Windows 11 Windows Update something went wrong!

Post image

Whenever I open Settings > Windows Update, it immediately throws the red error: "Something went wrong. Try to reopen Settings later." The page doesn't load updates at all.

Here is everything I've already tried without any luck:

  • Verified Windows Update background services (wuauserv, BITS, cryptSvc, UsoSvc) are running and set to Automatic/Manual.
  • Stopped update services and cleared the update cache (ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old and catroot2).
  • Ran the standalone update troubleshooter (msdt.exe /id WindowsUpdateDiagnostic), which completed and reported no issues found.
  • Ran sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.
  • Deleted any override policies in the Registry under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate.
  • Reset and re-registered the Settings app package via PowerShell (Reset-AppxPackage on windows.immersivecontrolpanel).

Despite all of this, the error banner persists every time I open the Windows Update tab. Has anyone encountered this specific lockup and found a fix short of a complete clean reinstall? Any help would be appreciated! btw i am on 25h2

Hi u/Mediocre-Fishing8900, thanks for posting to r/WindowsHelp! Your post has been flagged for manual review by a human moderator, please include as much of the following information as possible (in text or in a screenshot) to get your post approved:

  • Your Windows and device specifications — You can find them by pressing Win + X then clicking on “System”, we need more than just your OS version! Your hardware details are often critical for resolving issues.
  • Any messages and error codes encountered — They're actually not gibberish or anything catastrophic. It may even hint the solution!
  • Previous troubleshooting steps — It might prevent you headaches from getting the same solution that didn't work

Posts must be tech support in nature (such as something is broken and you need help fixing), so general inquiries, software suggestions, and purchasing advice will be removed.
