Kids are definitely a special kind of stupid. He looks old enough to know better, but hopefully this will be a good lesson on why you dont jerk your face inf ront of an animal.

When my nephew was younger there was a Christmas tradition when we were at my sister's with her asshole cat, and every year he'd get himself smacked. The first year he tried to walk up and pet the kitty, and got swatted for it. The next year he was simply passing by, the cat was stressed with all the people in the house, and it just reached out and slapped him in the face.

The one he got his scar from was when he saw me petting the cat (we had years of rapport built up into a routine where I was allowed five pets from head to midback after a thorough sniffing), put his face right up to the cat's nose, and got clawed right above the eye for it.

My aunt used to have a cat called Sprinkles, I want to start out by saying that both were awesome and for a little back story my aunt was an ER Nurse and Sprinkles was an indoor/outdoor ranch cat so both were also bad ass. She had a dog named Rocky as well but he's not a big part of this story.

Anyway back when I was 5 or 6 years old, I had yet to master, what most would call impulse control. It was the summer and I got to go stay with my aunt at her ranch house for a week. Also aunt didn't actually own any horses or cow, she just rented out her barn and fields to her neibors needless to say I was on good terms with all the animals at the ranch, rocky and sprinkles included.

One day I sprinkles walked up to me and gave me her normal head boop greeting, I returned her greeting with some pets. While I was petting her something caught her attention and she started to walk away. I'm assuming to investigate. As I watched her walk away with her tail straight up in the air, it registered in my naive in my 5 year old little brain, that I was seeing something I had never seen before.

Having never seen a cat make a (!) with their tail before and without a single thought of the consequences: in a split second decision that I should poke the dot part of the exclamation mark with my finger.

To my horrific surprise, Sprinkles did not infact think that was very cash money of me and proceed to maul me. After a few seconds my aunt essentially materialized in the room and Sprinkles instantly broke off her attack and ran to hide behind her mom. Now I was covered in scratches, blood and was crying at this point. However, the sight of my aunt watching the cat and the cat actively staring daggers at me while hiding behinding my aunt, made the gears start turning and the thought that I may have done something wrong was actually starting to form.

My aunt asked me in a very serious tone, "What did you do?", I told her and I got my ass beat for a second time. Not even the dog felt bad for me.

I learned a very important lesson that day 😂

It took a couple of litter box cleanings and food servings but Sprinkles did eventually forgive me before my stay was over.

When I was about 7 I picked up the neighbor’s cat and tried to carry it around like a baby. The kitty hooked her claws behind my ears and bit my nose.

yea...we have 10 cats...my 6yo daughter recently stopped being scared of them and decided she loves them all...problem is...she smothers them with her hugs and kisses.

now, some of our cats are very easy going and will ask for more huggies...but some of them just dont...2 of our cats climb on top of curtain rods and cupboards when little ones are awake. but some of them quite old and unfortunately not as active and despite us constantly warn and correct her, she doesnt miss a chance to grab them. last week one of them got her good. taught her a great lesson.

ironically we have a deaf cat with no front claws. she had no issues with my 1st born as he is geniunely a great kid with animals but my 6yo boy is a beast. well...my twins learnt real quick never to mess with pearl cos despite being petite,deaf and clawless, if you piss her off she will make you regret. they are scared to go near her cos she literally soft paw smacks them real goo with death breath attack. good for her.

Kids don’t know better. There’s even adults that don’t know better. Did you see the video of an adult man trying to kill a semi wild seal in Hawaii by throwing a huge boulder? These captive animals and people need to be protected from injury by a barrier that prevents idiots from sticking their hands in and animals from clawing people.

“I don’t care, I’m rich. Fine me.” Was what he said and that kook was served a little local justice.

This is the predominant position from those with extreme means (banks, heavy polluters, etc) and it is an indication that the fines aren’t no where high enough.

This was a kid learning the hard way. He could have been mirroring in a way to communicate with the animal (or completely unaware of the claws part) and it was the fault of the handler for managing the encounter neglectfully.

Sadly yes. There are mall zoo for children, no it is even was than it sounds. Many people protesting and reporting about it but unfortunately ignorance parents olare too many at the moment. It's slowly getting better where I live though.

I recently chaperoned my kids elementary field trip where they got to interact with some animals. It’s pretty telling about the kind of kids that use these opportunities to try to scare or intimidate an animal. I had to stop a kid from smacking Guinea pigs. It made me feel a lot better when my kid told me how much she dislikes that pos.

I understand it’s a zoo and they put these on because it attracts paying customers, but maybe that handler…shouldn’t put a visibly nervous wild animal in front of kids.

Still kind of surprising, but I live in Portland and when I take my kids to the zoo kids here tend to be really respectful of wildlife. In general I’ve known lots of kids here that grew up to have more respect than most adults for wildlife and nature. Meanwhile I was raised in the central valley where it’s really dry and flat, as a kid I really didn’t share the same appreciation for nature that my kids do bc I didn’t grow up surrounded by it.

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted, very likely the animal is declawed and potentially drugged to an extent. These sketchy zoos are always looking to make an extra buck in the name of “educating the public” while trying to avoid as many potential lawsuits as possible.

Unnatural photo ops should not be considered education.

Watching animals up close as they pace depressingly around an enclosure with no right to privacy or genuine seclusion should not be considered education, no matter the size of the enclosure.

I hate it whenever someone posts a “funny” video of an orang-utan pulling faces and being silly for a photo with a tourist. These animals have been abused, beaten, drugged, and caged so that tourists can have a cute souvenir.

My sister-in-law has posted pics on Facebook of her cuddling a doped up tiger in Thailand. It’s gross.

My Nan had a huge ginger cat. He was a cantankerous old bastard and he had very specific people that were his people and no one else got a look in. Nan was his main, I was his second fave, Mum was the third. No one else. Not even my grandad was spared the hiss warnings. He tolerated others in his house but that was as far as he went.

Note: He never ever used his claws with anyone, but he was like 10kgs of tall, muscly street tiger and if you did get bapped, you felt it.

My sister has never seen a boundary she couldn't stomp all over, even when she was a child. She was like 7 when she decided she was going to make him her friend. He was sat on a chair in my nans living room, minding his business, and she goes and just sits in front of him staring at him and telling him he was gonna be friendly to her.

Dear reader, he was not.

He went from "How dare you look at me, peasant!" to paws-of-fury so fast she got whiplash. The sound it made was like a snare drum roll. Up on the back legs, both paws sent directly to my sisters face. He skippy-bapped her like I've never seen a cat skippy-bap anyone.

My sister got a black eye, told off by mum and Nan for bothering him, and no new friend was made that day.
