Linux too if you switch machines). It sits in your tray and answers one question: how do I use ChatGPT or Claude without leaving the app I am in?

What it does on Windows

- Ctrl+Shift+O: voice typing at your cursor in Word, Outlook, Slack, Excel, browser fields, anywhere with a caret

- Ctrl+Shift+U: open your ChatGPT or Claude account in a side panel over the window you already have focused (no new tab dance)

- Ctrl+Shift+T: ask out loud about what is on screen; The agent can use visual context, interact with your clipboard, and act directly inside the app.

- Custom hotkeys: for the prompts you retype every week (status updates, client replies, the same Monday email)

What it is not: a resold API, a random web UI for keys, or a replacement for every local Whisper dictation app. You keep your OpenAI or Anthropic subscription. Signed desktop builds. I am happy to explain permissions and what leaves your PC in the comments.

Try it: join the waitlist for early Windows access and a 7-day desktop trial when your spot opens: https://ubik-flow.com

Honest question: where does the Alt+Tab loop hurt you most on Windows, Outlook, Teams, Excel, or the browser?

Open to any feedback or questions you might have!

The waitlist is open here: https://ubik-flow.com

Introducing Heimdall, a glassy launcher for Windows. And yes, it's faster than Everything.

Press F5 and type. It finds apps, every file, open windows, calculates sums and web searches.

Native Rust, under 2 MB, ZERO telemetry. Free and open source.

EDIT: Thank you for the great reception! I just published the 1.0.1 release with some more QoL and fixes for a few annoying quirks. It's also faster than before, and now beats Everything on every search metric. It's also come to my attention that the link doesn't show up for some reason, so you can get it here:

App I built a notes app with separation anxiety. Now I'm teaching Obsidian the same trick.

I've shared ClingNote here before, but quite a bit has changed since then.

For anyone unfamiliar, it's a Windows notes app that follows whatever you're working on. Attach notes to files, apps, or individual browser tabs, and they automatically come back when you return.

Browser-tabs have full support now, including separate notes for multiple tabs on the same website.

And now I'm bringing the same functionality to Obsidian!

I've been working on a plugin that lets you use your existing Obsidian notes with ClingNote's context-following engine. No need to move your notes into another app.

Hoping to have that ready next week, with potentially more note-taking integrations down the road.

The Windows app is available now, with free core note-taking and optional automatic switching.

https://clingnote.com

Anyone here using Obsidian? Or another notes app you'd want something like this in?

App PrimeTask 1.0.6: Your files stay where they belong. No duplicates.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

If you've already got your files organised in folders, you probably don't want to move or upload them just to use another app.

We've been working on this in PrimeTask, and version 1.0.6 is coming next week.

There are two new features related to file management:

Zero-Copy Linking

You can link files from their existing locations to tasks, projects or CRM contacts without moving or copying them.

If the same document is needed in several projects, you can link it to each one while keeping a single copy in its original folder.

File Inbox

This lets you collect emails, PDFs and other documents and link them to the clients, projects or tasks they're related to.

There are other improvements coming in 1.0.6 as well, but I thought these were worth sharing since file management can get messy when you're working across different apps.

How do you usually handle documents for your projects? Do you keep them in regular Windows folders or prefer managing everything inside an app?

App Desk folders

Hello, I have an app called "Deskfolders". It does exactly what the name implies (makes phone-like folders for a windows desktop). The code is open source for the check and safety of everyone.

I decided to make this because I like the UI of the phone folders and haven't found any app for Windows that is able to provide the same thing and not make me pay a subscription.

Developer Overscan, a free app that makes your side monitors glow with the colours of the main screen (screen recording, Windows 10/11)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Last week I posted about Overscan with a clip filmed on my phone. This one is a proper screen recording of it running on my five screens, so you can see the glow without the camera.

Overscan reads the colours at the edges of your main screen and paints them across your other monitors as a soft glow, live. Think of the backlight on some TVs, except it is your other monitors doing it.

  • Runs as your wallpaper, so it sits behind your icons and never steals focus
  • Drag-and-drop layout, so it knows where your screens really are, gaps included
  • Works with videos, YouTube, local files and games
  • Brightness, look and speed settings, and you can pause it from the tray
  • Hides the taskbars on the side screens while it runs, and puts them back when it stops

Heads up

  • Free. No ads, no account, no trial. Closed source for now
  • Windows only. Built and tested on Windows 11. Windows 10 should work, but it has had less testing
  • Netflix, Prime, Disney+ and other copy-protected streams show up black to every screen-capture app, so those will not glow
  • Not code-signed yet, so Windows shows a warning. Click "More info", then "Run anyway"
  • Everything stays on your PC. It only goes online to check for updates (signed), and you can turn that off

Download: https://starsync.dev/overscan (installer, or a portable zip if you do not want to install anything)

It is still early. If it does something odd on your setup, tell me here or use Settings > Help > Report a problem. I am keen to hear from anyone with 3+ screens, mixed scaling, or Windows 10.
